Basketball Play - Spurs - "Triangle STS Hammer"

Spurs - "Triangle STS Hammer"

Doug Brotherton 05/04/2017

In Game 2 of the Spurs-Rockets series, in the 2017 NBA Playoffs, Popovich ran this ATO set. It is a terrific design, based on the fact that the Spurs love to isolate Kawhi Leonard (3). On the screen-the-screener action, it looks like an isolation, but is actually a "Hammer Action." This is a screen, to set up the baseline drift pass. It resulted in a wide open 3 for Danny Green, as the Spurs opened up a 10-point halftime lead in Game 2. Look for more isolation sets, and "Hammer Actions" from the Spurs, throughout the Playoffs. Basketball Play - Spurs - "Fake Hammer Snap" (SLOB)

Spurs - "Fake Hammer Snap" (SLOB)

Doug Brotherton 04/23/2017

The Spurs trailed the Grizzlies by 3, with 22 seconds left, and had the ball on the sideline. Popovich and the Spurs are known for their "Hammer Action," which is a baseline drift play. After a zipper screen to get the ball inbounds, the Spurs designed a "Hammer Action." Behind Kawhi Leonard's drive, they set a down screen for Patty Mills. The misdirection put the Grizzlies into a defensive scramble. On the pass to Mills, Kawhi's defender left to help. Kawhi spaced to the corner, where Mills made the extra pass. This resulted in a wide open 3 for Kawhi Leonard, which tied the game. In the tough scenario of needing a 3, late in the game, the Spurs got the rare uncontested look. A great design, with tremendous execution. Despite Marc Gasol's game winning shot, handing the Spurs a loss, this was the obvious "Xs and Os Play of the Game!" See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Floppy 4-Out

Spurs Floppy 4-Out

Adam Spinella 04/16/2017

A counter to the normal Floppy set, this is an action Gregg Popovich and the Spurs run out of timeouts to get LaMarcus Aldridge an open mid-range jumper. Since his defender is not used to guarding shooters and getting through screens, it is a particularly effective action. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Weave

Spurs Weave

Adam Spinella 04/16/2017

Gregg Popovich dribble weave set. While it can change based on personnel and spots, the objective is to get an action similar to their Motion Weak offense out of a dribble handoff set. They push one player backdoor and raise another, hoping their defenders run into each other. There is also an easy counter to cut backdoor if the defense snuffs it out and denies the pass. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Elbow Open

Spurs Elbow Open

Adam Spinella 04/16/2017

The San Antonio Spurs have some great passing big men this season -- David Lee, Pau Gasol. Popovich gets the ball into their hands at the free throw line and lets cutters and screeners move around them. Screening and cutting is dependent on personnel and what spot they are in -- usually they are trying to get the ball to Kawhi Leonard. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs 31 Hawk

Spurs 31 Hawk

Adam Spinella 04/16/2017

A staple of the Popovich playbook, the Hawk action is code for a side ballscreen occuring at the same time as a double stagger on the opposite side. It's a ballscreen that occupies help. In recent years the Spurs have run it with Kawhi Leonard as the ball screener, hoping he can pick-and-pop and isolate off of it. See More

Basketball Play - San Antonio Spurs - "Elbow 1"

San Antonio Spurs - "Elbow 1"

Doug Brotherton 03/28/2017

The San Antonio Spurs beat the defending NBA Champion, Cleveland Cavaliers, by 29 points. There was a lot working. This set was my favorite, as it has multiple scoring options. The Spurs stack two players weakside, to make it look like Kawhi Leonard (3) will come off of a weakside down screen. Instead, he sets a baseline cross screen, in a great screen-the-screener action.
