Basketball Play - Loyola- Chicago - One More Pass Situations

Loyola- Chicago - One More Pass Situations

Matt Wheeler 03/31/2018

The Ramblers have great ball movement within their set offense but they also excel in their passing when the plays break down. They do an excellent job of attacking the paint and drawing a second defender to them. When they pass it out they create a "One More" pass situation. In these situations the offensive player receiving the first pass usually has a chance to score but by making an immediate extra pass they get their teammate an even better scoring opportunity. This creates longer more difficult closeouts for the defense that the offense can create out of. See More

Basketball Play - Loyola-Chicago - Doubling the Post

Loyola-Chicago - Doubling the Post

Matt Wheeler 03/31/2018

Loyola-Chicago doesn't have great size in the post especially when their starting 6'9" center Cameron Krutwig goes to the bench. So they will double team when teams try to post them up. They will usually bring the extra defender from one of three areas: from the top, from the baseline and from the closest perimeter player. Skilled teams can make you pay for putting an extra player on the ball. Passing it out of the double team will put the defense in outnumbered situations. The Ramblers excel in rotating out of these situations to get matched up before the offense can make them pay. See More

Basketball Play - Miami Hurricanes - ATO Backdoor

Miami Hurricanes - ATO Backdoor

Matt Wheeler 03/15/2018

The Miami Hurricanes were able to get a backdoor layup out of a timeout with this play in their first round NCAA Tournament game against Loyola-Chicago. After passing to 4, 1 followed the pass looking for a handoff. 5 then set a flare screen for 2. This occupied the help defense on the right side of the floor, and isolated 3 against his defender. As 4 dribbled at him, 3 faked toward the ball then made a hard cut backdoor for a layup. See More

Basketball Play - UCLA Bruins - Baseline Runner (Zone)

UCLA Bruins - Baseline Runner (Zone)

Matt Wheeler 03/14/2018

UCLA ran this concept-based zone offense in their First Four matchup against St. Bonaventure, putting their best player (1) on the baseline and giving him different options to cut behind the zone. When the ball gets to a side one of the post players cuts to the high post and the other one stays low. This overloads the offense, putting 4 offensive players against 3 defensive players in the zone. When the ball is reversed up top, 1 has options to run the baseline or flash to the high post. If 1 receives the ball in the high post, 4 and 5 seal their defenders looking for a pass to the rim. 2 and 3 flatten out to the wings to create a better passing angle for a kickout three point shot. Tony Miller 12/10/2017

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets - Rub Stagger PNR

Houston Rockets - Rub Stagger PNR

Matt Wheeler 10/18/2017

The Houston Rockets opened the 2017-18 season with this play designed to get James Harden (2) a drive to the basket off a staggered ball screen. After passing to 2, 1 followed his pass and abruptly stopped his cut next to x1. By quickly changing the the cut into a ball screen x1 wasn't able to provide help. This allowed 2 to turn the corner knowing that x2 was out of the play and be able to attack x5 going to the basket. See More

Basketball Play - 2-guard Box

2-guard Box

Rory Hamilton 08/01/2017

Box is our 3/4 court press break vs. any odd front zone press. We always want to have a sideline, middle and reversal option. Even though our box is a little distorted, we always have a sideline, middle, reversal and throw over option. If we cannot pass to our sideline or middle player we reverse the ball and our middle player flashes sideline and our sideline player flashes middle. Players can utilize the dribble to improve spacing and passing angles anytime vs. the zone press. On any pass to the middle, the guard immediately looks to attack and create an advantage. See More

Basketball Play - Touchdown

Touchdown

Rory Hamilton 08/01/2017

This play can be run after a made FT or after your opponent scores and calls a timeout. It utilizes the same alignment as our normal press break so it is hard to scout. It begins with our point guard running the baseline and our 5 man flashing hard to the ball. The 2 man pops out-of-bounds and receives the pass from the point guard. Once the 2 catches the ball the 3 man flashes hard to the elbow and then to the corner to draw the defense. The 4 flashes to weak side elbow and demands the ball. After passing the ball to the 2 man the point guard takes off deep and utilizes the 4 man's screen to get open. See More

Basketball Play - Buddy

Buddy

Rory Hamilton 08/01/2017

Regular Press Break Set-up except point guard takes the ball out of bounds: 3 will diagonal screen for 2 man and 2 man has the option of going high or low off the screen. The 3 will always break opposite the 2 man. After passing to either the 2 or 3, the point guard immediately cuts hard down the middle of the floor for a quick return pass. This is effective against teams that trap the first pass in either man or zone. If the point guard is not open on the cut, then the ball is reversed through the 3 man and then to the post player 5 flashing sideline. When the 5 man catches his reads are sideline, middle, or reverse it again. The 4 flashes middle, the point guard flashes sideline and the 2 player sprints wide and becomes throw over option. If the ball is passed middle, the receiver immediately looks to pass it opposite for a potential (2 vs. 1) against the defense. See More

Basketball Play - Buddy "Go"

Buddy "Go"

Rory Hamilton 08/01/2017

Normal Press Break Alignment with point guard taking ball out-of-bounds and other guards 2 & 3 at the elbows. The post players 4 and 5 are at half court. Buddy GO looks to hit 2 man popping out FT line extended. After passing to either the 2, the point guard immediately cuts hard down the middle of the floor for a quick return pass. This is effective against teams that trap the first pass in either man or zone. If the 2 man cannot get the ball to the point guard in the middle of the floor, then she reverses the ball back to the safety. The safety looks middle and passes if open, otherwise continues to reverse the ball to the 5 player flashing sideline. On ball reversal we have the same press offense slides as 4-up: Middle goes sideline and sideline flashes middle and the 2 man becomes long diagonal option. See More

Basketball Play - South Korea (W) - UCLA Rip

South Korea (W) - UCLA Rip

Ryan Nguyen 07/28/2017

UCLA Offense from South Korea that they've been running at FIBA Asia Cup Women 2017. Rather than passing the ball to 3 on the wing to initiate the UCLA entry, 4 sets a ball-screen for 1. As 1 comes off the screen, 3 loops to the basket and pops for a catch from 1. On 4's catch, 5 sets a weak-side flare screen for 2. 5 then pops out for a catch from 4. 3 sets a rip screen for 4. 5 looks to lob to 4 cutting to the basket. See More

Basketball Play - Australia (W) - Horns Flare Wide

Australia (W) - Horns Flare Wide

Ryan Nguyen 07/27/2017

A wrinkle off of "Horns Flare" that Australia runs at FIBA Asia Cup Women 2017. If 4 isn't open for a shot coming off of the flare screen, 4 screens down for 3. 5 fakes a ball-screen for 1 then goes to screen down for 2. 3 curls to the basket and 4 pops out behind the 3-point line after screen. 1 has option of passing to 2, 3 or 4 for shots.
