Basketball Play - NBA Golden State Warriors: Dribble Hand-Off / Pick and Roll Action

NBA Golden State Warriors: Dribble Hand-Off / Pick and Roll Action

Scott Peterman 05/24/2015

Here is a NBA Golden State Warriors Dribble Hand-Off / Pick and Roll Action from Game 3 of the NBA Western Conference Finals. Steve Kerr is doing an excellent job in getting great motion and action into his set plays for their players. The Golden State Warriors are the team that I want to watch in the NBA Play-offs for my new sets. Steve Kerry has installed a system that is like the NBA San Antonio Spurs in it's movement, flow and creativity. The starters and reserves have bought into this system all season. David Lee is even getting a second chance in these NBA Playoffs. He is seizing the moment too. Stephy Curry and Klay Thompson are indeed the Splash Brothers and either of them can go off for 20 points in a quarter at any moment. Curry is the MVP, but Thompson is likely to go off on any night. They were one of the best teams ever in the regular season, despite the trip up from the always difficult Memphis Grizzlies. I love this action and you will notice that I chose a play where Steph Curry isn't in the game. It's an example of how their reserves have bought in. Basketball Play - Gregg Popovich San Antonio Spurs: 2-1-2 Scissor Option 2

Gregg Popovich San Antonio Spurs: 2-1-2 Scissor Option 2

Scott Peterman 03/04/2015

One of the most common three on three play in basketball is splitting the post and scissoring off the post, or first cutter and second cutter. This play uses an double staggered down screen. It involves the high post man and both guards. It's a great way to get your point guard a great shot. Gregg Popovich has built a good portion of his career wins on the efforts of veteran-laden teams, led by Hall of Famer David Robinson and future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, playing a traditional, grind it out style of inside out basketball. It's been a style that was extremely successful, winning Popovich almost 65 percent of his regular season games (more than 53 games a season) and five NBA Championship Titles. Basketball Play - Chris Mooney Richmond Spiders Inbounds Slip Play

Chris Mooney Richmond Spiders Inbounds Slip Play

Scott Peterman 03/04/2015

Chris Mooney and his Richmond Spiders have been very successful on their inbounds plays this year. They beat #22 VCU Rams last wednesday. They used this inbounds play to force a second overtime. Coach Mooney thought that it was important for his inbounds an waited a split second for T.J. (receiver) to get free on the other side of the basket and didn't throw it to him as soon as he slipped free. Coach Shaka Smart remarked that he would love to have that play back again. Gregg Popovich San Antonio Spurs: 2-1-2 Scissor Option 1

Scott Peterman 03/01/2015

Even with the San Antonio Spurs being on a four game losing streak and the sky appears to be falling in the Alamo City, Gregg Popovich still has five championships and won over 1,000 NBA games. What is the secret to the San Antonio Spurs and Gregg Popovich? I think that Gregg Popovich has instilled a culture with the San Antonio Spurs and it's produced a dynasty. Basketball Play - Mike Budenholzer Atlanta Hawks: Stretch Four Shooter Play

Mike Budenholzer Atlanta Hawks: Stretch Four Shooter Play

Scott Peterman 02/28/2015

Mike Budenholzer and his ball sharing, pass-happy scheme have teh Atlanta Hawks on top of the NBA Eastern Conference Standings. Coach Budenholzer says that he likes seeing his players get on each other when someone strays from his lessons on court spacing, pick and rolls, and pass after pass. The Atlanta Hawks were long know for isolation basketball. They had to change their ways when Mike Bedenholder was hired from the San Antonio Spurs. Now there is balance among all the five starters scoring in double figures. I really liked this Stretch Four Play for Kyle Korver of the Atlanta Hawks. Basketball Play - Bill Self Kansas University Set Play: 1 Drive or Kick

Bill Self Kansas University Set Play: 1 Drive or Kick

Scott Peterman 02/28/2015

Kansas coach Bill Self has a simple formula for evaluating his team’s three-point shooting numbers: Thirty percent from three equals good offense. The 30 percent isn't the percentage of made baskets, but it's the percentage of shots taken from the arc. If 30 percent of KU’s shots are coming from behind the arc, that’s a number that Self can live with. Coach Bill Self believes in playing inside then out. Coach Bill Self doesn't believe in launching from deep even if he is having trouble finding consistent post scoring this season. This basketball play takes advantage of his guards getting to the basket and finding the post on the roll. This season, the Jayhawks are hitting 39.6 percent from three-point range, which ranks 19th in the country. But after 22 games, the Jayhawks have taken just 29.4 percent of their shots from behind the three-point line. That ranks 289th in the country and is just slightly more than last season (28.6 percent). In conference play, the number has increased only marginally, to 29.9 percent, which aligns close to the 30 percent mark that Bill Self feels comfortable with. Philosophies on outside shooting vary from team to team, and coach to coach. No. 1 Kentucky, for example, takes three-pointers on 30 percent of its field-goal attempts, while Wisconsin, the nation’s most efficient offense, hoists threes on 36 percent of its shots. He incorporates ball screens into transition and his half court offense. Rick Pitino believes in ball movement and spacing. His Lousiville Cardinal offense will change based on the available talent. If it's a good passing team then they will have more motion. He thinks that an effective coach will be prepared both offensively and defensively. Coach Rick Pitino thinks that you should improve your players and help them reach their potential. Basketball Play - Fred Hoiberg Iowa State Set Play: 2-3 High Ball-Screen #2

Fred Hoiberg Iowa State Set Play: 2-3 High Ball-Screen #2

Scott Peterman 02/22/2015

Fred Hoiberg has turned Iowa State into a fast-paced offensive machine, akin to the Warriors in the NBA. The Iowa State Cyclones offense is predicated upon fast tempo, unselfish ball movement, three-point shooting, and positional versatility. PerNCAA.com, Hoiberg’s squad sits at 11th in the nation in scoring offense and 11th in field goal percentage. According to Ken Pomeroy, Iowa State plays at the 13th fastest pace in the country and ranks eighth in the nation in offensive efficiency. The efficiency stems from the infectious ball movement instilled by Hoiberg, reflected by the team’s second best assist per game average in the country. When the Cyclones click on all cylinders, they look like a team destined for a deep run in March. Fred Hoiberg Set Play; 3 Guard Screen the Screener

Scott Peterman 02/21/2015

Iowa State Head Coach Fred Hoiberg likes to use plays that create multiple scoring options at the rim and from the 3-point range. This 3 Guard Screen the Screener play is exactly what I am talking about. Fred Hoiberg has always stressed proper spacing as a key component for offensive efficiency. Since he took over the reins of the Iowa State program in 2010-2011. ISU's offense have evolved around outstanding shooters who space the floor and make the extra pass to find the open man. Basketball Play - David Blatt Horns 1 Set Play

David Blatt Horns 1 Set Play

Scott Peterman 02/19/2015

David Blatt been around the Israeli and Euroleague basketball circuit. Including coaching for Maccabi Tel Aviv (they de bezt, alweyz de bezt) and the Russian National Team (Kirilenko, Mozgov, Shved). He coached Anthony Parker back into the NBA. Names don't exactly get the point across, but let it be known, that he has coached winning teams, almost exclusively. And thats the point of the game. From what I can gather Blatt's teams run a lot through a horns offense. Which, if you don't know, puts two guys- one on either- high post (witch's nipple), two guys in opposite corner/wings and starts with the ball handler at the top of the key. It is not a triangle offense, but it does revolve around cerebral players creating space with passing, smart cutting and good footwork. Certainly a proprietor of the Triangle has respect for this, a verySpurs-y set of offensive goals. Everybody needs touches to make this kitten purr. Everyone needs to fill the open spaces that relate to their skill set, and everyone must become a threat when they have the ball.
