Basketball Play - Cal State Northridge Zipper 1

Cal State Northridge Zipper 1

Wes Kosel 05/29/2015

5 and 4 start at the elbows and screen down for 3 and 2. 1 dribbles to the right wing and gives the ball to 3 on the zipper cut. 2 quickly passes to 3, and 1 runs across a staggered baseline screen to the opposite corner. If 1 doesn't have a shot, 2 makes a cut off of a back screen for 4 and a cross screen from 5. If the shot for 2 isn't there, 5 runs toward 1 as if setting a ball-screen and slips towards the rim. 4 sets a ball-screen for 1. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Fist Up Fist Out

Houston Rockets Fist Up Fist Out

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

Even when the Rockets weren't punishing the Mavericks in round one with the Josh Smith-Dwight Howard pick and roll combination, they still found ways to take advantage of the defense and connect for lobs. This is a simple 1-4 high pick, with a throwback to Smith. He immediately goes into Side P/R action with James Harden, or DHO in this case. This is hard work for x4, Dirk, who shows hard on the DHO. Note the 1 and 3 switching spots on the weakside, which makes x1, JJ Barea, the low defender. As Harden hits Smith on the roll, x5 must pull over to stop the drive. JJ Barea is sitting on Howard's top leg like he is supposed to be, but that hardly matters. This is an easy Smith to Howard lob. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Grizzlies Thru Option

Memphis Grizzlies Thru Option

Craig LeVasseur 05/06/2015

Memphis ran this early offense action in Game 2 versus the Warriors. It features a thru cut by Mike Conley, and several different options branching off. 5 sets a wide pindown for 2 while 1 finishes his thru cut and curls off of 4 on the block. 3 can hit 2 on the pindown, 1 on the thru cut, or 4 sealing for a post up. If none of these options are available, 3 can reverse back to 2 and set up 2-man game with the 5, opening up a whole new set of options. See More

Basketball Play - Wing Deny-Close Outs

Wing Deny-Close Outs

Randy Sherman 04/25/2015

Wing Deny/Close Out Drill Teaching Tips: When Coach has the ball at top of circle both defenders are denying v-cuts Goal #1: knock away deflection Goal #2: force offensive player to catch going away from the basket with his/her back to the rim Force offensive players to baseline checkpoint. DO NOT GET DRIVEN OVER THE TOP! Monitor close out technique If offensive player attempt to drive middle, reach step and force your man back up the rooftop As the player you're guarding moves closer to the rim on v-cut, close the space. As they move to perimeter, stay in deny stance but move closer to the ball. Drill Advancements: Coach attempts to penetrate. Wing defender DOES NOT open up to help seal drive. Instead he/she stays in deny stance and "plugs the drive with butt" Wing player attacks baseline. Help defender helps to seal drive outside the lane Allow wing players to cross screen for one another Instruct wing player to attempt an over-the-top drive every time they catch. Defeders should reach step and force ball-handler back up the rooftop. See More

Basketball Play - Pitch Cross

Pitch Cross

FastModel Sports 04/15/2015

Pitch Cross provides a plethora of options that can be reads or calls depending on how your players progress. The basic look involves the 1 pitching the ball ahead to the 2 on the wing. The first look is always straight to the post for a quick bucket. If that is not available the 2 will then reverse the ball to the 4 who is trailing the play (usually due to taking the ball inbounds). After kicking the ball ahead the 1 shallow cuts and pops to receive the ball on the 2nd side wing. The 3 who ran the weak side wing settles at the block for a post up opportunity. If one does not present itself, the 3 then initiates cross screen down screen action by screening for the 5 who looks to post and receiving a down screen from the 4. The looks are to the post, to the shooter and if nothing presents itself whatever your motion principles are can kick in. For instance, if the ball hits the post and cutters dive and clear opposite ball reversal back to the 1 can initiate SPNR on the 3rd side. The same goes for a reversal to the 3 who doesn't have a shot. The 3 can then swing back to the 2 and again initiate SPNR action. See More

Basketball Play - Transition Track Down:

Transition Track Down:

FastModel Sports 04/15/2015

Place a cone at the feet throw line extended at the opposite end of the court. The offense can’t cut in towards the basket until after they reach that cone, which allows the defense a bit more time to catch up and avoids collisions at mid court. The defensive player works to track down the offensive player and make a play on the ball. It is important that players do not get out of control during this drill, and that they never hit one of their teammates while in the air...we don’t want anyone getting injured. Instead, the defender needs to work on doing one of the following: sprinting in front of the offensive player; knocking the ball out from behind; blocking the shot from behind; or catching up completely and working to stop further penetration. (Note: while this is primarily a defensive drill, it is also a great way for your players to learn to finish with pressure and/or small contact on the offensive side of the ball.) See More

Basketball Play - Cincinnati Elevator to Stagger Play

Cincinnati Elevator to Stagger Play

David Taylor 03/24/2015

Cincinnati ran this play in the second round of the NCAA tournament against Purdue. It should be emphasized how open 1 will get off of 5's back screen, if 1 cuts hard and 5 looks for him - if players do a poor job setting up this action, it will make it that much harder to effectively get open off the elevator screen (defender will top-lock elevator cut). It is vitally important that after 4 helps set stagger screen with 5, that he seals aggressively... If 4 does a good job sealing, he will at the very least get a high-low catch from 5. See More

Basketball Play - Michigan State Forwards Out Wide

Michigan State Forwards Out Wide

Craig LeVasseur 03/22/2015

Michigan State ran this play early against Virginia in the NCAA round of 32. MSU runs this Forwards Out look, which is very similar to NBA Chin action but with the guards and forwards inverted, and can run many different options out of it. The Wide option is designed to put x5 in multiple help situations, and here x5 overhelped on the wide pin down, resulting in a slip to the basket for an easy dunk. See More

Basketball Play - Iowa Screen the Screener

Iowa Screen the Screener

Andrew Greer 03/21/2015

This Iowa Hawkeyes set is a twist on a set that most coaches either have in their playbook or have seen on the court before. The Hawkeyes used a back screen cross screen combo to get a wide open dunk on the opposite block. In their screen the screener action the initial screener is a shooter who will receive the second screen to get to the corner. See More

Georgetown 4 Around 1

Andrew Greer 03/20/2015

Georgetown ran this 4 around 1 set throughout their Round 2 matchup with Eastern Washington. The Hoyas used several different variations of the set utilizing the similar setup but unpredictable result. The action pictured is the base set. Dribble handoffs, double screens, flare screens, and back screens were all used out of this based set. Georgetown uses a 4 out 1 in look almost every possession and can run this set with interchangeable perimeter players. See More
