The set has two primary looks: 5 on the post up coming off the downscreen into the post and 2 with a catch and shoot opportunity coming off the STS action. 2 is a better screening target if he sets a great backscreen. This past Summer at Coaching U Live in Indianapolis, Florida head coach Billy Donovan shared a play from his Hook series. Below are two options that put the defense in hard-to-guard situations. In Option 1, the backside is cleared out so if X5 does not help on the backscreen, 1 will get a lay-up. IF X5 does help, there will be no help on the pick & roll. In their Game 4 win of the 2014 NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs ran this half-court set which included a multitude of actions. As soon as 3 cleared 4, 2 was moving to set the backscreen. This timing allowed for 5 to pin-down for 2 and receive the ball on the move popping out. 5 set such a good pick and sealed in the lane that X4 had to help in the lane and allowed for an open throwback to Diaw. A drive to the basket or a kickout for a 3 are the main options of this play. You need to have your best ballhandler on the 1 and the best shooter on the 2. Coming off the dribble handoff and attacking the basket forces the defender of 5 to help on the drive. Meanwhile 5 sets a backscreen for the shooter, who flares out to the corner. There is no defender left to cover this action. That leads directly to an open look from the 3 point line. See More
