Basketball Play - Cutters High-Low

Cutters High-Low

Dana Beszczynski 02/05/2014

The Demon Deacons have already knocked off UNC this year and were looking to take down the mighty Orangemen last night at the Joel, but it wasn't meant to be. Wake Forest has a really good Continuity Offense they used with some effect in the 1st half to seize control of the high post area against the vaulted 2-3 Zone of Jim Boeheim. This play really does a good job of working under the zone as well and with the continuous high post action, many open shots can be found with a good passing big man. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Exchange Up

Rhody Exchange Up

Kyle Gilreath 01/10/2014

The last Rhody play for this weak creates more movement amongst the bigs and results in a middle pick & roll. As 4 uses the screen from 5, 1 should look at 4 for a second as he could be open. However, that is a tough passing angle so more than likely 1 will keep it. (If you want to feed 4, 1 should quickly advance to 3 for a wing post feed). By having 5 set a screen for a player to the rim the goal is to get X5 to help momentarily and cause him to be late on the pick & roll. As a result, you will have three options of a attack: 1. 1 attacking the rim 2. 1 throwing back to 5 at the free-throw line for a jumper 3. X2 helps on penetration and kick to 2 for a shot See More

Basketball Play - 3 Shots at 3 Spots

3 Shots at 3 Spots

Kyle Gilreath 12/30/2013

This past week while in Louisville for the King of the Bluegrass we were fortunate to watch NCAA Division 2 powerhouse Bellarmine University practice before taking off a few days for Christmas. Their practice was very impressive. The amount of energy and communication throughout the entire practice is exactly what our team needed to witness. This shooting drill is one they opened up practice with and allowed to get up a ton of shots in a short amount of period. The drill incorporates the 3 main spots on the floor (top of key and each corner) and 3 different shots at each spot. The line under the rim passes to the "spot" and then closes out to the ball, the player receives the pass and shot fakes before making a 1 or 2 dribble attack before passing to the 3rd spot. After passing (or shooting) follow your pass (shot) to the next line so each player performs each shot type at all 3 spots. I believe the goal of the drill was to score somewhere around 155 points; 3pt=3, 15 ft=2, lay-ups=1. Below are the shots that each player must perform at each spot: Corner 1 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Top of the Key 3 pointer Catch & rip step-back 15 footer Catch & rip finish at the rim with a power lay-up / up and under Corner 2 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Special thank you to Scott Davenport for allowing us to watch his practice. Basketball Play - SLOB with Backdoor

SLOB with Backdoor

Basketball HQ 10/29/2013

This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. This play is best for teams with a passing big. You are running this play for your best shooter or scorer. Your 2 guard will have to really sell that he is going to receive a hand off from 4 and then cut hard backdoor. He will need to read 3's man helping and then he can pass to him for three point shot. Basketball Play - Post Entry with Interchange Screen

Post Entry with Interchange Screen

Basketball HQ 10/26/2013

This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. This play is best for teams with a passing big. Your point guard will have to be able to make shots coming off screens in order for this play to work properly. One of the keys for this play is as soon as the ball goes into the post, your 4 & 3 lift so they are in position to receive a pass if their man doubles the post. See More

Basketball Play - High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off / Backdoor

High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off / Backdoor

Basketball HQ 10/16/2013

This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. This play is best for teams with a passing big. You are running this play for your best shooter or scorer and your point guard. You will need to drill with your players on how to come off a hand off, and how to have your bigs read the defense to make the fake hand off. This is a great action for teams with a point guard that will be over played on the hand off. See More

Basketball Play - 3-3 Conversion

3-3 Conversion

Daniel Murphy 09/30/2013

Drill stolen from Coach Bob Hurley of St. Anthony H.S. He in turn got it from Dick Harter. As a rule the player who defensive rebounds or takes the ball out of bounds after a score is on offense and the old offense always converts to defense. This is similar to 11 man break or other 3-3 drills where the defense comes in from the sideline, but in my opinion is a little more practical because the defense had to convert from offense and is in a more realistic game scenario. Many successful coaches believe transition defense is one of the top 3 skills a team must have. As such, defensive transition should be drilled daily. A note about drills-make sure to teach the skills you want. Stopping the ball, protecting the basket, communicating, screening, passing, cuttining etc. You can play this drill for a set amount of time ie. 8 minutes and keep score. Depending on what you as a coach want to emphasize, points can be given or taken for offensive rebounds, turnovers etc. Because it is 3-3 conversion, a short clock can be used to promote an aggressive offensive attack. Basketball Play - Spurs SLOB High Post Follow

Spurs SLOB High Post Follow

Kevin Bruinsma 07/05/2013

My favorite San Antonio Spurs SLOB and the one that the Miami Heat had the most difficulty defending in the NBA Finals. #9 Tony Parker did a great job of curling right around #21 Tim Duncan after passing him the ball for lay-ups. Duncan's defender was scared to help too much to give up an elbow jumper or drive, it led to two #9 Tony Parker lay-ups. See More

Basketball Play - 5 on 4 Rotation Shell

5 on 4 Rotation Shell

Kyle Gilreath 05/31/2013

This is a drill that I love to run throughout the season to help enforce my defensive philosophy when it comes to helping on baseline penetration. My defensive philosophy is to keep the ball out of the middle of the floor. WIth that said, when the ball is in the corner I teach my players to direct the ball handler to the baseline halfway in between the 3-point line and lane line. Furthermore, the help needs to come early enough outside the lane and cut off the basket and the baseline. This is a 5 out drill because that is the style of offense we currently run. If you are guarding a team in the post, I NEVER help off the post because it opens up easy lay-ups. That is why is it vital for your help defenders to be aware and in the correct positions early. This is also a great drill that teaches your players how to scramble in defensive situations after cutting off the baseline. Make sure the coach passes to different players througout the drill to enforce the level of urgency and communication in such scrambles. Have your players move the ball around the perimeter and run the offense several times through before passing to the coach. See More

Basketball Play - Hand Off with High Pick & Roll

Hand Off with High Pick & Roll

Basketball HQ 03/25/2013

With this play have your 5 man set the ball screen and you best shooting/passing big do the replacing. As your 5 rolls and your 4 replaces the 4's defender may stay in help defense allowing an open shot for him. Work with your bigs on walking their defender down after setting the ball screen and sealing as the pass is going to 4. This play is from the 2012-2013 Wisconsin Green Bay season. See More
