About This Play/Drill

We used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below.

  • SLICE Series

These are the basic cuts to start each play. 1 enters to wing. 2 pops to the corner. 5 goes to strong high post. 1 and 4 interchange. 5 must call for the ball on his cut every time.

  • "SLICE 1"

1 calls for the ball and then goes backdoor for lay-up. If there is no overplay, If it's not there we DO NOT throw the pass. 1 pops back to catch on the wing and 4 follows the pass for a designed reject of a side ball screen (3 would cut on the baseline reject).

  • "SLICE 2"

2 needs to take his man all the way out to the three point line and MUST call for the ball to help draw the defender out. 3 needs to pivot towards the corner and give a good ball fake. If it's not there, we DO NOT throw it. 3-4-1 double reverse, and 4 follows the pass for a designed reject of a side ball screen (3 would cut on the baseline reject).

  • "SLICE 3"

Double reversal (3-4-1). 3 shuffle cuts (the better the screen by 5, the better chance 2 is open). 4 and 5 set the double stagger screen for 2 and then flash back to the ball. 1 hits 2 for a jump shot after reading the shuffle cut. 2 must set his defender up by taking 2 hard steps away from the double screen before coming off. 4 may have to screen his own man.

  • "SLICE 4"

3 reverses to 4 and 1 should read the baseline drive (3 would dive). If that's not there, he can use the ball screen to initiate Wave. 5 fills.

  • "SLICE 5"

Clear out backdoor lob for 5 to corner of the backboard. 5 should take his man as high as he needs to get him to attempt to deny the cut. If it's not there, 3-4-1 double reverse, and 4 follows the pass for a designed reject of a side ball screen (3 would cut on the baseline reject).
