About This Play/Drill

The Circle Motion is an easy offense to implement and provides opportunities to score from screening and cutting. The simplicity is what I like about the offense the most. The diagrams break down a lot of the details of how to execute the offense, and the embedded video shows what the options look like at game speed.

  • "Tennessee" Continuity

    -HARD cuts & HARD screens make the offense go

    -The spots are interchangeable but to start we want shooters in the corners, cutters on the wings and a screener at point

    -We need to initiate from the deep wing for screening/cutting angles, not the slot

    -Reversal man needs to work to get open, starting at the FT line

    -Point and 2 wings are attack positions - look for 1 on 1 opportunities and ATTACK to score or drive and kick

    -Any point to wing pass triggers the continuity

    -Wings align 1 step above FT line

  • "Tennessee" Continuity Cont.

    A wing entry pass triggers the point to sprint to screen (Urgency to get to the spot between the butt cutter's defender and the rim). The wing passer should not use his dribble unless he is attacking downhill, and needs to have pride in the accuracy of his passes (In the shooting pocket). The weak side wing makes the "butt cut" (may back cut if overplayed) and fills corner, but must cross the mid line with his cut before going to the corner. The top and corner engage in a down screening action. The down screener should get in line with the butt cutter's defender setting a rub screen and then line up the down screen (He doesn't need to take more space towards the player receiving the second screen, just measure). The player setting the down screen wants to cross through the elbow for spacing purposes and MUST MAKE CONTACT. The player receiving the screen must "walk the arc" to set up the screen and change pace and direction. This is a great "bunch" concept to attack a switching defense.

  • "Tennessee" Cont.

    Top denied = crab dribble at back door and fill from behind. When passes are denied, it's a good time to look for downhill driving gaps.

  • "Tennessee" Cont.

    When teams "play the play" or play an extreme sagging style of defense going under the screen, we give our butt cutter the option to L-Cut to the TOK. This keeps the defense honest and gives the opportunity to shoot at the TOK or make a dynamic drive on a closeout. We have our down screener fill out the corner, and our player that would normally recieve the pin screen to pop out ot the wing when the player at the TOK is ready to reverse the ball to keep the continuity going
