Basketball Play - Stationary Play Progression Drill

Stationary Play Progression Drill

Matt Hackenberg 04/28/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a drill to work on finishing at the rim. The drill is live but has guided defense. We love to use this drill in the progression seen in the diagrams, progressing from dry technique, then to guided play, and then into a small sided game. Basketball Play - Rim Runs Transition Drill

Rim Runs Transition Drill

Matt Hackenberg 04/21/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a break down drill for transition offense. This drill focuses on the habits of a 4 Out break, with a rim runner and point guard-led sideline break. This wasn't the primary transition offense drill we used when we ran this fast break system, but we mixed it in every once and a while. Matt Hackenberg 04/20/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a breakdown drill for post players. This drill lets players develop chemistry with one another in the middle third of the court. "2v2 High/Low" can be approached from the offensive side of the ball as well as the defensive side. Basketball Play - 1 on 1 Guard Drill

1 on 1 Guard Drill

Matt Hackenberg 04/13/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look one of my favorite defensive drills. I don't see this concept being taught much. The drill is to teach defenders to stay between the ball and the rim in high conflict situations, and force the offense take the toughest shot possible without fouling. Your players can get very good at this skill if it is emphasized enough. Matt Hackenberg 04/04/2022

These pivots are simple and effective once mastered. Basketball Play - Full Court Lay Ups Drill

Full Court Lay Ups Drill

Matt Hackenberg 03/31/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a warmup drill that works on dribble moves and outlet passes. We primarily used the drill to work on outlet passes, as we wanted all players to be able to rebound the ball and advance it up the sideline on a longer pass in our transition offense attack. Basketball Play - Diamond Scoring Drill

Diamond Scoring Drill

Matt Hackenberg 03/17/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at drill for guards and wings to work on their scoring moves. The simple diamond formation of the cones allows the players to work on an attack move, a counter move, and a finishing move. The coach defines the sequence, and the players execute as efficiently as possible, or you can let the players freestyle their owns sequences. Basketball Play - Post Development: "Burger Drill"

Post Development: "Burger Drill"

Matt Hackenberg 03/10/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a drill for post players. This drill is specifically for helping with balance around the basket. The video exaplins the drill in more detail, but I liked this drill as a non-contact skill development drill for bigs. Basketball Play - Stride Out Lay Ups Drill

Stride Out Lay Ups Drill

Matt Hackenberg 02/16/2022

In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a drill to work on getting your players to take longer strides while playing basketball. I believe longer strides allow players to be faster and cover more ground. I think drills like this help unlock a player's athleticism. Check out Euro Stride Finishing Drill as a complement to this one. Basketball Play - The Post Pit Drill

The Post Pit Drill

Matt Hackenberg 01/13/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a post play drill. This drill really works on sealing for position inside before catching the ball, and then provides some repetitions finishing inside against live defense. The drill can become a nice conditioning drill if a player is to get stuck in the pit for a while. Basketball Play - Drill: Interior Touch Series

Drill: Interior Touch Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we go through a series of drills we used with our post players during our guard/post breakdown portion of practice. We believed that using these basic drills on a regular basis would improve the footwork and touch of our interior players. We used medicine balls instead of basketballs while we filmed this, but that was not a regular occurrence. Basketball Play - Warrior Rebounding Drill

Warrior Rebounding Drill

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we get a drill we used during our positional breakdown portion of practice for our post players. It teaches rebounding, offense and defense in some capacity, and challenges player’s endurance. I really like how it teaches players how to create shots inside with limited space.
