Basketball Play - Quick Hitter Lob vs 2-3 Zone

Quick Hitter Lob vs 2-3 Zone

John Zall 06/14/2016

The University of Virginia ran this to get a lob dunk versus a zone defense. The 2 slice cut through the lane and got the pass from 1 who quickly continued to reverse the ball to 3 on the left wing. The 3 then reverses course with the ball ultimately sending it back to the 1. The 4 and 5 on the baseline interchanged and set back screens on the bottom of the zone. The exchange made it tough for the zone to realize they were being screened and fight through. The 1 threw the ball up to 3 at the rim for the lob over the zone. See More

Basketball Play - Washington Wizards "Special"

Washington Wizards "Special"

Brandon Mullis 09/03/2015

The Washington Wizards were tied with the Orlando Magic with 0.8 seconds remaining last December. After calling a timeout, Coach Randy Wittman drew up this SLOB set designed to get one of his better shooters (not named Bradley Beal) coming off a quick screen and then slice to the corner to clear out the help and the lane area to open up the rim. Beal, the athlete/dunker in this set, simultaneously comes off a screen from a big and then rolls back to the rim for the game winning lob lay in. See More

Basketball Play - L.A. Clippers 4 Snap

L.A. Clippers 4 Snap

Craig LeVasseur 04/16/2015

While the Celtics best utilized the Slice series with KG as the trail big, the Clippers prefer to have Blake Griffin start on the block. The Clippers used this setup to get Blake catches at his left block sweet spot. If the post up is not there, the 2 and 3 can play out 2nd side action for additional options. See More

Basketball Play - L.A. Clippers 4 Pop

L.A. Clippers 4 Pop

Craig LeVasseur 04/16/2015

Another set out of the Mike D’Antoni playbook, 4 Pop is designed for a shooting 4. While Blake Griffin has improved his midrange jumper each year, the main advantage of this set is putting Blake 1 on 1 against his usually slower defender at the top of the key. His driving ability makes this play an ideal Slice counter for the Clippers, and an option that the Celtics likely would not have been able to utilize with KG. A clear side P/R with Blake and CP3 is also a great 2nd option to have. See More

Basketball Play - L.A. Clippers 1 Pop

L.A. Clippers 1 Pop

Craig LeVasseur 04/16/2015

This play comes straight from the Mike D’Antoni playbook, and sets up exactly like the basic Slice action that Doc Rivers used in Boston. While the option is there to bring any great post up player to the block, as D’Antoni often did with Carmelo Anthony in New York, this is really just a Spread High P/R in disguise. This is a money play for Chris Paul. See More

Basketball Play - Fake Hand Off Gap Drive

Fake Hand Off Gap Drive

Matt Hackenberg 04/18/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 2-1-2 alignment. This play gives a forward a nice opportunity to drive double gap to score or kick to a shooter in the corner. This play is best used in a series where the ball is entered the same way, but the hand off actually takes place. Basketball Play - Box Misdirection Screen In

Box Misdirection Screen In

Matt Hackenberg 12/31/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a set play for a three-point shot. I think this is a tricky action that can be used in "need a 3" situations. Pairing with other actions out of a box alignment will increase the set's effectiveness.
