Favorite Send to FastDrawThe turning point of our game on Wednesday Vs. Green Bay was when Green Bay went to their 3-2 zone defense. This is their defense they go to when they need to change momentum or they are on the ropes. Unfortunately for us down the stretch it did just that and they were able to come back and win the game. They attempted to go to it earlier in the second half and we had a set play ready for it. We executed it really well and got an open 3-pointer for our best shooter. Because of our preparation and execution we were able to pull them out of the 3-2 early in the second half. The play design gave our PG a screen forcing the corner guy of the zone to rotate up and play the ball. That then forced Green Bay's center to sprint out to the corner to guard our best shooter. We created a mis-match. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawYesterday I shared Part 1 of Ballscreen Shooting which incorporated three different types of screening actions. The technique the throw-behind in Frame 1, is essentially a quick evade dribble. You are trying to throw the ball out in front of you, in an effort to create separation from the hedging defender, while also making it difficult for the initial defender to recover in time before the quick release jumper. Do not allow your players to just go through the motions, set a goal to reach during each set. Example: You MUST go 7-for-10 before moving to the next sequence. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis set of pick & roll shooting drills is one of my favorites for player development. There are 189 total moves below to work on different pick & roll coverages and methods of attack at the three most popular angles. In order to keep your workouts efficient and energetic, take just one action and focus on 3-4 moves within that action from all three angles. Do not allow your players to just go through the motions, set a goal to reach during each set. Example: You MUST make 7-10 before moving to the next sequence. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThe UCONN Huskies ran this play in the 2014 National Championship game. As 1 came off the initial pick, X2 picked him forcing the pass to 2. Immediately 4 picks X2 and attacks X4 for a simple 2-man game on the wing. With 5 rolling after the initial pick X5 should be somewhat occupied in the event 2 turns the corner and attacks. To see EVERY play UCONN ran in the 2014 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawMotion Breakdowns: 2/0 downscreen with a coach is the first drill used in teaching the timing of downscreens. Coach is on left slot with a basketball. Screener has a ball on right slot. Player on the wing (2) will be receiving downscreen. Drill begins with a pass to the coach from screener. (Coach briefly has two basketballs) Screener must basket cut by stepping hard with near foot (you want the defense to jump ball side so you have clear path and screening angle.) Cutter begins "walking the arc" to set up cut. Screener jump stops into the screen. TALK! "Joey! Joey! Downscreen" Cutter excutes either curl, back, out or straight cut! TALK! "Curl! curl! Curl!" RULE: if the cutter makes an inside cut, the screener makes an outside cut and vice versa! (concept of second cutters) Coach passes first to cutter then to screener. Work drill on both sides of the floor. If you run motion these are your basic shooting drills! These are your game shots, from game spots at game speed! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawMotion Breakdowns: To begin teaching the four basic cuts of motion offense (curl, back, out, straight) use a folding chair to simulate the screener setting a downscreen. Players on the wing have a ball, they pass to coach/Asst./Mgr./player who is centered. Stress setting up the cut by "walking the arc" then sprinting the cut. Miss the chair late! Call your cut! Teach the two inside cuts (curl, back) first. Work the drill on both sides or the floor. You can have four folding chairs and four lines on a single court with players rotating from line to line. Drill should be LOUD with players calling cuts! If you run motion, this is your most basic shooting drill. Do it daily. These are your game shots! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a sideline out-of-bounds play that Brad Stevens has been running for the Celtics late in games. It has been successful both times too. There is a little misdirection with the stagger screen that gives your team a great look for your shooting guard. It is tough to defend because of the multiple options it offers. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a simple five-out zone continutiy offense vs. 2-3 zone. It is designed to involve all players in short corner, high post. Good for a team with interchangable parts. Rules: After you pass from point to wing you flare away When the ball is passed from point to wing the player in the opposite corner flashes If the ball is on the wing, the weakside wing cuts to short corner and holds there so long as the ball remains on the wing. When the ball is at the point, the team is five-out Action repeats with every ball reversal! See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawKansas Jayhawks zone lob set vs. 2-3 zone. Bill Self uses many lob plays against a zone. In this set, a double seal is set on the top layer of the zone. The point guard attacks the gap created and draws X5 to him. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawUse this action as a change-up entry into traditional zone offense. Tips: 3 can flash into soft spot in the zone, but you want them to be in position to set ball screen on X2 when 2 receives the pass. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a drill that stresses "Turnovers to Touchdowns" It gets players to react to turnovers at mid court and to turn them into easy points. Players must pass ahead sooner and dribble less in order for a team mate to get a clean lay-up. See More
Favorite Send to FastDraw2-3 Zone set play run by Kansas Jayhawks Tips: run a good shooter to the weakside corner and have 2 make a pass fake to him/her See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis baseline out-of-bounds play is not just a way to get the ball in. It gives two solids options to get a good look in the paint. It can be run against man or zone. It has a higher potential to be run against zone because of the cutting action but it is essential that if it is run against zone that the screener hits his man. This play is one I took from my father who has coaches youth basketball for over a decade and it has been his most succesful baseline out-of-bounds play. Also since it ends up in four players on the baseline, Flex can be run from it after the ball is inbounded. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawWith Horns being such a popular set at all levels I thought I’d take a look at another action that UIC ran in their game at Milwaukee. They dribbled the point guard over to the wing and had him dribble off both 4 & 5 ball screens. Milwaukee tried to defend this in multiple ways which you will see in the video below. They tried to hedge it with the 5 man, and then they attempted to switch it. I thought this action was great to get your point guard off two ball screens, then get your 2 man coming off a screen the screener for a shot. See More
