Basketball Play - Zig Zag Alley

Zig Zag Alley

Rory Hamilton 03/28/2017

Drill Set-up: Split your team into groups of two and line them up on the baseline. A coach will be at the top of the key on the other end of the floor. The drill starts with defensive player handing the offensive player the ball and assuming a legal guarding position. The offensive player establishes triple threat and looks to beat the defensive player 1 on 1 in the alley (lane to sideline). The goal of the defensive player is to get the offense to change directions twice before half court. Once the offensive player reaches half court, he or she will pass to the coach at the top of the key. The defensive must sprint to the level of the ball and communicate "help". The offensive player continues to the wing and uses a V-cut or L-cut to get open on the wing. The coach then will pass the ball to the player on the wing and defense closes out according to your defensive principles. On a catch, the offensive player only has three dribbles and must stay on one side of the floor. When guarding the offensive player and finishing the drill, coaches make sure each shot is challenged and followed by a box-out. You can make this drill competitive and have punitive consequences based upon what your team needs. For example, if you are having difficulty challenging shots than make every shot not contested have a consequence. Find what your team needs and make it a priority in the drill. See More

Basketball Play - 2 on 2 Vision

2 on 2 Vision

Rory Hamilton 03/28/2017

Drill Set-up: Two offensive players 1 and 2 in the slot and wing position and two defenders X1 and X2. Players 4 and 5 can be players, coaches, or managers. On coaches whistle or command "exchange", the offensive players exchange spots and both X1 and X2 open up, jump to the ball and fight thru exchange 1 player removed. After players exchange, coach passes to player in the slot and both defenders assume guarding position. X1 closes out with high hands choppy feet yelling "ball" and X2 sprints to help or deny depending on your defensive philosophy. 1 passes back to player 4 and again exchanges with offensive player on the wing and both defensive players open up, jump to the ball and fight thru exchange 1 player removed. During any point in the drill when the coach has the ball on the wing he/she may pass to the corner and the corner player drives the ball hard to the basket. The low player in the help side "I" meets offensive player outside of the paint and the top side "I" defender helps the helper and takes the hoop. The offensive player or coach passes back out to either offensive player 1 or 2 and then the defense must closeout and play live. X1 an X2 must communicate and scramble accordingly. X2 takes 1st pass out and X1 sprints to help. See More

Basketball Play - Kentucky - Side PNR Backdoor

Kentucky - Side PNR Backdoor

Matt Wheeler 03/26/2017

Kentucky ran this play multiple times in the first half of their Elite Eight game against North Carolina to get effective looks at a backdoor layup. This play can be run as a continuity offense starting with a side ball screen. 1 dribbles off of the screen and passes to 4. 4 looks for the backdoor pass and if fhat isn't available passes to the wing to get into another side pick & roll. As 2 comes off the ball screen they pass to the other post player (5) up top. 5 goes through same reads (backdoor pass or pass and follow pick & roll). See More

Basketball Play - Kentucky - Iverson Chase

Kentucky - Iverson Chase

Doug Brotherton 03/26/2017

Kentucky ran this set in their Elite 8 match-up with North Carolina. The set is well designed, as it creates an advantage in the wing pick and roll. The 4 fills to the top, in the case that the opponent tries to ice or trap the ball screen. A quick pass to 4, allows for the lob to 5. If they do not do those things, then 2 should turn the corner, looking to make a play. See More

Basketball Play - West Virginia Princeton Action

West Virginia Princeton Action

Dana Beszczynski 03/24/2017

West Virginia used this Princeton type action last night against Gonzaga in their Sweet 16 match-up. Carter runs off the FT line screen into a double stagger looking to catch & shoot off the pass from the TOK. If there's no shot, he has the option to throw inside and the 5 man's down screen or exchange with 3 can also lead to a Hi / Lo off the wing pass to the FT Line area. The play closes with a corner ball screen action when the post has no attack option to the basket and the PG makes the read shooting behind the screen. See More

Basketball Play - Gonzaga Hi / Lo Set

Gonzaga Hi / Lo Set

Dana Beszczynski 03/24/2017

The Zags have effectively used this Hi / Lo action all season and tonight to try and get and more action with their bigs to the ring they used it as well. Gonzaga has good size down low and this has been a very good action for them all season. The FT Line flash is perfectly timed as Collins comes hard to the ball side and receives the pass, with Williams turning his body for the Hi / Lo action. See More

Basketball Play - Gonzaga Box Low Post Iso

Gonzaga Box Low Post Iso

Dana Beszczynski 03/24/2017

Gonzaga fought off a furious challenge last night in the Sweet 16 from West Virginia. The Zags had difficult at times getting into their sets due to the relentless ball pressure applied from the Mountaineers. Here is a Post Iso action run from a Box set where they look to free up Karnowski off a simple back screen action in the lane. Gonzaga does a good job moving without the ball and opening up the cutting lanes as evident by the last frame here with the ball in the Post. See More
