Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day May 23: Boston Celtics EOG SOB LOB

NBA Play of the Day May 23: Boston Celtics EOG SOB LOB

Daniel Murphy 05/18/2013

Down 2 with .7 left the Celtics ran this lob to tie it up vs. the Heat in a 2009 game. Coach Rivers got this play from an AAU game. This play is all about reading the screening action. If 1's defender goes under the screen, 1 would bump off the screen for a jump shot. If 1's defender tries to trail the screen or play on the outside and deny the catch then the curl for the lob is open. If 1's defender fights through the screen but does not deny 1, 1 can still catch and shoot. See More

Basketball Play - Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Doug Brotherton 04/17/2017

Brad Stevens ran this ATO set in the first half of Game 1, against the Chicago Bulls. It resulted in back-to-back baskets for the Celtics. The first basket was a lob. On the second basket, the Celtics ran the set all the way through. The key to the set is that the Celtics used their best shooter to set the back screen, which eliminated the Bulls' ability to help. More coaches should use their best shooters as a screener, when their team is in need of an easy basket. Great design by Coach Stevens! See More

Basketball Play - Orlando Magic - 2 Loop SLOB

Orlando Magic - 2 Loop SLOB

Matt Barnthouse 10/23/2018

The NBA is back, and the Orlando Magic offense looks improved. That's right, this is just one of the many plays the Magic ran in their 93-90 road victory over the Boston Celtics on October 22. The play utilizes the size of the Magic by having three players in screen situations. This particular SLOB gave Evan Fournier an uncontested dunk. They don't get more high percentage than that, folks. See More

Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers - Dive Clear Runner

Cleveland Cavaliers - Dive Clear Runner

Matt Wheeler 05/22/2018

The Cavs needed to some open shots for their supporting cast in game 3 against the Boston Celtics. They used this play to get Kyle Korver (2) one of his four three-pointers on the night. As 3 dribbles at 4, 4 goes backdoor and 1 clears to the opposite wing. This puts 2 in a position to cut off a stagger screen from 4 and 5 for the shot. Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers - Point Flares (vs switching)

Cleveland Cavaliers - Point Flares (vs switching)

Doug Brotherton 05/22/2018

In Games 1 and 2 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics got a lot of credit for their smooth switches defensively. In games 3 and 4, the Cleveland Cavaliers countered with some basic actions to pick on the switching defense. Their most effective action was their "Point Flares," with LeBron James as the passer from the middle of the floor. The corner to wing flare allows the screener to seal and cut to the rim, for a pass over the top. This set gave the Celtics fits, resulting in multiple layups for Cleveland. Basketball Play - Philadelphia 76ers - EOG Corner SLOB

Philadelphia 76ers - EOG Corner SLOB

Matt Wheeler 05/06/2018

The Philadelphia 76ers were down 2 with 1.7 seconds left in Game 3 of their playoff series with the Boston Celtics and needed to get a shot off in a catch and shoot situation. The Sixers were able to get a look for their first option in this play with Bellinelli (3) cutting to the corner to receive the pass from Ben Simmons (1) and send the game into overtime. With no timeouts left in the game, Philadelphia embedded secondary options into the play with Joel Embid (5) screening for J.J. Redick (2) at the rim. 5 seals his defender after the screen to get an opportunity at the basket. 2 cuts off the screen up top for the final option in the play.
