Favorite Send to FastDrawVCU Head Coach Shaka Smart was one of the hottest coaching names in the off-season, but showed his true loyalty to the program that he has built into a yearly power. This year Smart returns a line-up with experience and their offense is enjoyable and entertaining to watch. This Weave action really does a good job using the flare screen, good cutting actions, and a ball screen at the end to set-up a wide open 3 pt shot in the corner. VCU's quickness at the guard positions gives defenses nightmares with their ability to breakdown 1 v 1 off the dribble. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a set which was used by the Duke Blue Devils in order to get the ball inside to their 5 man Duke really does a good job emphasizing spacing by using the 3 pt line and their shooters are in a perfect position for a kick-out pass to the weak side The diagonal back screen sets up a quick hit for 4 in the post and the action continues with 5 screening on the wing lifting 4 off the block to the wing for a possible inside pass to 5 on the throw back from 2 Coach K's sets really make the players "read" the game and take advantage of the what the defense gives them See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a great competitive drill that works on defensive closeouts, catching drives, guarding the ball, getting chest stops, keeping the ball out of the paint, attacking closeouts and driving into the paint under control. I got this drill from my high school coach, Jay Blossom. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawEvery coach needs to know how to defend these plays we call "america's plays" because it seems everyone runs variations of these plays. These actions include cross screens, stagger screens, and back screens. Coaches can instruct defense on how to defend these actions See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawFriday night in between watching ESPNU Midnight Madness and the UCF-Louisville football game, I flipped over to the Chicago Bulls game. Tom Thibodeau runs some great offensive sets and Friday night he allowed me to add one more play to my library. The Bulls ran this play with pure perfection and timing. 1 also has the option to throwback to 3 coming off the screen from 5. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawOne of the worst feelings as a coach is watching your team get pressed and turn the ball over. Conversely, when your press is wreaking havoc and you're getting easy buckets off your defense it's a GREAT feeling. If your team is not super athletic and you're playing an athletic team that employs an aggressive full court defense this is a great drill to prepare you for the tempo and speed of your opponent. Favorite Send to FastDrawI saw this drill last week while watching the 2013 NBA Real Training Camp. The drill in frame 1 is how the Brooklyn Nets were shown performing this drill. The variation in Frame 2 came from the LA Clippers. I typically have my players circle the wagons during any live 5-on-5 action that starts in the half-court, but this drill is a great simulation to work on closing out at various angles during scramble situations. Favorite Send to FastDrawI love catching old (if you consider last season old) games on NBAtv and trying to find some new plays to share with my readers. Last night I watched a few minutes of a New York Knicks Playoff game. I loved this action because it involved a big screening a guard into a pick & roll taking screen the screener a step further. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is another action I watched last night while watching the 1987 NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics. Pat Riley called out "C" as the Lakers jogged up court. 3 (Magic Johnson) came off a baseline rub that turned into a staggered pick & roll. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawThis ball handling and finishing drill is great at teaching your players how to move in straight lines and avoid rounding off your cuts, even with the ball. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawWatching the Orlando Magic vs LA Lakers 2009 NBA Finals Game 4, I thought of this action out of an alignment Stan Van Gundy had at the end of regulation. If 2 is open on the initial stagger he is an option for a quick catch & shoot but the play is really run for the 3. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawWatching Game 6 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals between the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Magic ran this set to get Rashard Lewis an isolation to score. Stan Van Gundy did a great job getting Lewis isolated on the wing with this action because on the drive if any help rotated he had Turkoglu, Lee, and Austin to kick out to for a shot. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawI have had great success in using this drill as a way to get my players warmed up and for team-building purposes. The players must make a specified number of lay-ups before moving on to the next stage (from five passes to four passes to three passes to being done). For a lay-up to be considered to be "made", the ball must not touch the floor at any time and the lay-up must be shot with the proper hand. Make absolutely sure that your players are catching the ball with their feet in the air and coming to a jump stop. This will prevent them from developing bad habits by traveling with the ball.
