Basketball Play - Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

We used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

Here we look at a set play that evolves directly from the Euro Ball Screen Offense, designed to get a forward cutting to the basket for an interior touch. I love set plays that originate out of a team's main offense, effectively masking the action to make it harder for the defense to prepare for. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: Slip Spread

1-4 High: Slip Spread

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we try to steal some points with a set play designed to slip a ball screener to the rim. As simple as the action is, it works far more often than you think it might. It flows right into a spread ball screen option if the cheap points don't materialize. Basketball Play - Shallow Brush

Shallow Brush

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we have an option for using a brush screen to get a dynamic driver a gap to penetrate. If this play is well timed, it will create an advantage for the offense. I like the simplicity and the spacing. I like that it can create an advantage quickly, and doesn't require a lot of players to handle the ball. Basketball Play - 5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

5 Out: Swing DHO Cross

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we use a 5 Out alignment to get the ball inside. What I love about this set is the little on big screen that has the potential to put the defense in a tough spot if the screen is not handled well. There are endless possibilites out of the 5 Out alignment for creative play calling. 4 Out: DHO Back Screen Cross Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 4 Out transition that creates a guard cross screening for a post. I like how the back screen frees up the post player to catch the ball in prime position to read the cross screen. Basketball Play - Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

It's baffling to me how often we would score on this simple play. We used it more as a BLOB special, about once every game or so. The less often you run it, the more effective it will be. The counter action, as seen in the diagram and in the embedded video, can also create some decent looks for your team, but that action requires more work once the ball is entered than the initial action. Basketball Play - Box Zip Duck

Box Zip Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

In today’s diagram/video we look at a set play to get the ball inside. A box set is used with some misdirection to get a touch on the block. Basketball Play - Zip Pin Duck

Zip Pin Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

In this set we go back to the interior for a set play designed to get a scoring post a touch on the block. The set uses a little misdirection by dribble pushing the entry away from where the post up will materialize. The dribble push triggers a zipper cut, and the ball is swung to a player receiving a pin down screen to be open. The post who pins down, then seals up for the post entry. In this diagram we explore a set to get the ball inside. It has multile options to enter the ball into the post. You can enter it quickly, or you can reverse the ball and let the post follow, fighting for position. All the options are explored in the embedded video. Basketball Play - 1-2-2 Zone Offense: Stagger Slip

1-2-2 Zone Offense: Stagger Slip

Matt Hackenberg 11/24/2021

This is a zone set using a 1-2-2 alignment. I love the play because if nothing materializes, you are left with a 1-3-1 alignment that plays well against most zones. The ball is entered to the wing, and the wing uses a drag dribble down the sideline to shift the defense. The ball is returned to 1 who dribbles to the other side of the court while reading the defense. The action is a stagger screen with a slip into the middle of the defense. Our primary look is the slip to the middle, but we would take the stagger if the defense didn't cover it. Getting the slip in the middle opens up many options for the offense - shot, kick down, kick out. See More
