Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day May 30: Memphis Grizzlies Horns DHO

NBA Play of the Day May 30: Memphis Grizzlies Horns DHO

Daniel Murphy 05/30/2013

Memphis ran this play at the 2:25 mark of the first quarter in their 93-104 OT loss in game three to the Spurs. After the reject of the ball screen, 1 dragged 5's defender out so 5 was wide open at the nail (midlle of the free throw line). Instead of giving Gasol the wide open free throw line jumper, Pondexters man rotated from the weakside corner to guard Gasol. Gasol reversed the ball to the corner for the wide open three point shot. Basketball Play - Zipper 3

Zipper 3

John Leonzo 05/29/2013

Here is a zipper set that is run to get the ball in the hands of your best decision maker (1 in this play) and gives you plenty of scoring oppertunities. The spurs run a variation of this play with much success by putting Parker at the 1. Ginobli at the 2 (who can get a 3 on the extra pass from 3) and Danny Green at the 3. The skills of these players puts a lot of stress on the defense and makes this quick hitter hard to guard. See More

Basketball Play - Spur

Spur

John Leonzo 05/15/2013

Here is a set play that was run numerous times in the Spurs second game vs. the Golden State Warriors last night. This play starts out of a 3-out 2-in set and quickly develops into a set that gives you a screen and roll option on the strong side and a stagger screen on the weak side. This play is effective because the strong side ball screen forces the defenders of 5 or 3 on the weak side to be in help and will allow either 5 or 3 to slip to the basket after setting their screen. Basketball Play - Quick Loop

Quick Loop

Kyle Gilreath 05/15/2013

This is another flex-ish set that the Golden State Warriors ran last night versus the Spurs. Rather than running the traditional flex, the Warriors spread out the floor and went into a quick 3-man game to get Stephen Curry a quick 3-pointer from a hand-off late in the 3rd quarter. See More

Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Nigh May 15: Golden State Warriors Elbow Flex

NBA Play of the Nigh May 15: Golden State Warriors Elbow Flex

Kyle Gilreath 05/15/2013

I am sure I have posted this play in the past but it is one of my favorites so I wanted to post it again! The Golden State Warriors went to this action in the 1st Half of Game 4 versus the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. This elbow set into a flex action is very popular in the NBA; Stan Van Gundy ran it religiously in Orlando. While us coaches are all very familiar with the Flex, I have learned recently that many young players today are not familiar with how to run the play NOR guard it. In my opinion, if you have two great scorers on the floor, this is a very difficult action to guard. The defense has to respect the flex cut give up a lay-up. Then by pinning down on the screener, the defense must make a decision how to guard and if they over-react the big will be open slipping to the rim. See More

Basketball Play - Zipper Special

Zipper Special

John Leonzo 05/04/2013

Here is a set that is run often by the San Antonio Spurs. This play is great to because it gives Tony Parker the opportunity to create off a ball screen, an option for DeJuan Blair rolling into the post, and an option for a 3 pointer from Danny Green while his man is giving help on either the roll or the post flash. Basketball Play - Hook Out

Hook Out

Kyle Gilreath 04/25/2013

The San Antonio Spurs ran this middle pick & roll play Wednesday night versus the LA Lakers in their Game 2 victory of the NBA Playoffs. The Lakers' effort to prevent a lay-up by Parker resulted in a kick out catch & shoot 3-pointer from Matt Bonner. See More

Basketball Play - Elbow Flex Special

Elbow Flex Special

Kyle Gilreath 04/22/2013

Sunday afternoon in their game versus the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Playoffs, the LA Lakers ran this Elbow Flex action to get a dunk for Dwight Howard. This elbow set-up into a flex action is very common in the NBA. However, I have rarely (if never) seen the 1 set the backscreen instead of coming off the pin down for a shot or dribble hand-off. Basketball Play - Transition Set

Transition Set

Daniel Murphy 04/22/2013

This early offense set was run by the San Antonio Spurs in the second quarter of their game against the Golden State warrios 4/15/2013. It starts with a post look for the first big down the court in transition. Is followed by a baseline cut from the guard who makes the entry pass to the post and finishes with a cut to the basket for a layup by a guard off of a screen from the trailing big. See More

Basketball Play - Hawk Go

Hawk Go

Kyle Gilreath 03/07/2013

Thursday evening on ESPN the Chicago Bulls ran this common NBA set. Versus a smart defensive team like the Spurs, you have to start pick & roll actions by freeing up the ball handlers with screening actions. By have 5 (Boozer) come off a Hawk cut to the rim, the Spurs were forced to respect him in the post and him give a second of help to prevent a post lay-up. This was just enough time to free up the 2 for a catch and then pick & pop with 4. See More

Basketball Play - San Antonio's 15 SNUG

San Antonio's 15 SNUG

Mark Travis 02/07/2013

This is a play that the Spurs love to run that features a "snug" pick-and-roll between Tony Parker and Tiago Splitter. The pick-and-roll action between these two is deadly - Splitter is one of the best roll men in the league - but just in case the defense can bottle it up (which is rare), the Spurs have some sweet weakside action that can punish the defense even if they do everything right. Video of this play. See More
