South Dakota women's team is my favorite team to study right now in all of basketball. They run great stuff and they know how to play the game. Their ability to change speeds in the half court is what makes all their different actions in sets they run so hard to guard. Every cut and screen creates space to attack the rim. Stephen F. Austin and coach Brad Underwood were very aware of who they were -- they had a great lead guard in Thomas Walkup. By putting the ball in his hands and making a 1-4 high set look like a clearout for him to go to his strong hand, defenses were sucked into reading the action for him. Instead of running a set to clear out on his side, Underwood ran lots of traffic through the lane, getting all four help defenders to stand in the lane at one point. When the chaos cleared, what was left was an empty weak side, a perfect opportunity for a lob at the rim. By using their best shooter as the screener, there was no opportunity for the play to be foiled. See More

Fred Hoiberg has run the pitch series for several years, both at Iowa State and now with the Chicago Bulls. Because teams will often sag off the trailer when he has the ball, it makes him the perfect candidate to throw a lob pass. The Bulls run the play to get Jimmy Butler an alley oop with all the extra attention he gets on the perimeter. See More
