Basketball Play - Motion X

Motion X

Kyle Gilreath 10/24/2013

John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats ran this motion action during the 2013 Final Four. This is a great set that creates movement and ends with a side pick & roll after a quick pin-down. If 2 can turn the corner and beat X4 there is limited help to the rim; the only option being X5 which could lead to an easy pass to 5 if X3 fails to rotate down as well. Basketball Play - Triangle Down

Triangle Down

Kyle Gilreath 10/24/2013

The Miami Heat ran this action versus the Pelicans Wednesday night to get Chris Anderson an easy dunk at the rim. As 1 was screening for 3, the defense became very oppupied with defending Wade (not seeing the ball). Furthermore, X2 and X5 did not communicate and both ended up on 2, leaving 5 wide open rolling to the rim with no helpside. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Twist

Horns Twist

Last night in their win over Oklahoma State, the Memphis Tigers ran this post iso action in the 2nd half. One small piece of this play that is very popular is sending the post passer through to the weak side. Many coaches keep their post passer strong side and this allows for an easy dig or double down which disturbs the post isolation. See More

Basketball Play - "Rhody"

"Rhody"

Kyle Gilreath 12/06/2013

Halfway through the 2nd half of their loss to UCONN, Florida head coach Billy Donovan called out this play to PG Scottie Wilbekin to get his Gators to run some offense for multiple looks. If you follow the Gators or Coach Donovan, you know he is one of the best at teaching and executing continuity offense. While they frequently run baseline runner/rhody actions, I love this new addition to his playbook. There are multiple scoring opportunities to attack any defensive adjustments in this action. Basketball Play - Loop Hi-Lo

Loop Hi-Lo

Kyle Gilreath 12/19/2013

Tuesday night in their nail biting loss to South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast ran this half-court set for a post hi-low isolation. After spending many years at Kansas under Bill Self, it is no surprise that FGCU coach Joe Dooley frequents hi-low actions. If 3 can set a solid screen the goal is for 5 to try and catch in the middle of the paint for a quick score. However, if X5 fights over top of the screen of X3 and X5 switch, 5 is to seal his man on the top side for a lob pass over the top for a finish. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Up

Rhody Up

Kyle Gilreath 01/06/2014

This week I am going to share a series of plays that begin with rhody cuts. I term a rhody cut a cut from wing to wing above both elbows, usually off a screen or rub from one or both bigs. Some may refer to this action as an Iverson cut. This first action is a simple one without a lot of moment that gives your point guard a rim attack. If X4 of X2 sinks down to prevent the lay-up, look to skip to the opposite corner to 2. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Elevator

Rhody Elevator

Kyle Gilreath 12/03/2014

This Rhody option is one to run as a quick hitter in a Need 3 situation. Once again it is essential that 2 cuts shoulder to shoulder off the screens from 5 and 4 to encourage X5 and X4 to become occupied with the cut that they do not see the elevator action coming. Furthermore, if X5 sniffs out the play and tries to deny the pass to 3, slip 5 to the rim for a lay-up (If you don't need a 3 pointer). See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Triple

Rhody Triple

Kyle Gilreath 01/10/2014

This Rhody play is one of my favorites as it incorporates a ton of movement to put the defense in compromising positions. In Frame 2, as 3 starts attacking the rim, the triple stagger will occupy most (if not all) of the weak side defense as they become concerned with guarding the stagger screen. If 3 cannot get to the rim, look to throwback to 2, or 4/5 slipping to the rim after setting their screens. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Exchange Up

Rhody Exchange Up

Kyle Gilreath 01/10/2014

The last Rhody play for this weak creates more movement amongst the bigs and results in a middle pick & roll. As 4 uses the screen from 5, 1 should look at 4 for a second as he could be open. However, that is a tough passing angle so more than likely 1 will keep it. (If you want to feed 4, 1 should quickly advance to 3 for a wing post feed). By having 5 set a screen for a player to the rim the goal is to get X5 to help momentarily and cause him to be late on the pick & roll. As a result, you will have three options of a attack: 1. 1 attacking the rim 2. 1 throwing back to 5 at the free-throw line for a jumper 3. X2 helps on penetration and kick to 2 for a shot See More

Basketball Play - Elbow Elevator

Elbow Elevator

Kyle Gilreath 01/13/2014

The Brooklyn Nets ran this elbow action in their game versus the Miami Heat. As 3 (Joe Johnson) came up the lane for the 3-pointer, X4 sniffed out the action and helped to prevent the catch. This allowed 4 (Paul Pierce) to slip to the block for a post-up. See More

Basketball Play - 3 Quick

3 Quick

Kyle Gilreath 02/14/2014

Wichita State frequented this play last year in the 2013 Men's Final Four. The first option is to hit 3 cutting off the post for a lay-up. If he isn't open, 5 steps out for a middle pick & roll and replace for 1. To see EVERY play Wichita State ran in the 2013 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More

Basketball Play - Box Power

Box Power

Kyle Gilreath 02/18/2014

Occasionally North Carolina's Roy Williams will pull PG Marcus Paige off of the ball and put him at the SG spot. This is exactly what he did in this play the Tar Heels ran in their win over Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon. Furthermore, UNC big man James Michael McAdoo has been unstoppable on offense and continually fed him the ball in the post. Below you can see that the 3 screens McAdoo (4) into the post before setting the first screen of the stagger for Paige. See More
