Basketball Play - 2 on 2 on Top

2 on 2 on Top

Randy Sherman 04/23/2015

Objective: Drill for jumping to the ball in deny stance Defending long fast basket cuts Denying out and forcing catches going away from the basket Make sure on the ball defenders follow "rooftop rules" with their stance and angle. Drill Advancements: When the ball is on the wing and the cutter is emptying, have wing player make a baseline drive so defender must sit on midline and help on drive (don't chase cutter without losing sight of the ball) Coach calls "Live!" at any time and the drill becomes 4v2 Live with the two defended players as the cutter and the undefended players as screeners. Basketball Play - Flip Saunders Horns Hand-Off Flex Action

Flip Saunders Horns Hand-Off Flex Action

Wes Kosel 07/24/2015

1 passes the ball into 5 at the high post. Once 5 gets it, he looks to hand the ball to 1 if he is open on the cut to the corner. If 1 doesn't get the ball, he screens for 3 in the corner. 3 curls the screen into the lane. If 3 isn't open, he screens for 2 as 4 screens for 3. At the same time, 5 give the ball to 1 on a dribble hand-off so that 1 can make the pass to 2 for a lay-up or to 3 for a shot. If 3 gets the ball without a shot, he can pass to 2 on the left wing cutting off of a screen from 5. See More

Basketball Play - Clippers Zipper L ATO

Clippers Zipper L ATO

Craig LeVasseur 04/29/2015

The Clippers used this ATO play in Game 5 against the Spurs, down 3 with 30 seconds left in the game. Chris Paul receives an L ballscreen from the Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, and the play is set up by Paul using the screen from Jordan. Jordan rolls hard off of the screen, and the spread alignment forces x4, Duncan, to bump the roll from Jordan and avoid the lob. Paul quickly throws back to Griffin, who swings and follows for a Side P/R with Jamal Crawford. There is no way Duncan can Show against the ballscreen after having to bump Jordan in the paint, and this forces a difficult rotation for the Spurs to contain the roll by Griffin. See More

Basketball Play - Spartan Zone Options

Spartan Zone Options

Wes Kosel 04/02/2015

Here are two zone options against a 2-3 zone from Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans. The play starts with a dribble entry to the right wing pushing 2 into the lane. 2 stops at the rim as 5 screens the middle defender in the zone. 2 then curls around the screen looking to get the ball in the middle of the zone. On the weak side, 4 screens for the low defender on the left side to free up 3 cutting up to the wing. Once 2 gets the ball, the bottom left zone defender has to make a decision on who to guard. If he guards 3 on the wing, 2 passes to 4 for lay-up (Option 1). If the defender takes 4 in the post, 2 passes to 3 for a shot (Option 2). See More

Basketball Play - Valpo Pick & Roll

Valpo Pick & Roll

Kevin Bruinsma 01/31/2015

In a marquee Horizon League match-up earlier in the year Valparaiso made the trip to face Oakland. Trailing with under two minutes left in the game Valpo turned to a pick & roll action with movement out of both corners to occupy the low man away who traditionally covers the rim. By rolling up #25 Peters on the ball side it forced the Oakland defender to follow up, making the back side defenders sink in the middle. The pin down screen and space kept those defenders in defending action as opposed to getting into gaps. All of the movement out of both corners confused Oakland and led to a huge basket for Valpo. Basketball Play - Elbow Punch

Elbow Punch

Kyle Gilreath 08/12/2013

During Game 4 of the 2008 NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics, Doc Rivers ran this quick post-up action out of an elbow set. The key to this is having 3 push their defender over top or at least get them between themself and the rim in order to button hook into a post and seal. See More

Basketball Play - 2 low

2 low

John Leonzo 07/11/2013

Here is a quick hitter that can be run effectively against man to man so long as the offense reads the defense correctly. The effectiveness of this play lies in the screen the screener action that occurs between 2 and 3. 2 will always curl this screen looking to score, if 3's defender helps on 2, 1 should look to hit 3 in the short corner for a shot oppertunity. Basketball Play - Spurs Twins Set

Spurs Twins Set

Kevin Bruinsma 07/09/2013

This set led to a wide open #21 Tim Duncan 15 foot jump shot in the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. In a horns set they utilized a flex screen to get into the action. This forced Duncan's man to defend something else before he popped up to the FT line. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Misdirection

Spurs Misdirection

Kevin Bruinsma 07/04/2013

A very similiar set to what the Indiana Pacers ran against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals the Spurs ran a misdirection play against the Heat in the NBA Finals. Using the presence of #21 Tim Duncan they made it look like he was getting a cross screen, before #2 Kawhi Leonard turned right back around to set a stagger with #21 Tim Duncan for #20 Manu Ginobili. Basketball Play - Iowa Horns Wheel

Iowa Horns Wheel

Andrew Greer 03/21/2015

Iowa used this set to get an open 3 in their Round 2 matchup with Davidson. The last action of the play netted Iowa a 3 from the top of the key. This horns action from the Hawkeyes is a 4 movement set with a ball screen, back screen, and two down screens for shooters. Iowa used this multiple times during the game hitting earlier options in the set. See More

Basketball Play - Elbow Through

Elbow Through

Stephen Gentry 09/07/2012

Here is a good set of what I call an "elbow" alignment. Plays out of this formation have become popular in recent years and you will see anyone from the Argentinian national team to the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics running sets out of it. "Elbow Through" is a good set to free up your PG for a driving lane off a dribble handoff as well as create a shot for your best shooter off a stagger. See More

Basketball Play - Atlanta Hawks "ATO Elevator"

Atlanta Hawks "ATO Elevator"

Gibson Pyper 05/07/2015

Coach Mike Budenholzer has a great playbook with a variety of plays for different situations. After a timeout in Game 1, he called a nice Elevator set for Kyle Korver, although it was covered well by the Wizards, they still got a decent look from the 3 point line. The set starts off in a Sideline out of Bounds situation and is triggered by the 4 man popping to the top of the key. The inbounder (point guard) sprints down toward the post, and v cuts back to the wing. Korver sets a cross screen for opposite wing and sprints through the elevator screen. See More

Basketball Play - Regis Rangers Continuity Ball-Screen Offense

Regis Rangers Continuity Ball-Screen Offense

Wes Kosel 07/27/2015

1 passes to 2 then cuts through the lane under the basket. Once 2 has the ball, 4 steps out and sets a ball-screen as 1 cuts to the opposite wing off of a screen from 3. 5 flashes to the top of the key and gets the pass from 2 if 2 can't create anything with the ball-screen. If 5 passes to 1, 3 cuts to the opposite wing off of 2's screen and 4 flashes high as 1 comes off of 5's ball-screen. Push Entry: This play can be started with a dribble push sending the wing to the opposite side of the floor. Hand-Off Entry: The point can also give the ball to 2 on a dribble hand-off to start the play. See More

Basketball Play - WSU Gut Action

WSU Gut Action

Kevin Bruinsma 02/19/2015

After we beat Wright State at their place this past Sunday they turned around and played Oakland at home on Wednesday. Their roster has been depleted due to injuries and it’s forced them to run different stuff offensively. Against us they ran a ton of movement based stuff where their wings curled off big screens and just played out of it. With Oakland coming up on our schedule, next week Wednesday I looked at that game to see how they attacked them with their limited line-up. Wright State has a freshmen #13 Benzinger that has really emerged during their latest stretch mainly because of how well he shoots the ball. Him and their post player #14 Karena are their two top players so putting them in action together makes it difficult to defend. You can see in the video those two essentially play a two man game in the middle of the floor. Wright State did a good job of moving the other players around on the floor so the help side defenders couldn’t get settled in and move into gaps. See More
