Dr. Dish 10-Spot Touch-Bounce Shooting

Rick Allison 12/07/2015

This drill utilizes the Dr. Dish shooting machine to facilitate a continuous flow of shooting repetition with variation for three shooters. Variation parameters are location (i.e., shooting angle), ball handling moves and initiating dribble hand. Each shooter takes three consecutive shots to establish a repetition rhythm and allow a short refinement opportunity. Ball handling variations include different crossovers, combinations and counters. The drill framework can be used for other ball handling and shooting footwork movements, as well. See More

Basketball Play - "Huskies"

"Huskies"

Dana Beszczynski 11/14/2015

This was the opening play of last nights game between the Washington Huskies and Texas Longhorns which was played in Shanghai, China at the Mercedes Benz Arena. The game marked the beginning of the Shaka Smart era at Texas. Smart had previously coached from 2009-20015 at VCU compiling an overall record of 163-56 and included in that impressive record was a trip to the Final 4. Texas is hoping for big things under Smart not only this year, but in the years to come. Washington is coached by Lorenzo Romar entering his 14th season at the helm with a record of 270-159. The last few years have been down ones for the Huskies and Romar has a young team this year entering the PAC 12 season, but it promises to be exciting. This opening play started in a "Stack" low with the wings sprinting out to the wings and the posts men flashing high to the elbow. The play was designed hoping the 5 man's defender would overplay the flash enabling in this case Marquese Chriss to release to the ring for the lob pass from Andrew Andrews the Washington PG. The pass came up short, but it was an exciting way to start the game and a play which you can use to surprise your opponents at the start of a game! See More

Basketball Play - Charlotte Hornets ATO Play for Stretch Big

Charlotte Hornets ATO Play for Stretch Big

Jacob Collins 10/05/2015

It's never too early. I know I am itching to get back into the gym and start working with my guys. Thanks to my autorenewal of League Pass, I've been able to catch some glimpses of a few NBA teams working young guys in and trying to get timing down. This is a play for a stretch big, that came after a timeout in the 2nd half of the Charlotte-Miami preseason game on Sunday. Another resource that coaches can use in the drudgery of waiting for practice to start is NBAtv. All week last week, NBAtv's crew were running their series Inside Training Camp and it was awesome. The interaction between players is fun to watch and there is no doubt that you can take a drill from each practice. See More

Basketball Play - Floppy DHO

Floppy DHO

Cody Toppert 09/04/2015

A DHO entry to Floppy will most likely be on the wing Guard to Guard. This means the point guard would speed dribble pitch the ball to the corner wing coming up. The wing will now become the point of initiation and the point guard will be come the activated player. This look most likely proceeds to be a back screening action by the strong side big. The popular version employed by the San Antonio Spurs involves a guard-to-guard DHO and a triple staggered baseline screen for Tony Parker who sprints the base line to find the scoring option on the weak side. Important to not the weak side wing must be the second screener I order to prevent a switch on the final screen, thus negating any type of advantage or open shot. Once the defense gets use to the triple baseline screen, Tony Parker will often times enter and exit the same side, thus showing us a DHO into a traditional Floppy Look. See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Tech Corner Flare

Virginia Tech Corner Flare

Brandon Mullis 08/30/2015

Virginia Tech ran this SLOB set late in the game against Boston College this past season. The shooter was the second man in triple staggered screens/Iverson cut for the wing. The shooter then received a back screen to flare to the corner upon the baseline drive. He was wide open in the corner and knocked down the shot to pull his team within one possession with about 1 minute left to play in regulation. See More

Basketball Play - 3 Line Lay-ups

3 Line Lay-ups

Wes Kosel 08/26/2015

This is a 3 line lay-up drill that we used as a warm-up for almost every practice and pre-game routine when I was an assistant at TLU. This was a staple for our basketball program, and we used it to get the players’ bodies ready for practices or games and also to get the players focused for the practice or game ahead. It starts aiming for 55 each side, and increases the number throughout the season. This drill is great at getting your players to move, talk, and to execute. Any missed lay-ups, dropped passes, or mistakes filling lines can result in not reaching the goal. Emphasis: • Move the ball without passing • Sharp passes (do not float passes) • Finishing lay-ups • Communication (we require the players to say the name of the teammate that they are passing to or receiving a pass from) Set-up: • 3 Lines • 2 basketballs • Basketball in either the right or left line (this doesn’t matter, because the drill will switch sides half way through) Rules: • The ball should never hit the ground (no dropped passes and no dribbling) • Don’t leave early from the lines (players will tend to leave early for passes to reach the goal in the allotted time) • Always rotate to the LEFT, whether we are shooting from the right or left side • 6:00 minutes on the clock • Start with a goal of 55 on each side (players switch the drill once they reach 55, ideally close to 3:00 minutes left) Execution: Frame 1: The ball starts in the left line. 1 passes to 2. Once the pass is made to 2, both 1 and 3 can start cutting to the wings. This is where players will begin leaving early (usually the players in the far line opposite the ball). 2 passes to 3 at the wing, and then 2 runs straight up the floor into the lane. Frame 2: 3 passes to 1 for a lay-up. 3 then cuts to the opposite side of the floor for an outlet pass. After shooting the lay-up, 1 clears out to the opposite side of the floor from which he started. 2 follows the shot for the rebound (the ball shouldn’t hit the floor!). At this time, the 2nd ball would have started (Player 4 passing to 5), but for the diagram I left this out. Frame 3: 2 passes to 3, and then clears out the opposite side of the pass. Players will tend to want to follow the pass. 3 passes to the next player in the 1st line (left side of the floor), and the drill starts over again. Players 1, 2, and 3 should then rotate to the next line to the left of where they started. See More
