Basketball Play - Wisconsin Stagger

Wisconsin Stagger

Andrew Greer 03/21/2015

Wisconsin used this set in the 1st half of their win over Coastal Carolina in Round 2 action. The Badgers ran this UCLA style offense multiple times throughout the night using different screens and 2 man game options. In this particular set the play is designed to get a shooter coming off of a stagger screen. Although the play was successful, the Badgers were unable to convert on the open jump shot. See More

Basketball Play - Drag

Drag

Andrew Lacey 04/21/2015

With the growing amount of teams using the ball screen in today's game; we decided to implement a couple simple quick ball screen actions that were not apart of our basic ball screen movements. The Ball screen is one of the toughest actions to guard in today's game. We have found it easy to get a get quality look in the lane off our ball screen sets. I discussed in my article published in the Winning Hoops Magazine (Sept./Oct. Edition) -"Using Ball Screens in your Motion Offense" that we generally use our ball screen actions after we get the defense moving. See More

Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors "Elbow Away"

Golden State Warriors "Elbow Away"

Gibson Pyper 06/01/2015

Steve Kerr has also used alot of action that the San Antonio Spurs have run with their Motion Strong/Weak and he runs nice options out of this for quick hitters. The first option is a rub screen for Draymond (look for them pointing or hitting their elbow's coming up the court to trigger this). They also run a quick pindown screen for Klay that they like to start each game with, as well as a lob set for Livingston. I think they will run the lob for Shaun Livingston as an entry or way to get him into the post, his matchup off the bench may be Matthew Dellevadova that he clearly will have a height advantage with. Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors "Wing Twist"

Golden State Warriors "Wing Twist"

Gibson Pyper 06/01/2015

This is great action that flows directly out of their early offense and 21 series, with options for both Klay and Steph. The ball is pushed early with a pass just like 21, but instead the player receiving the first pass reverses the ball to the trailing big at the top of the key. After this Steph and Klay play off each other screening for one another and reading the defense. Whichever guard pops to the wing comes off a dribble hand off from the big, the other comes off double screen on opposite side. Kerr runs a couple of wrinkles out of this action, having Klay being a screener in the double screen and peeling off for a shot and another nice Elevator counter out of it. See More

Basketball Play - Kansas Zone Lob

Kansas Zone Lob

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Kansas ran this play in the second half against New Mexico State. The play uses a dribble entry from Mason (1) from left to right. The dribble pushes Oubre (3) to the corner and sends Seldon (2) into the lane and back out to the perimeter. Mason passes to Seldon shifting the defense towards the ball. Oubre sneaks in behind the defense as 4 and 5 screen the bottom zone defenders. In the game, Seldon made the lob pass to Oubre with Oubre missing the dunk, but a good idea by Bill Self. See More

Basketball Play - Kentucky

Kentucky

Adam Spinella 03/07/2015

After examining two plays that Wooden runs to get layups or post touches, Wooden needed a way to attack teams that would sag into the lane and dare his team to shoot elbow jumpers. While Wooden didn't coach in an era of the three-point shot, the use of the outside or mid-range shot was crucial because it would open up the lane further. Wooden ran this play, called "Kentucky", to open up a shot on the wing for one of his guards coming off a double screen. See More

Basketball Play - Duke Thru DHO Shot

Duke Thru DHO Shot

Wes Kosel 04/02/2015

Duke used this play in the first half against Utah. The play starts with Cook dribbling towards the right wing pushing 2 towards the free-throw line. Cook's first look is inside to Okafor posting up. If he isnt' open, Cook looks at 4 popping out after the screen. 4 then dribbles left and gives the ball to Winslow on a dribble hand-off. Winslow stops behind the hand-off and takes the 3-point shot. Basketball Play - Indiana

Indiana

Adam Spinella 03/07/2015

Coach Wooden preached ball movement from side-to-side, making the defense move frequently and never letting the ball settle. With lots of quick passes in 10 to 15 foot gaps, Wooden was a master at designing plays that forced his teams to share the ball. As a counter, many defenses would start to jump passing lanes or make perimeter passing more difficult. When that would occur, Wooden would run "Indiana", a backdoor set that played through the high post. See More

Basketball Play - UTEP Double Post Offense

UTEP Double Post Offense

Wes Kosel 04/23/2015

Here are 4 options from UTEP's double post offense. In option 1, 1 passes to 3 on the wing then cuts into the lane. 4 sets a ball-screen on the wing and 2 screens down for 1. In option 2, 1 passes to 4 at the high post then moves into the lane to cut off of a down-screen from 2. If 1 doesn't have a shot, he looks for 5 on the cross-screen or to 3 on the down-screen. In option 3, 1 dribbles left pushing 3 across the floor. 5 slides to the corner around 4's screen for a shot. In option 4, 1 passes to 2 on the wing then cuts to the basket. 2 takes a double ball-screen from 4 and 5 while 1 cuts off of a cross-screen from 3. See More

Basketball Play - Pitch Up

Pitch Up

FastModel Sports 04/15/2015

1 pitches the ball up the court to the 2, only this time instead of shallow cutting he cuts diagonal on a straight line to the weak side block. As the ball is reverse from the 2 to the trailing 4 man the 3 pops out to receive the ball. Now instead of block-to-block action the 1 sets and Up screen for the 4 man who cuts hard to the strong side block. The first look is to the 4 and this is great action to get the 4 man into the post early and off of action that has great movement and is not stagnant. The better the screen set by the 1, the more his defender has to help and bump the cutting 4. This opens the 1 up at the top of the key for a pass from the 3. In the name of quick and consecutive action as the pass goes to the 1, the 5 sprints to set a Middle PNR for the 1. The 4 can replace up to the slot or space to the duck in area. See More

Basketball Play - ULL Horns Post Step Out

ULL Horns Post Step Out

Wes Kosel 04/19/2015

This play is simple yet effective. The point guard passes to 5 at the high post and cuts away as if he is going to move into the lane. Instead, 1 screens down for 4 who pops out to the top of the key for a 3-point shot. If the defense starts anticipating this action, look to send 1 off of a flare or to the basket on a slip. Basketball Play - Thunder Flex Stagger

Thunder Flex Stagger

Wes Kosel 04/20/2015

In this flex option, 2 cuts up towards the top of the key instead of into the lane on the cross screen. 5 moves down to set the staggered screen for 2 cutting up for a shot. 3 passes to 2 for a shot at the top of the key. If 2 doesn't have a shot, he passes to 1 then clears to the ball-side corner. 5 screens for 1 and 1 attacks into the lane. See More

Basketball Play - Heat Double Twist

Heat Double Twist

Brandon Mullis 06/30/2015

With the score tied at 94 and 1:05 remaining in Game 4 of the 2014 Eastern Conference Semi Finals, Miami Heat Head Coach Eric Spoelstra drew up this quick hitter to get his two best players in a pick and roll situation (James and Wade) with shooters spacing the floor. In this case, the Brooklyn Nets helped on LBJ's roll to protect the rim, which allowed James to kick out to Chalmers on the wing, who immediately found Chris Bosh in the corner for the open 3. The Heat would stay up for good in the game and take a 3-1 series lead over the Nets. See More

We are a base 4-out team and we use a lot of dribble drive action in our motion. Here is an easy way to create a driving angle and backdoor. We run this after we run our "Trigger" set that has multiple drives to the elbow. See More

Basketball Play - WVU Triple Screen BLOB

WVU Triple Screen BLOB

Andrew Greer 03/20/2015

West Virginia continued to stretch their 1st half lead out with the BLOB set making a wide open 3 from the ball side wing. I have seen this play used by multiple teams with various wrinkles. In this set the 3 seals or opens up to the rim. In most cases, one of the bigs 4/5 will dive toward the rim after the initial double screen. See More
