Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - EOG Philly Pin

Virginia Cavaliers - EOG Philly Pin

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

This is a great set with many scoring options off of it. The flat ball screen isolates your best player driving to score. You also get the Philly cut where you can get the ball to another driver on the move, then you have the pin screen for the shooter cutting baseline, and lastly you have the initial screener popping to shoot. Simple concept but great addition to your end of game playbook. On the FMS Blog: NCAA Preseason Top 25 XsOs - Teams 1-5 See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - Euro Shake + Empty Counter

Virginia Cavaliers - Euro Shake + Empty Counter

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

I love this action that Virginia ran some in their first exhbition. Obviously they are traditionaly a blocker mover team (BEAUTIFUL to watch them by the way), but this is a twist on the classic European ball screen continuity offense. In the normal ball screen continuity, the loaded wing would backdoor cut through and the ball screen would be executed with the guard lifting out of the corner. In this wrinkle, the Cavaliers set the side ball screen on the top player and let the corner shake action play out. This is one of my favorite actions, and one of the hardest to guard. Another benefit is as the ball is reversed, the opposite guard now has an empty side of the floor to reject his ball screen - as you in the clip below. Basketball Play - 2v2 Choke

2v2 Choke

Randy Sherman 01/25/2019

2v2 Choke is a #PackLine Drill to teach team post defense. "Choking the post" by the guard and "walling up" by the post defender combine in an effort to get the ball out of the post box. By choking the guard reduces the space the post has to make a move. See video below for game application of this drll ft. the Virginia Cavaliers (NCAA). Basketball Play - 3v3 On-To-Off

3v3 On-To-Off

Randy Sherman 01/10/2019

In 3v3 On-To-Off the defense is working on moving on airtime of the pass. Players must move on and off the ball to pressure the ball and shrink gaps with urgency. When all three offensive players have touched the ball once the drill is 3v3 live. Basketball Play - Virginia "5 Shake"

Virginia "5 Shake"

Dana Beszczynski 03/21/2017

This is an Offensive staple of the Virginia Cavaliers. This offense is so well run by the Cavaliers, they read everything so well and know how to move without the ball. Tony Bennett is such a defensive guru, but this Offensive action they run is really nice to watch and the continuity keeps it moving throughout the shot clock. See More

Basketball Play - Elevator Counter Option

Elevator Counter Option

Dana Beszczynski 12/23/2015

This final timeout designed play by Tony Bennett would prove to be the game winner for the Virginia Cavaliers in their match-up with the Golden Bears of CAL. Run from the same Box Set as the previous action which yielded a 3 pt make from Brogdon (15), this time Brogdon again moves down the lane, fist in the air and quickly cuts baseline around the screen from Wilkins (21). Perrantes (32) dribbles over and makes the pass and then quickly cuts away and then when Gill (13) is set, Perrantes (32) sprints off the screen and receives a well placed and timed pass for the game winning 3 pt shot. Tony Bennett really did a great job last night in clock management, maximizing his timeouts with 3 set plays that are gems and can be filed away by any Coach for future similar situations! See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Baseline Run

Virginia Baseline Run

Wes Kosel 03/21/2015

Here is a play from the Virginia Cavaliers from last season. The play was used to get Joe Harris a shot in the corner. If Virginia can't get him a shot on the initial cut to the ball-side corner, the ball is reversed sending Harris along the baseline to the opposite corner for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Mover Blocker (LANE-LANE)

Mover Blocker (LANE-LANE)

Randy Sherman 03/05/2015

A basic summary of the Virginia Cavaliers Mover-Blocker Offense (Lane-Lane mode, their most common alignment) Rules: The three "movers" (colored in pink) cut and fill maintaining top-side-side alignment. The point and each wing should be filled by the movers. In "lane-lane" the blockers are restricted to screening along the lane line extended for the movers. They can set flare screens for a player cutting off the point, they can set pin screens for cutters exiting the lane. They can downscreen for movers. Anytime a mover pin screens along the lane lane, he then immediately buries his man and posts up Blockers cannot change sides of the the floor or screen for one another Think of it as a game of 3-on-3 among the movers and the defenders with screening help from the blockers along the lane line Movers center the basketball so the ball can see both actions. UVA Chest Set Play vs M2M

Dana Beszczynski 04/02/2014

The Virginia Cavaliers are peaking at the right time and their run in the NCAA Tournament is going too be one too watch. Head Coach Tony Bennett comes from a strong coaching pedigree. This set play is run out of Transition and has the similar set-up to their Blocker Mover Offensive pattern. There are multiple scoring options off this set and the movement, spacing and timing are impeccable. See More

Virginia Set Play

Dana Beszczynski 03/05/2017

Tony Bennett is always seen as a "master" Coach for the Cavaliers defensive abilities, but his Offensive diversity outside of their normal motion sets are really good. Here's a play the Cavaliers ran against the Tar Heels. A set with so much movement and options, this is a set that will give your opponents fits. See More
