Basketball Play - Maryland Terrapins

Maryland Terrapins

Dana Beszczynski 11/13/2012

This play comes from the game between the Maryland Terrapins and the Kentucky Wildcats. This was a set Maryland used early in the game looking to free Dez Wells at the top of the key for a jumper. Easy to set-up and run, a great set for either a post-up 4 man or a strong shooting 3. See More

Basketball Play - 3FTC Close-Out 3on2, 2on1

3FTC Close-Out 3on2, 2on1

Greg White 09/28/2012

This is a great drill to instill in your players how and when transition offense begins: with a rebound. The drill starts with 2 offense players and 3 defenders. The Coach passes to an offensive player who either (1) shoots a 3 or (2) shot fake and drive. Multiple things can be worked on just at this point. Shooting under pressure, close out, help on basket drive and offensive players attacking off dribble. Once the defense is in control of the ball, the drill is 3 on 2 to the other end. Whichever player shoots the basketball comes back as the defender in a 2 on 1 scenario. The two remaining players "trail" the play and become the two offensive players with the next group. See More

Basketball Play - Hand Off Single/Double

Hand Off Single/Double

Basketball HQ 08/28/2012

This set was run by the Chicago Bulls in the 2006-2007 season. This set works best if your point guard can shoot the ball. The play is designed to get your wing in an isolation postion off of the hand off from 4, and if he can't create his own shot, he has the point guard coming off a double screen for a three point shot, or his shooting guard coming off of a single screen for a midrange or three point shot depending on how the defense is playing. Basketball Play - Purdue Boilermakers - Stack Under "3"

Purdue Boilermakers - Stack Under "3"

Rory Hamilton 03/16/2024

Box Alignment with shooting guard 2 at the elbow who curls off the 4 to the weak side block. The 3 comes off a screen from the 5 to get a catch on the wing. The 3 immediately throw the ball into the post while the point guard 1 spaces away. On the 5's catch, the 4 dives to the weakside block setting a screen for the 2 for a 3pt shot at the top of the key. See More

Basketball Play - Twist BLOB vs 2-3 Zone

Twist BLOB vs 2-3 Zone

Justin Lewis 12/23/2023

This play was developed to take advantage of 2-3 zones that sought to take away the middle on inbounds. I saw a team on film that dropped a top defender down to help defend the basket and saw an opportunity for two easy screens to create two open shots. Zones tend to struggle guarding the weak side corner and the weak side block at the same time. See More

Basketball Play - 2-1-2 "Corners" Zone Offense (vs Odd Front)

2-1-2 "Corners" Zone Offense (vs Odd Front)

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

"Corners" is our base zone offense against 1-3-1 zone, 3-2 zone, and any type of extended half court or 3/4 court. It provides great spacing to play against any form of trapping defense with the 2-1-2 alignment. Fake passes are critical, as well as not throwing passes with a lot of loft on them. Once in the scoring area, we look to dive our high post and flash to the middle when the ball gets to the corner. Basketball Play - 5 Out Circle Motion ("Tennessee")

5 Out Circle Motion ("Tennessee")

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

The Circle Motion is an easy offense to implement and provides opportunities to score from screening and cutting. The simplicity is what I like about the offense the most. The diagrams break down a lot of the details of how to execute the offense, and the embedded video shows what the options look like at game speed. I wrote a 30 page detailed breakdown of this offense and it is available for purchase on my sellfy: https://sellfy.com/coachhack.go/p/ten... Basketball Play - Drill: Interior Touch Series

Drill: Interior Touch Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we go through a series of drills we used with our post players during our guard/post breakdown portion of practice. We believed that using these basic drills on a regular basis would improve the footwork and touch of our interior players. We used medicine balls instead of basketballs while we filmed this, but that was not a regular occurrence. Basketball Play - Warrior Rebounding Drill

Warrior Rebounding Drill

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we get a drill we used during our positional breakdown portion of practice for our post players. It teaches rebounding, offense and defense in some capacity, and challenges player’s endurance. I really like how it teaches players how to create shots inside with limited space. Basketball Play - 5 Out Motion Offense

5 Out Motion Offense

Joel Hueser 09/26/2021

We take great pride in being the best motion team we can be. Learning to play this way is not easy. I often compare motion to reading. It takes time, but once you know how it's really worth it. In order for our offense to be successful—we must play harder, smarter, and more together than our opponent. Our motion offense helps to coordinate all of our individual skills into a cohesive team unit. No longer will skills be thought of as individual, but rather a contributing asset to our team play. Each player will maintain his own creativity and initiative because our offense is flexible enough to expose such assets. Most often we function with four perimeter players around one inside player. There are also times when we are most efficient with our five best players on the floor. This five out, positionless concept is also the set we encourage all of our youth programs to implement. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Too often a player is marked as a “big” early in his adolescence, only to stop growing by his freshman year. By this time his skill level is lagging behind the others and the transition back to the perimeter is insurmountable. If you are a youth coach, the greatest service you can do for your players is to teach them the fundamentals of the game and allow everybody to play inside and out. Our best teams have always been made up of highly skilled players who could do it all. See More
