Basketball Play - Duke ATO - Hammer Action

Duke ATO - Hammer Action

Dana Beszczynski 11/17/2016

Duke ATO - DHO - WEAK SIDE HAMMER ACTION A great play from the Duke timeout utilizing the PG as your entry man at the elbow. 1 goes into a DHO with 3 out of the corner right into a ball screen by the 5 man moving across the FT line replacing 1 on the hand-off action. As 3 comes off the ball screen, 4 steps up to set the weak side Hammer Screen for 2 who drifts to the corner looking for a possible pass and shot attempt. Duke shows great shot clock management, as the primary option is not open, the ball gets reversed and thrown into the post. 2 Kennard makes a great read coming from the weak side corner, cutting to the FT line area making himself an option if the ball cannot be passed inside and showing the importance of moving without the ball. 1 & 2 exchange, ball gets kicked-out to 2 who cannot make a play. He throws the ball back inside, cuts into the lane for a possible give "n" go pass. 5 throws the ball out to 4 who dribble flips with 3 and sets a side ball screen. 2 Allen comes off the side ball screen action and gets a wide open jumper. A great look at how to utilize all options off a play and manage clock. See More

Basketball Play - SLOB Hammer

SLOB Hammer

Mo Dakhil 08/22/2016

The 2 pops to the weakside wing. The 1 sets a back pick for the 5 and gets a screen from the 4 in a pick the picker action to get him the ball on the strong side wing. Immediately on the catch the 1 drives baseline. The 5 sets the hammer screen to bring the 2 to the corner. The 2 can also cut on the inside if his defender jumps to the outside to take the corner away. The 4 can set a screen for the 3 as well. See More

Australia ran this play down 85-84 with 41.4 seconds left in their bronze medal game against Spain. Matthew Dellavadova (1) got the inbounds pass off of the screen from 3 and drove baseline looking for Patty Mills (2)in the corner. Spain took away the hammer screen from Aron Baynes (5), so Mills cut to the FT line and received the pass from 1 for the shot to give them the lead. See More

Basketball Play - Detroit Pistons - Post Hammer

Detroit Pistons - Post Hammer

Greg Youncofski 05/03/2016

The Pistons ran this set out of a timeout. This set is effective for many reasons. First, they get the ball into the post which means everyone on the defense has to be ready to rotate to help prevent an easy basket. Next, the split screen up top on the strong side grabs X2’s attention because he has to be ready to stunt at 1 if X1 is late on the recovery/X1 and X4 do not switch. All of this action (the post up/split screen) sets the defense up for what Detroit really wants to get here—the hammer screen. Well-designed play with many options, including 5 on a slip. See More

Basketball Play - Denver Nuggets - Zip 2 Angle Hammer

Denver Nuggets - Zip 2 Angle Hammer

Adam Spinella 04/12/2016

This action is a wrinkle on the popular NBA Hammer action by flooding the strong side with movement and screens. Most zipper actions are run to swing the ball across sides of the floor, so help defense will particularly fall into the trap after the zipper screen when the action returns to that strong side. That allows the hammer to be run to perfection. And with sharpshooter Danilo Gallinari as a screener, there's little opportunity to give help away from him. The Sixers help off Will Barton in the corner instead, and that allows Gallinari to get to the rim for the dunk! See More
