Basketball Play - Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Matt Wheeler 09/09/2019

Team USA basketball faced a zone defense for much of their game against Turkey in the FIBA World Cup. They were down 1 late in overtime and ran this play to get a shot for Joe Harris (3) off of some movement. This is a common play that Gregg Popovich uses with the Spurs against man defense. They made some adjustments to run this as an effective play against Turkey's 2-3 zone defense. 1 reversed the ball to 5. Then 5 went into a dribble handoff with 2. but didn't need to set a good screen on x2. This allowed x2 to get through the screen and shift out of the wing area to matchup with 2 up top. 5 then screened x4 on the outside of the zone to get 3 open. This essentially forced Turkey to matchup man to man with x4 having to guard 3. x4 trailed on the screen and 3 was able to turn the corner on the catch and drive to the basket. See More

The Toronto Raptors ran this play late in the second overtime of Game 3 against the Milwaukee Bucks to get the ball to Kawhi Leonard (3) where he can attack the paint. After setting the flare screen 3 cuts around 5 to get the handoff. Since x3 doesn't want to give up the open three-point shot, he trails 3 on the handoff. 3 then turns the corner to attack the basket. In this situation, x5 provides help on the drive which gets 5 open. See More

Golden State Warriors - Weak Corner PNR

Matt Wheeler 05/22/2019

The Golden State Warriors used this play during the first quarter of Game 3 against the Portland Trail Blazers to get the ball to Draymond Green (4) on the roll and he can make a read to pass to the open man. Once the ball is reversed to Steph Curry (1), Green set the ball screen and rolled to the basket. The Blazers hard hedged the screen which got Green temporarily open. The Blazers had to provide help on him to take away the layup. Green read where the help came from and passed to Andre Iguodala for the open three-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Denver Nuggets - Corner OOB Elevator

Denver Nuggets - Corner OOB Elevator

Matt Wheeler 04/29/2019

Inbounding the ball from the corner can be a difficult situation. The Nuggets started this play with good spacing to make sure they got the ball in. Once 1 got the pass they ran a decoy action with 3 cutting across screens from 5 and 4 to shift the defense. 1 then dribbled back to the original side to pass the ball to 2, cutting through the elevator screen for a shot. Basketball Play - Houston Rockets - Stagger Slip SLOB

Houston Rockets - Stagger Slip SLOB

Matt Wheeler 04/29/2019

The Houston Rockets were down 5 with 24.4 seconds left in game 1 against the Golden State Warriors. They needed at least two scores to tie the game so they needed to get a quick basket and then foul to extend the game. This play worked very well against the Warriors strategy of switching all screens. James Harden (2) started the play as a decoy, setting the second screen for Eric Gordon (3). The Warriors switched off of Harden on the screen to take away an open three from Gordon. Harden then flashed to the ball to receive the pass from 5 and quickly attack the basket. Texas Tech runs this play to get the ball to their star player Jarrett Culver (3). The Red Raiders will run him off of baseline screens to get him open for a shot on either side of the floor. If he can't get open on the baseline 3 will cut up top for the pass. They will then go back to their motion principles with 4 & 5 will setting flare screens for the guards. 3 can read the play and make the pass to either cutter or screener. If the ball goes to 4 or 5 they will then go into a side pick and roll. Blog Post: Texas Tech Defense Puts Opponents on Red Alert See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - PNP Runner

Virginia Cavaliers - PNP Runner

Matt Wheeler 04/08/2019

This has been one of Virginia's favorite after-timeout plays of the NCAA tournament so far. The baseline screen for 3 is a similiar action to what they do in their Blocker-Mover motion offense but this time they run it as a set play to make sure Kyle Guy (3) gets the ball for a look at a three-point shot. 1 dribbles left off the screen to shift the defense to that side of the floor. On the airtime of the pass to 5, 1 cuts across the lane and 3 cuts off the screen from 4. 5 passes to 3 for the shot. Blog Post: Virginia's Elite Efficiency on Both Sides of the Ball See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - Single Tag PNR Defense

Virginia Cavaliers - Single Tag PNR Defense

Matt Wheeler 04/04/2019

By having their post players hard hedge the ball screens, Virginia needs to provide help when the screener rolls to the basket. X5’s first job in this situation is to redirect the ball to half court and not allow 1 to turn the corner and get in the lane. If he is too concerned about his matchup with 5 he won’t be able to provide great help on the ball screen. This is where x3 comes into play to provide help until x5 gets back to his match up . X3 has a tough job to do. He has to tag 5 and take away the pass for him rolling to the basket. He then has to change direction and close out on his man to contest the shot and take away any penetration. This is a very difficult action to guard but by being aggressive and providing early help Virginia is able to cover for each other and take away high percentage shots at the rim and open shots behind the arc.
