Basketball Play - Ball Screen Sets - Stack 52

Ball Screen Sets - Stack 52

Doug Brotherton 04/29/2017

"Stack 52" is a counter to the "Stack 25," which challenges a defense in a high pick and roll situation. Instead of rolling after the high ball screen, the 5 goes into a pin down for the 2. The point guard can look to turn the corner, or read the secondary action. This is another great option in a late clock situation. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs - "Fake Hammer Snap" (SLOB)

Spurs - "Fake Hammer Snap" (SLOB)

Doug Brotherton 04/23/2017

The Spurs trailed the Grizzlies by 3, with 22 seconds left, and had the ball on the sideline. Popovich and the Spurs are known for their "Hammer Action," which is a baseline drift play. After a zipper screen to get the ball inbounds, the Spurs designed a "Hammer Action." Behind Kawhi Leonard's drive, they set a down screen for Patty Mills. The misdirection put the Grizzlies into a defensive scramble. On the pass to Mills, Kawhi's defender left to help. Kawhi spaced to the corner, where Mills made the extra pass. This resulted in a wide open 3 for Kawhi Leonard, which tied the game. In the tough scenario of needing a 3, late in the game, the Spurs got the rare uncontested look. A great design, with tremendous execution. Despite Marc Gasol's game winning shot, handing the Spurs a loss, this was the obvious "Xs and Os Play of the Game!" See More

Basketball Play - Bulls - False Motion Double Down

Bulls - False Motion Double Down

Doug Brotherton 04/19/2017

The Chicago Bulls became the first 8-seed, in NBA history, to take a 2-0 lead in a best of 7 series. Late in the third quarter, with the Celtics on a run, the Bulls went to this set. It resulted in a wide open 3 for rookie, Paul Zipser. He knocked down the triple, and the Bulls never looked back. This false motion set, leads to a double down screen, which creates numerous options. See More

Basketball Play - Screen the Screener

Screen the Screener

Mo Dakhil 04/18/2017

The Grizzlies ran a great ATO out of a sideline out bounds play with two options that led to a Marc Gasol three. The first option is a lob for the guard coming off a back screen and the second is the screener receiving a screen to get them open for a three. See More

Basketball Play - Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Doug Brotherton 04/17/2017

Brad Stevens ran this ATO set in the first half of Game 1, against the Chicago Bulls. It resulted in back-to-back baskets for the Celtics. The first basket was a lob. On the second basket, the Celtics ran the set all the way through. The key to the set is that the Celtics used their best shooter to set the back screen, which eliminated the Bulls' ability to help. More coaches should use their best shooters as a screener, when their team is in need of an easy basket. Great design by Coach Stevens! See More
