Basketball Play - Louisville Pick N' Pop Counter

Louisville Pick N' Pop Counter

Kevin Bruinsma 05/29/2013

The 2013 NCAA National Champion Louisville Cardinals ran this play a ton throughout their NCAA Tournament run. They utilized #10 Gorgui Dieng's ability to be mobile and make open mid-range jumpers in every single round in the NCAA Tournament. After running a ball screen at the top of the key and throwing the ball back to the 4 man. #3 Peyton Siva would come down in the middle of the lane and set the down screen for #10 Dieng. As this was happening #11 Luke Hancock the Louisville 3 man would move into position to set a baseline screen for #10 Dieng. He now had the option based on the opponent's defense to come off the Gut screen from #3 Siva or the baseline screen set by #11 Hancock. In most cases he came off the gut screen and hit an elbow jumper. See More

I figured with so many people doing one set and one drawing, I wanted to offer something different. After reviewing all four games of the Western Conference Finals between the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs I looked at actions that were successful and one's that didn't have quite as much success. I started with the Memphis Grizzlies. The play diagrams below are drawn for multiple plays with the play name titled directly on top of the court frame. These play diagrams are in order with the video you can find here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hYblZmLbIM&feature=youtu.be This way you can view the video and look at the play diagrams while the video is running. This is the opening tip play that Team USA ran against Team World in the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit which took place at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. Basketball Play - Over/Under Entry

Over/Under Entry

Kevin Bruinsma 06/03/2013

This play set comes from the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit between Team USA and Team World which took place at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. The World team ran this set a few times getting baskets multiple times. It allows your play makers (In their case the wings) the ability to read the defense, run off a screen in whichever direction they chose and then have a chance to attack the basket with their defender trailing them. If the defender catches up, then you have a side ball screen option. A very simple & easy set that Team World ran very well. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer 1-4 High Set

Pacer 1-4 High Set

Kevin Bruinsma 06/14/2013

This is a set the Indiana Pacers ran against the Miami Heat in the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals. Looking to get their marquee player, Paul George a isolated post/wing catch the Pacers sent #24 George to the opposite side of the court before coming back hard to the ball on the reversal for deep post position. If #24 George couldn't catch the ball deep he moved out to the mid-wing area for a catch. This is where Indiana ran a great alternative action to get an even deeper post touch. #50 Tyler Hansbrough after entering the ball to George comes down the lane and sets a screen for #55 Roy Hibbert right in the middle of the lane, who now gets a deep post catch right in the middle of the paint. Basketball Play - Pacer Deny Action

Pacer Deny Action

Kevin Bruinsma 06/14/2013

A common screen the screener set ran by a lot of High School, College, and NBA teams was used by the Indiana Pacers against the Miami Heat. As you will see in most of Indiana's play sets they run a lot of stuff for their 3 man, #24 Paul George. Here they use George to set the back screen for the post before he runs off 5's screen for a wing catch. He has the option to shoot, drive, or dump it inside to the posting #55 Roy Hibbert. See More

This BLOB ran by the Indiana Pacers vs the Miami Heat was run to get two possible results: 1.) #24 Paul George mid-range jumper running off the stagger screens. 2.) #21 David West isolation from the elbow or in. Indiana got it to West in one of his favorite scoring spots, close to the basket so he could operate. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer Iverson Curl

Pacer Iverson Curl

Kevin Bruinsma 06/16/2013

With so much attention being placed on #24 Paul George the Indiana Pacers used him in every set they ran as either the main option or a decoy. Here he starts by running an iverson action across the floor to get the defense focused on him. #21 David West flashes up to the elbow for his catch. On his catch #24 George runs right around him to the basket. West has a simple read throw it to George or if his man backs off to protect the pass, shoot the ball. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer Iverson Empty Side Ball Screen

Pacer Iverson Empty Side Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 06/17/2013

The Indiana Pacers loved to run #24 Paul George off the Iverson Action or Zipper screens to get him open. Here after running off #21 David West's Iverson screen, he gets a ball screen from him. The key to this action is everyone clearing out on the ball screen as the 5 ducks in to the middle of the paint. With #21 West's shooting ability and #24 George's ability to create, score, and make plays more often then not the opponents in this case the Miami Heat will switch the bigs sending the 5 man's defender out to defend the popping 4 man. This leaves the 5 man with a guard dropping down on him. #55 Roy Hibbert did an unbelievable job of getting to the lane and sealing a smaller 2 man here. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer Late Clock SLOB

Pacer Late Clock SLOB

Kevin Bruinsma 06/18/2013

Although this set didn't result in a basket or even free throws it forced a great defensive effort from the Miami Heat to stop the Pacers from scoring. This action puts a lot of pressure on the defense as they have to guard a mis direction cut by the 2, then the stagger iverson action for #24 Paul George who everyone thinks the play is going to, a flare screen for #21 David West, and then finally a slip/dive to the rim by #55 Roy Hibbert. This set had some fantastic actions. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer Misdirection

Pacer Misdirection

Kevin Bruinsma 06/18/2013

The Indiana Pacers ran this set a few times in the ECF against the Miami Heat. They utilized mis-direction against an aggressive Heat defense to keep Miami on their toes. Following the UCLA screen and flex screen the 1 man then turns right back around to get the 3, letting #24 Paul George run off a stagger screen. This brought the 1 off a down screen and gave him the ball back in a better scoring area for him to create. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer Weave Duck In

Pacer Weave Duck In

Kevin Bruinsma 06/19/2013

The Pacers ran this set in a late clock situation right before the end of the First Half in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals vs the Miami Heat. #21 David West with a textbook example of ducking in, sealing a defender. This play didn't result in a basket as West missed an open lay-up. But the job he does of going along the baseline, then coming back towards the rim sealing they switching defender was tremendous.
