Basketball Play - Timeline Drills / 4.Two foot layup

Timeline Drills / 4.Two foot layup

Tom Kelsey 10/26/2012

Got this drill from Duke and watching JJ Reddick. After catching the ball, crossover and get into the paint. Objective is to get to the other side of the rim. Two foot layup allows player to get balance and protect the ball. This is a game like drill that gives players confidence when penetrating the paint. Give them moves where they can score at the rim vs. defense. See More

Basketball Play - Timeline Drills / 3. Cross over to the elbow

Timeline Drills / 3. Cross over to the elbow

Tom Kelsey 10/25/2012

Player must quickly move around defender or cone. Drill puts presure on player to catch, dribble and move to shooting area without traveling. Spend time working with players on using proper footwork. This drill helps players catch the ball in game like situations. Can never work too much on footwork. Being able to catch and put the ball on the floor is a skill. Like other skills it has to be drilled properly. See More

Basketball Play - 2 lines outlet pass (continuous)

2 lines outlet pass (continuous)

Tom Kelsey 10/20/2012

Very good drill for pre-season practices. Teaches timing and proper rebounding fundamentals. Emphasize players to go up as high as possible. Get rebound at the height of jump. Turn away from defense and keep the ball under the chin until making outlet pass. Works on exploding off the floor, landing on balance, pivoting and make a crisp pass. See More

Basketball Play - 3 on 3 drill

3 on 3 drill

Tom Kelsey 10/19/2012

Make this a competitive drill. Divide teams evenly. If the shot is made by the coach ball comes back out and drill starts over. Make defense find the offensive player first before going to blockout. Don't just run toward the rim. Additional ways to make this drill effective: Use Zipedo or other device to put on rim so ball can not go through the net. One of the most effective ways we have run this drill has been with an oversized basketball. The bigger basketball will make players grab the rebound. Also, the ball is difficult to make on the shot forcing a rebound situation. See More

Basketball Play - Getting open vs. tough defense

Getting open vs. tough defense

Tom Kelsey 10/05/2012

The defense will overplay this drill. Offense is not allowed to go back door. The offensive player has a goal of catching in the operational area (FT extended, on the 3 point line). Once receiving the ball in the operational area there are more opportunities to score or make a play. 3 ways to get open. A lot of this footwork is from Pete Newell and his Big Man Camp video. Basketball Play - Hit the post and move with post man guarded

Hit the post and move with post man guarded

Tom Kelsey 10/05/2012

Add live defender on the post. Make defender push offense off the block if possible. Post man tries get down on the post defenders leg. Sit on the leg to take the post defenders ability to move. Perimeter has to read the defense. Make sure pass is away from the defense. If defender gets caught behind post player on one a particular side make sure to deliver the pass so defense can not deflect the ball. See More

Basketball Play - Hit the post and move with perimeter defense

Hit the post and move with perimeter defense

Tom Kelsey 10/04/2012

Adding in the defender on perimeter and allowing post to set down screen creates a game like situation. Perimeter works on taking defense into the lane to set up coming off the screen. Post player wants to set the screen on a spot on the floor that allows a quick pivot and post up. Don't want to set the screen too low or too high, but wants to set the ball as close to the block as possible. Post players need to post up big and take up a lot of space. They want their back foot up and facing the passer. Both feet and chest need to be facing the passer. Also teach post players when posting they should be able to see the back of their hands while posting up on the block. Finger tips to the ceiling and palms up to improve the ability to catch. Perimeter works on passing with pressure on the ball. See More

Basketball Play - Hit the post and move

Hit the post and move

Tom Kelsey 10/01/2012

This is a great base series to work on feeding the post. Use this drill during your ballhandling session in practice. Add in a blocking dummy or coach to make post player work on going against defense. Make post player work with a V-Cut or spin move to get open on the block. Even without defense, it is a drill to work on game speed. Emphasize: 1. Post player come across the lane game speed. 2. Perimeter works on coming down the operational area and making a jump stop before making post pass. 3. Perimeter must work on being effective with passes and hit post player in a position to score.
