Basketball Play - Spurs Zipper Triple Flare

Spurs Zipper Triple Flare

Kevin Bruinsma 07/09/2013

In the Western Conference Finals the San Antonio Spurs ran the corner flare action a few times against the Memphis Grizzlies. I didn't see it much against the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Here they utlized a zipper screen to get the 3 man the ball at the top of the key allowing #9 Tony Parker to run off 3 screens. After 2 set his screen he sprints to the wing that Parker started in. With all of the focus on Parker the ball goes back to the wing. The big comes to ball screen, which is rejected as #20 Manu Ginobili drives baseline. #9 Tony Parker drifts to the corner, and #21 Tim Duncan has two options based on his positioning and his defender, duck in and look for the drop down pass or set flare screen for Parker. Basketball Play - Spurs Twins Set

Spurs Twins Set

Kevin Bruinsma 07/09/2013

This set led to a wide open #21 Tim Duncan 15 foot jump shot in the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. In a horns set they utilized a flex screen to get into the action. This forced Duncan's man to defend something else before he popped up to the FT line. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Stagger Screen

Spurs Stagger Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 07/08/2013

The San Antonio Spurs utilized a lot of movement and spacing to create open rolling lanes for #21 Tim Duncan. Here they look for the quick hoop as the 3 man curls off a stagger screen. After screening #21 Tim Duncan pops back to get a catch. He executes a dribble handoff and dives hard to the rim. The Miami Heat had a difficult time dealing with him rolling. See More

Spurs Stagger Ball Screen Under

#4 Danny Green did a great job of moving around on the perimeter to give the Miami Heat fits in the NBA Finals. In this specific set he went from one corner to the other as #9 Tony Parker was dribbling off the stagger screen. His man was so worried about the rolling bigs he didn't even know where Green went. Led to a wide open 3-pointer. See More

The Spurs ran this against the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals to create seperation on #21 Tim Duncan's side ball screen. #4 Danny Green while Duncan was trailing the play set his man up and set a screen for Duncan so he had a great screening angle on #9 Tony Parker. Everyone spaced the floor and Duncan & Parker played two man game. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs SLOB High Post Follow

Spurs SLOB High Post Follow

Kevin Bruinsma 07/05/2013

My favorite San Antonio Spurs SLOB and the one that the Miami Heat had the most difficulty defending in the NBA Finals. #9 Tony Parker did a great job of curling right around #21 Tim Duncan after passing him the ball for lay-ups. Duncan's defender was scared to help too much to give up an elbow jumper or drive, it led to two #9 Tony Parker lay-ups. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs SLOB Bearcat

Spurs SLOB Bearcat

A common San Antonio Spurs SLOB which didn't translate into many points against the Miami Heat. But the amount they ran it made me think they must have had good success with this action during the season. They utilized these back screens to get #21 Tim Duncan a post iso. The only hoop they got on this action against Miami was a #2 Kawhi Leonard 3 from the top of the key. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Misdirection

Spurs Misdirection

Kevin Bruinsma 07/04/2013

A very similiar set to what the Indiana Pacers ran against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals the Spurs ran a misdirection play against the Heat in the NBA Finals. Using the presence of #21 Tim Duncan they made it look like he was getting a cross screen, before #2 Kawhi Leonard turned right back around to set a stagger with #21 Tim Duncan for #20 Manu Ginobili. Spurs Side Ball Screen Under

An action being used a lot by NBA teams was utilized in the NBA Finals by both the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. Here in this diagram you can see that on the #9 Tony Parker and #21 Tim Duncan pick n' roll #4 Danny Green sprints from the weakside corner underneath the hoop to the strong side of the floor. His man was sinking in to help on the rolling post and lost track of his man. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Late Clock 3/4 Court

Spurs Late Clock 3/4 Court

Kevin Bruinsma 07/04/2013

Here is the set the San Antonio Spurs ran in Game 5 against the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Having only 5 seconds to go 3/4 court on the sideline the Spurs went with a small line up. They put #9 Tony Parker at midcourt, and had #14 Gary Neal run off him first, and then #20 Manu Ginobili. With him setting two screens he was able to pop back to the ball and have a full court iso. Basketball Play - Spurs Horns Stagger

Spurs Horns Stagger

Kevin Bruinsma 07/03/2013

The Spurs ran a nice variety of stuff out of the classic Horns set. They also loved to do things with a stagger action. Here they got their 2 the ball off a stagger and immediatly into a dribble handoff. This put the defense in a trailing position, and allowed the 5 to slip right to the rim for a basket against the Miami Heat. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Swing Ball Screen

Spurs Swing Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 07/02/2013

I really loved this action used by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. They look for the quick curl for the 2 man, get a shuffle screen, then a stagger, then a ball screen. This play is packed with multiple actions for the defense to guard and puts a lot of pressure on the man defending the 5 man. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Chest Triple

Spurs Chest Triple

Daniel Murphy 06/26/2013

The Spurs ran this set at the 7:23 mark of Q4 in their game 5 win over the Heat. This play starts off similarly to Tom Izzo's "Chest" play. Duncan cuts to the top of the key to give a 2-3 look at the start of the play. MSU will have the wings down screen the guards. Here the Spurs had Green set the first of 3 screens for Parker. When Parker catches the ball on the curl, Duncan turns to set a ball screen but Parker catches and drives for the floater. See More

Set run by the Spurs at the 9:22 mark of Q3 in their game 5 win over the Heat. The first frame is motion to get into the elbow set. The dribble hand off and roll by Duncan pulls the defense in to protect the rim allowing Green space for the open 3. See More
