Basketball Play - Continuity Zone Offense - Rotation

Continuity Zone Offense - Rotation

Daniel Murphy 08/24/2015

This is 1-3-1 continuity zone offense used against a 2-3 zone defense. Against a zone defense offenses can become stagnant with a lack of player and ball movement. This rotation continuity allows an offense to keep flowing and have players cutting and move the ball side to side. As the ball is moved side to side players should look to drive gaps and score or make plays for teammates. Against an even front zone defense it's good to have an odd front zone offense and against an odd front zone defense it's good to have an even front zone offense. Against a zone defense it's important to "leave an area, replace an area" and reverse the ball (Hubie Brown). Cutting from behind the defense is also hard for a zone defense to guard. The 1-3-1 zone offense continuity rotation allows the offense to execute these key principles. Skip passes and screening the inside and outside of the zone are also effective. Dribble penetration vs. the zone defense is key to breaking the defense down. Driving gaps and making 2 defenders play 1 offensive player creates scoring opportunities for the offense. Pass fakes are another key to use against a zone defense. The pass fake can freeze or shift the zone. Two other important keys to beating zone defenses are to fast break and beat the zone before it's set and offensive rebound because defenders are guarding a man in their zone and are not always guarding the same man. An offensive player can be in one zone when a shot is taken but as the ball is in flight can move to a different zone, making blocking out more challenging for a defender. If a zone is overloaded on the weakside and a shot is taken from the strong side there is an offensive advantage on the weakside rebound. Also against a zone it's easier for perimeter players to rebound because their could be more offensive players on the perimeter and zone defenders near the basket don't have a man in their zone when a shot goes up. Using quick hitters in addition to a continity is a great strategy vs. zones. Quick hitters allow the offense to know who will be shooting the ball and from what spot. Coach Izzo from Michigan St. has some great quick hitters out of the 1-3-1 alignment that work well with the 1-3-1 zone continuity "Rotation." See More

Basketball Play - Reno Big Horns Back Screen Spread

Reno Big Horns Back Screen Spread

Wes Kosel 04/08/2015

The play starts in a 2-guard front with all five players above the free-throw line. With a reversal of the ball and a cut from 3 to the left corner, the team creates an overload on the left side which opens up the initial back-cut and lob option to 4. If 4 isn't open, he clears out as 5 dribbles across the floor looking to pass to 1 cutting to the basket. David Stockton has had success making the back-cut on this play. See More

Basketball Play - Arizona 1-4 High Clear Lob

Arizona 1-4 High Clear Lob

Wes Kosel 04/07/2015

Here is a 1-4 high play that Arizona liked to use early in the games this season. The play creates an overload on the left side of the floor to open up a quick lob for the point guard. If the lob isn't open, multiple ball-screens and hand-offs are executed to create scoring options. Arizona used this play a lot towards the end of the season, especially in the Pac-12 and NCAA Tournaments. See More

Basketball Play - Duke Zone Over the Top

Duke Zone Over the Top

Wes Kosel 04/03/2015

This play was used eary in the game against Robert Morris and resulted in a foul down low as Okafor went up for a shot off of the hi/lo pass. Coach K does a great job creating an overload that forces Robert Morris to spread out and leave 1 defender on Okafor under the basket. Okafor seals the middle man in the zone and looks for the pass over the top. In the game, x4 could have helped on the lob pass but was stuck anticipating that the ball would be pass to Tyus Jones for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - UNI High Stack

UNI High Stack

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Northern Iowa has been running some great sets in the game against Wyoming. In this play, UNI gets to an overload out of a high stack set. The point guard dribbles left as 4 cuts down into the low post. The initial scoring look is to try to hit 4 on the cut or posting up. If nothing is there, the ball is reversed and 4 sets a back-screen for 3 on the wing. 5 screens the screener (4), and 2 has two options to pass to for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Jayhawk Zone Cross

Jayhawk Zone Cross

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

The Kansas Jayhawks used this play to start the game against New Mexico State's zone defense. The play starts with the Jayhawks in an overload on the right side of the floor. Mason (1) passes to Seldon (3) away from the overload. Ellis (4) moves towards Seldon as if he is going to set a screen. Instead, Seldon passes back to Mason and Lucas (5) screens the middle man of the zone. Ellis curls around the screen and gets the pass from Mason for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - IOWA STATE 2-3 ZONE BLOB

IOWA STATE 2-3 ZONE BLOB

Jens Hakanowitz 01/25/2015

The Cyclones run this BLOB play vs 2-3 zone defenses. A typical overload play to get the ball inside. As you can see in frame 2, X5 is forced to step up to the high post to guard the ball. X4 is left on his own guarding two players (5 & 2) at the same time. One of them will be open to recieve a pass. See More

Basketball Play - Power Gap

Power Gap

Kyle Gilreath 02/05/2014

Last night the Florida Gators ran this zone offense play which lead to Freshman Chris Walker’s first points in a Gator uniform. If you watch Florida enough, you know that Billy Donovan frequently runs pick & rolls versus a zone to get two defenders guarding one and put the defense in compromising situations. This overloaded action does just that. What makes this play especially hard to guard is Florida had two point guards on the Florida making them extra dangerous on the dribble. As Kasey Hill came off the pick, not only did he have the options shown below, but he also had a throwback option to their lethal 3-point threat Michael Frazier II. Basketball Play - Rhody Back

Rhody Back

Kyle Gilreath 01/07/2014

Rhody back is another simple yet very effective screen the screener post-up play to run after using a rhody cut. In the play below, have 1 delay his dribble to the wing until 2 almost reaches the point of the screen from 4. This will occupy X4 for a second before being hit with the backscreen. If X3 and X4 do a poor job communicating on the backscreen and overload to the post, 3 will be open after the pin down from 5. See More

Basketball Play - 2 Stack

2 Stack

Kyle Gilreath 09/29/2013

This is simple yet very effective zone offense play that is one of my favorites. As 1 dribbles over, 2 overloads the floor making this play difficult to guard every option. After 5 screens in, he should try to post up hard on X5. See More

Basketball Play - Gamecock Spread

Gamecock Spread

Adam Spinella 09/13/2013

Frank Martin and the South Carolina Gamecocks use this basic motion format at times as part of their "Spread" attack. The Gamecocks usually play with four guards under Martin, although the motion sets itself okay if the 4 is also a big man. The idea of the offense isn't to penetrate the defense through dribbling, but through getting an overload on one side in order to clear the opposite for a two-man game. See More
