Basketball Play - Wedge Ballscreen

Wedge Ballscreen

Adam Spinella 02/25/2015

Increasingly at the collegiate and even high school levels, teams are running ball screen sets. As the postseason nears and high level teams remain, offenses must be prepared for all different styles of defensive play. Some nuanced defensive teams will throw a counter to good ball screen offenses – known as icing. Icing a ball screen occurs on side ball screens, where the man guarding the ball squares his shoulders to the sideline and does not let the ball go middle. The man guarding the screener does not hedge the screen, instead being ready to contain the ball as it gets driven towards the baseline. He contains, the original defender recovers and the man guarding the screener is in position to take away any rolls to the rim. The most obvious counter to icing a ball screen is hitting the pick-and-pop game, since coverage on the screener is non-existent at the moment the ball gets driven baseline. After that, teams adjust to set alley screens which lead the ball handler to the baseline. However, coaches of ball screen-heavy offenses may consider putting in a counter during the postseason. This play is one run by many NBA teams to stop a team from icing their ball screen. See More

Basketball Play - Fred Hoiberg Iowa State Set Play: 2-3 High Ball-Screen #2

Fred Hoiberg Iowa State Set Play: 2-3 High Ball-Screen #2

Scott Peterman 02/22/2015

Fred Hoiberg has turned Iowa State into a fast-paced offensive machine, akin to the Warriors in the NBA. The Iowa State Cyclones offense is predicated upon fast tempo, unselfish ball movement, three-point shooting, and positional versatility. PerNCAA.com, Hoiberg’s squad sits at 11th in the nation in scoring offense and 11th in field goal percentage. According to Ken Pomeroy, Iowa State plays at the 13th fastest pace in the country and ranks eighth in the nation in offensive efficiency. The efficiency stems from the infectious ball movement instilled by Hoiberg, reflected by the team’s second best assist per game average in the country. When the Cyclones click on all cylinders, they look like a team destined for a deep run in March. Basketball Play - Fred Hoiberg Set Play; 3 Guard Screen the Screener

Fred Hoiberg Set Play; 3 Guard Screen the Screener

Scott Peterman 02/21/2015

Iowa State Head Coach Fred Hoiberg likes to use plays that create multiple scoring options at the rim and from the 3-point range. This 3 Guard Screen the Screener play is exactly what I am talking about. Fred Hoiberg has always stressed proper spacing as a key component for offensive efficiency. Since he took over the reins of the Iowa State program in 2010-2011. ISU's offense have evolved around outstanding shooters who space the floor and make the extra pass to find the open man. Andrew Lacey 02/17/2015

Late game situations are becoming more important as the talent gap in all levels get closer. Here is a set that we used when I was at Pinecrest that allowed us to bring our shooter from the weak side to the strong side as the defense defended the drive. You can easily put your number 1 scoring option in the 3 spot as an adjustment. See More

Basketball Play - Motion Breakdowns - 1/0 With Chair

Motion Breakdowns - 1/0 With Chair

Randy Sherman 02/12/2015

Motion Breakdowns: To begin teaching the four basic cuts of motion offense (curl, back, out, straight) use a folding chair to simulate the screener setting a downscreen. Players on the wing have a ball, they pass to coach/Asst./Mgr./player who is centered. Stress setting up the cut by "walking the arc" then sprinting the cut. Miss the chair late! Call your cut! Teach the two inside cuts (curl, back) first. Work the drill on both sides or the floor. You can have four folding chairs and four lines on a single court with players rotating from line to line. Drill should be LOUD with players calling cuts! If you run motion, this is your most basic shooting drill. Do it daily. These are your game shots! See More

Basketball Play - Notre Dame Motion II

Notre Dame Motion II

Dana Beszczynski 01/31/2015

Mike Brey's Motion's Offense has multiple options depending on the cut and what's available with the read. Here against Duke, Notre Dame came down and ran a 2nd option whereby they incorporate the cross court pass into a sprint ball screen action with their 5 man Auguste - 30. Grant - 22 is so good at getting in the lane with his quickness and ball handling ability that the defense on Connaughton - 24 is forced to help opening up the lane for a baseline cut and lay-up. Mike Brey has really perfected the Irish's Motion set in the last years and his team is adept at executing it to perfection. See More

Basketball Play - Notre Dame Motion

Notre Dame Motion

Dana Beszczynski 01/31/2015

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame under Head Coach Mike Brey have been the surprise team of the year in the ACC. Brey's style is hard to copy as the Irish use multiple cuts and screening actions in their offense to score. In the game Wednesday night against Duke, this is the Opening Play they ran which really shows clearly how their movement opens up good spacing and the screening actions are so well timed to really force the defense into quick decision making. This was one of the most exciting games of the year and the Irish are moving towards a top seed in the NCAA Tournament come March. See More

Basketball Play - Detroit's Wing Iso

Detroit's Wing Iso

Kevin Bruinsma 01/28/2015

A play 100% designed to isolate your more athletic or stronger 4 man on the side of the floor. Detroit utilizes #2 Juwan Howard Jr. in multiple ways but he's at his best when he can play 1 on 1 basketball. Detroit isn't a team that runs a ton of offense but they push it hard in transition and attempt to create mis-matches thru blowing the ball up the floor. After transition their best offense is finding different ways to isolate players on the floor, in this case #2 Howard. He gets the switch in the ball screen and then all of the help on the back side is guards. With his strength & quickness he can power it up over smaller defenders. See More

Basketball Play - Continuous Shooting

Continuous Shooting

FastModel Sports 01/27/2015

This drill is all about getting shots up. Split your team into two groups at separate baskets, each side with four balls. Start with one line at the top of the key and another on the baseline. Each line has two balls. The player on the baseline starts by curling to the wing 10-15 feet from the basket. They receive a pass from the first player in the other line and proceed to take a jump shot and get their own rebound. Once a player makes the pass they curl to the wing for their own shot, receiving a pass from the next player in the opposite line. Each player gets their own rebound and returns to the opposite line from where they started. Each player gets two shots at each shooting position (left wing, top of the key, right wing) before the lines move to the next position. The drill is completed when the players shoot from each position (left wing, top of the key, right wing) two times. The teams at each basket are competing for the most makes…losing team runs.
