The down screen from 1 to 2 has multiple options: 2 could reject the screen, use and send 1 backdoor, or the way it's run here with 2 tight curling and 1 popping back out. Check out the video below. This is one of the options that the Memphis Grizzlies run out of their "Shuffle" series. The play starts with the PG making the hit-ahead pass then cuts through to the opposite side of the floor. 5 then flashes to the strong side elbow to set a shuffle screen after the pass to the corner. If the initial cut off the shuffle screen isn't available for a score, 4 sets a flare for 2 on the weak side then 3 sets a rip screen for 4 (STS action). Kansas opened up its Champions Classic game vs Duke with this set, and runs this with great pace and execution, however it is well defended by the Blue Devils. This is a great set with many scoring options off of it. The flat ball screen isolates your best player driving to score. You also get the Philly cut where you can get the ball to another driver on the move, then you have the pin screen for the shooter cutting baseline, and lastly you have the initial screener popping to shoot. This continuous 3v3 drill teaches the defense to defend the flex action using different roles with different communication responsibilities. The drill will will be repeated three times so each defensive player has an opportunity to practice each part. 3 calls the screen and provides help. 2 goes over the cross screen on the baseline and communicates when matched back up. 1 communicates the down screen and opens up to allow 3 to get through the screen. 3 informs 1 when he is through the screen and matched up.
