Basketball Play - UCLA Back Screen / Stagger Action

UCLA Back Screen / Stagger Action

Dana Beszczynski 12/03/2013

This is the opening play run by the UCLA Bruins in their match-up against Nevada the ther night. Steve Alford is in his first season at the head of the storied UCLA program. Alford left New Mexico where he built a winning program and made the Lobos a yearly team for discussion come NCAA Tourmament time. This play is a well designed action run out of Transition as the flashing post takes away thte weak side help on the backdoor action which opens the play. The stagger screen is set-up by the down screen at the elbow for the PG. With a good screening action, the Bruins were able to get an open look at the three right at the outset of the game. See More

The Nevada Wolfpack ran this Motion set in their game against the UCLA Bruins This is a well designed play with a lot of movement, post-up option, and the use of the Shuffle Cut The Wolfpack are a fairly young team this year, but are exciting to watch See More

Halfway through the 2nd half of their loss to UCONN, Florida head coach Billy Donovan called out this play to PG Scottie Wilbekin to get his Gators to run some offense for multiple looks. If you follow the Gators or Coach Donovan, you know he is one of the best at teaching and executing continuity offense. While they frequently run baseline runner/rhody actions, I love this new addition to his playbook. There are multiple scoring opportunities to attack any defensive adjustments in this action. If you are looking for some hi-lo plays for your team, spend some time watching the Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks. He does a tremendous job putting his players into positions to create mismatches and seals and allow for simple hi-lo play. The Jayhawks ran this post-up action for Jeff Withey in the 2012 Final Four. To see EVERY play Kansas ran in the 2012 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More

Basketball Play - Thad Boyle Elbow Stagger / Mid Ball Screen

Thad Boyle Elbow Stagger / Mid Ball Screen

Dana Beszczynski 01/12/2014

This is a nice play run by Thad Boyle and the Buffs of Colorado The Buffs have a very talented PG in Spencer Dinwiddie who with his size and athletic ability can really breakdown a defense The use of the UCLA screen to set-up the double stagger is well executed and what makes this play well designed is the end when no shot is available, as it runs right into a SPNR with an open floor for Dinwiddie to breakdown the defense or read and make the kick-out pass See More

The Kentucky Wildcats ran this half-court set during the 2012 Men's Final Four. Coach Calipari does a great job with this action occupying the weak side defense with a double (stagger) action. 2 had the option of using the pick & roll (with Anthony Davis rolling), or he could turn down the screen because X1 and X4 consumed with the weak side action.
