Basketball Play - Ball Screen Learning Series

Ball Screen Learning Series

John Leonzo 04/22/2016

Because of the complex nature of the ball screen action, 1 on 0 practice is insufficient for true mastery of the skill. This drill is a learning drill because it allows the offense to have an advantage by playing against a recovering defender guarding the screener. 1 still must place their defender into the screen, and then deals with reading the next defender and making the choice to shoot, pass, or drive. Basketball Play - Ball Screen Shooting Series

Ball Screen Shooting Series

John Leonzo 06/02/2016

This is part of John Leonzo's Solo Summer Shooting Workout. I recommend making no fewer than 200 shots a day, 6 days a week. Be sure to remind your players that there is no magic in the drills, in the facility, or in the coach that is with them, the magic is in the work. Improvement has a knack for following consistent work ethic and persistence. See More

Basketball Play - Pacer Iverson Empty Side Ball Screen

Pacer Iverson Empty Side Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 06/17/2013

The Indiana Pacers loved to run #24 Paul George off the Iverson Action or Zipper screens to get him open. Here after running off #21 David West's Iverson screen, he gets a ball screen from him. The key to this action is everyone clearing out on the ball screen as the 5 ducks in to the middle of the paint. With #21 West's shooting ability and #24 George's ability to create, score, and make plays more often then not the opponents in this case the Miami Heat will switch the bigs sending the 5 man's defender out to defend the popping 4 man. This leaves the 5 man with a guard dropping down on him. #55 Roy Hibbert did an unbelievable job of getting to the lane and sealing a smaller 2 man here. See More

Basketball Play - Heat Zipper Iverson Ball Screen

Heat Zipper Iverson Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 06/27/2013

The Miami Heat run a lot of stuff to get Lebron James a catch in the middle of the floor. Here they use a zipper action to clear out Chalmers or Cole and to get the ball to James. The PG runs off an Iverson cut after giving the ball up to James to clear the side. The 2 man in this case Wade would come ball screen after setting the Iverson and then spread to the opposite side of the floor. If James still hasn't created anything the 4 man, Chris Bosh after setting his Iverson screen would come over and set a ball screen with the entire left side of the floor cleared for a 2 man game. Basketball Play - Spurs Flare, Shuffle, Ball Screen

Spurs Flare, Shuffle, Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 07/02/2013

This set ran by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals is packed with action. Utilizing the trailing post is the reverse man to swing the ball around the perimeter, they then run the strech 4 man off a flare screen while the 3 gets a shuffle screen from 5. This forces the back side to focus on their own man, the 5 man to protect the hoop on 3's shuffle. 5 then comes and ball screens the 1 man with the defense engaged else where. See More

Spurs Side Ball Screen Under

An action being used a lot by NBA teams was utilized in the NBA Finals by both the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. Here in this diagram you can see that on the #9 Tony Parker and #21 Tim Duncan pick n' roll #4 Danny Green sprints from the weakside corner underneath the hoop to the strong side of the floor. His man was sinking in to help on the rolling post and lost track of his man. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Stagger Ball Screen Under

Spurs Stagger Ball Screen Under

Kevin Bruinsma 07/07/2013

#4 Danny Green did a great job of moving around on the perimeter to give the Miami Heat fits in the NBA Finals. In this specific set he went from one corner to the other as #9 Tony Parker was dribbling off the stagger screen. His man was so worried about the rolling bigs he didn't even know where Green went. Led to a wide open 3-pointer. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs Swing Ball Screen

Spurs Swing Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 07/02/2013

I really loved this action used by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. They look for the quick curl for the 2 man, get a shuffle screen, then a stagger, then a ball screen. This play is packed with multiple actions for the defense to guard and puts a lot of pressure on the man defending the 5 man. See More

Basketball Play - Miami Ball Screen Under

Miami Ball Screen Under

Kevin Bruinsma 07/11/2013

A very simple set that the Miami Heat ran to get two baskets against the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. By putting the 4 man in the corner they brought both defending bigs out of the paint. The 5 ball screens for the 1 who attacks to the 4's side. Kicking the ball to the 4 the 5 rolls hard to the rim. Most teams defend the rim with the low man away. Here that is the 3 man's defender. The 3 man goes to the baseline and slides to the ball side part of the floor and gets a short jumper outside the paint. The Heat ran this for #3 Dwayne Wade. See More
