Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day June 6: Miami Heat Horns Flare PNR

NBA Play of the Day June 6: Miami Heat Horns Flare PNR

Daniel Murphy 05/31/2013

As tweeted by Kyle Gilreath, the Heat have been running an elbow clinic. His elbow diagrams are excellent and this is another option to add to your playbook. The Heat ran this in their 30 point 3rd quarter. Haslem stepped up big in game 5 scoring 16 points on 8-9 shooting. He hit shots from the short corner, got a catch and rip for a dunk and because the defense had to respect his jump shot is involved in the drive and kick game . See More

Basketball Play - Double Skip Pass Drill

Double Skip Pass Drill

Randy Brown 02/11/2013

This drill will help you incorporate the skip pass into your zone offense for open threes or post shots. The idea is to shift the zone with the first skip pass, then skip back over the zone to the original side for an open shot. Using a good screening angle on the second skip your best shooter can prepare to knock down a big three point basket. See More

Basketball Play - Sooner Drill

Sooner Drill

Fabian McKenzie 12/05/2012

This is a drill we have used in our warmup. We use different variations within the drill. Players line up at half court. Each player has a ball Pass to coach, cut hard to rim and receive a pass from coach. Take a traditional layup. We also use a two foot power layup. Variation - we add a blocking pad to simulate contact at the rim Players get their own rebound and must make 2 changes of direction on way back to half court. (Between legs, crossover, behind back, etc) They go back to the same line where they started. In this variation we make a reverse layup underneath the basket In this variation we have the players receive a pass just before the 3 point line. They must jump stop, shot fake and attack the elbow for a one dribble pull up jump shot. We prefer the players use a crossover step when they attack the middle Variation 1 - Have the players pull up for a 3 point shot. Variation 2 - After the shot fake, we have the players crossover and dribble to opposite side of rim for a little running hook shot. See More

Basketball Play - Cutters

Cutters

Kyle Gilreath 08/16/2013

Michigan's John Beilein ran this play versus Syracuse in the 2013 Final Four in Atlanta. This action consists of tons of movement forcing the defense to communicate and scramble around. As the defense scrambles to match-up to cutters, it is a great opportunity to set a pick & roll on the zone. Basketball Play - 5 on 4 Rotation Shell

5 on 4 Rotation Shell

Kyle Gilreath 05/31/2013

This is a drill that I love to run throughout the season to help enforce my defensive philosophy when it comes to helping on baseline penetration. My defensive philosophy is to keep the ball out of the middle of the floor. WIth that said, when the ball is in the corner I teach my players to direct the ball handler to the baseline halfway in between the 3-point line and lane line. Furthermore, the help needs to come early enough outside the lane and cut off the basket and the baseline. This is a 5 out drill because that is the style of offense we currently run. If you are guarding a team in the post, I NEVER help off the post because it opens up easy lay-ups. That is why is it vital for your help defenders to be aware and in the correct positions early. This is also a great drill that teaches your players how to scramble in defensive situations after cutting off the baseline. Make sure the coach passes to different players througout the drill to enforce the level of urgency and communication in such scrambles. Have your players move the ball around the perimeter and run the offense several times through before passing to the coach. See More

Basketball Play - Duke Pin Down

Duke Pin Down

Basketball HQ 09/03/2014

Take the action away from the pin down screen by dribbling the basketball over to the opposite side and then bringing it back quickly to the pin down screen. This will allow for the shooter to get a better look without the defense being able to key in on them. This basketball play is all about misdirection. Pin down screener needs to set a good screen and shooter needs to set his man up. The shooter doesn’t have to catch and shoot the ball off the screen. He can shot fake or rip through and make a play for himself or a teammate. This play is from the 2005-2006 Duke season. See More

Basketball Play - San Antonio's 15 SNUG

San Antonio's 15 SNUG

Mark Travis 02/07/2013

This is a play that the Spurs love to run that features a "snug" pick-and-roll between Tony Parker and Tiago Splitter. The pick-and-roll action between these two is deadly - Splitter is one of the best roll men in the league - but just in case the defense can bottle it up (which is rare), the Spurs have some sweet weakside action that can punish the defense even if they do everything right. Coach Shaka Smart has his VCU Rams (21-6, 11-3) and they are better prepared for any A-10 opponent. Here is a special zone offense play that they run. Havoc Pressure Defense is what Shaka Smart is known for. Execution is what I know Shaka Smart for. The first diagram is "Special" which is a zone quick hitter. The 2nd and 3 diagrams are the "Weave" Play zone set play. If you like this Shaka Smart Zone Offense Play then check out our website: Men's Basketball Hoop Scoop. See More

Basketball Play - UCLA Cut with Back Screen & Pin Down

UCLA Cut with Back Screen & Pin Down

Basketball HQ 09/21/2012

This play has two consecutive UCLA screens with a pin down screen on the opposite side. It is important that you set good screens and be a threat to score off of every screen. The more good screens you set the more the defense will become out of position. Set good legal screens and come off of each screen being a threat to score. Passer needs to be able to get the ball to the shooter right as he is coming off the screen if he is open. This play is from the 2007-2008 Chicago Bulls season. See More

Basketball Play - JMU CIRCLE

JMU CIRCLE

Michael Bowden 01/04/2013

This is a very simple baseline out of bounds set that James Madison runs to get open shots for their guards. JMU is ranked in the top 10 on synergy's percentage of scoring in out of bounds plays. They do a great job of setting screens, being patient with the screens and also using the screen. The end of the set allows you to flow right into your offense, whether it be 4 out 1 in, 3 out 2 in, Ball screen motion etc... See More

Basketball Play - Navy Shooting

Navy Shooting

Bert DeSalvo 01/29/2013

This is a warm up drill that we used almost every day when I was the head coach at Penn State Beaver. I got this dril from Billy Lange when I worked his camp at the Naval Academy in 2008. This simple, but effective, drill worked on our mechanics and emphasized all aspects of great shooting technique. Players are able to keep alignment, get on their toes when shooting and holding follow through in this drill. In addition, they really can see which way they are missing because of the use of hte side of the backboard. This drill can be used for time (2 minutes) or amount of shots or makes. I would also work on our two step layups or add another shooter at the front of the rim to utilize my players and the rims more efficiently. See More

Basketball Play - Post Flash with Cross Screen

Post Flash with Cross Screen

Basketball HQ 09/03/2014

This play depends on timing and a good cross screen. If it is a smaller guard coming off of the cross screen they need to finish the layup quickly or shot fake because the help side is going to be coming for the block. This post flash cross screen basketball play is a great play to get a shot right at the basket. If you have missed a couple of long shots and are struggling to score this is a good play to run. If you are running the cross screen for a wing then they need to either finish quickly or shot fake and draw the foul. Big men will be able to take their time on the finish. This play is from the 2005-2006 Duke season. See More
