Basketball Play - 2 out 3 in Motion - Intial Alignment

2 out 3 in Motion - Intial Alignment

Andrew Lacey 03/18/2017

Today’s basketball offense breakdown comes from the 2 Out 3 In Motion Offense. Iowa State used the concepts once used by Steve Alford when he was at New Mexico. The 2 Out 3 In motion offense is very unique, which allows the post area to become open for isolation plays and opens up dribble penetration and backdoor cut plays. Iowa State made this key adjustment in the first half against Nevada when they struggled to get much out of their ball screen sets. See More

Coach John Calipari is known for his Dribble Drive Offense. However, with the size and skill that he puts on the floor nigh in and night out he has the ability to take advantage of mismatches early in the possession. Often overlooked is his ability to create movement before the dribble drive concepts take place. Below is a nice 1-4 set that he used against Stony Brook that created multiple scoring options as well as opened up driving lanes. See More

Basketball Play - Miami- Roll/Replace Action

Miami- Roll/Replace Action

Coach Jim Larranaga wants to play up-tempo and score in transition. This year they have concentrated more on getting the ball inside the paint more. Even though it has a modern day (4 Out) look it still has an old fashion (inside-out) approach to basketball. To execute this plan they use a variety of ball screen type action and roll/replace concepts. Having a very good point guard that can drive and shoot makes this tough to defend. See More

Start in a 1-2-2 alignment with your bigs on the blocks. 1 will dribble the basketball away from the side he wants to enter the ball. (ex. Go away from your best shooter). As one is coming back to the shooter's side; 4/5 will set a double screen (elevator screen) for the shooter (2 in this case). 2 will sprint around the screen and back to the ball side corner looking for the shot. 3 will slide to the weak-side corner. If 2 is not open for the pass/shot. 5 (or the post thats at the top of the double screen) will set a screen for the 4 (or post at the bottom of the double screen). 4 then curls tight off the screen looking for a pass from 1. As we keep trying to improve our offensive efficiency, more and more teams are moving towards using ball screens to create scoring opportunities. At Varina we use various alignments to put the defense in a situation to limit what they can do help-side wise to defend our quick game. This is a action we use out of our 1-4 set in late game situations to get a quick shot. See More

With the growing amount of teams using the ball screen in today's game; we decided to implement a couple simple quick ball screen actions that were not apart of our basic ball screen movements. The Ball screen is one of the toughest actions to guard in today's game. We have found it easy to get a get quality look in the lane off our ball screen sets. I discussed in my article published in the Winning Hoops Magazine (Sept./Oct. Edition) -"Using Ball Screens in your Motion Offense" that we generally use our ball screen actions after we get the defense moving. See More

Here is an little adjustment to the UCLA to Ball Screen action that I posted earlier. Here we use the UCLA (rub cut) and allow the Post to reverse the ball to change the sides of the floor. You can get a nice ISO inside early on the reversal or you can wait for the jumper as the second option. See More

Here is a nice little ATO set that can be used in late game situations or when you need a basket. Starting in a 1-4 High alignment can allow for the defense to be vulerable to the back door cut. Nonetheless the ball screen actions will draw a lot of attention and allow for the three on the wing or the reversal and throw inside. See More

Here is a little slip action that can be used as part of your secondary break or as an option in your motion offense. It can serve as a counter action if your set a lot of wing ball screens with the first post that arrives. See More

Here is a nice 1-4 Low set that gives your the inital option to have your point or lead guard take his man off the bounce. As that is playing out the other players create some movement to have defense looking to defend cutters. You can get a nice Hi-Lo out of your post game or catch and shoot option for your wings.
