Basketball Play - Stagger - Backdoor

Stagger - Backdoor

Kyle Gilreath 02/22/2013

Thursday night in a heated PAC-12 battle California's Mike Montgomery drew up this quick hitting back door action to attack Oregon's overplaying defense. Cal's Junior Guard Allen Crabbe has had one heck of a stretch lately of offensive games so Oregon really started denying the ball; or at least making it hard for him to catch. California came out of a timeout last night to take advantage of such over-aggressive defense. This is a great action to run because you occupy all of your help with the stagger opposite. See More

Basketball Play - BLOB - Double Screen Down

BLOB - Double Screen Down

Basketball HQ 02/22/2013

With this play your 4 has to set a good screen to occupy his defender, and as soon as cuts off his shoulder, 4 has to dive hard to the rim looking for a layup. As you’re working on this play in practice, make sure you work with your 2 on reading the defense to make the proper decision to end up with an open shot. This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. See More

Basketball Play - Brooklyn ditches ISO-Joe on a game-deciding play

Brooklyn ditches ISO-Joe on a game-deciding play

Mark Travis 02/22/2013

The majority of Joe Johnson's clutch shots for the Nets this season have come on the infamous ISO-Joe plays that made Johnson's Atlanta Hawks' teams a bit of an eye sore on offense. To Johnson's credit, he's been remarkably efficient in one-on-one situations late in games this year, and he even hit the game-winner later in this game on an isolation possession. But down three with 6.7 seconds left in the game against the Milwaukee Bucks the other night, P.J. Carlesimo went away from ISO ball and drew up a beautiful elevator screen sequence to get Johnson a wide open look at a three from the top of the key. Unphased by the moment, Johnson executed his cut perfectly and he got good screens from his teammates, allowing him to tie things up and send the game to overtime. Video of this play. See More

Basketball Play - Double Screen

Double Screen

Basketball HQ 02/21/2013

For this play make sure your 2 man is your best shooter. He has to use a misdirection cutting to the ball side block when 1 passes to 3 to set his defender up for the double stagger. Your 3 and your 2 have to have the right timing of 3 not coming off of the screens early so 3 does not have to throw a cross court pass. This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. Basketball Play - Memphis' Marc Gasol Elbow Series (Part 1)

Memphis' Marc Gasol Elbow Series (Part 1)

Mark Travis 02/13/2013

Marc Gasol is one of the truly underappreciated players in the league. He's a solid post-up player, a decent shooter, the best big man passer in the league (with his brother being a close second) and he may very well be the defensive player of the year in the NBA right now. Memphis' offense is a cramped, inconsistent and often times ineffective collaboration of players who shrink the floor in an era that thrives on spacing it. When things go well for the Grizzlies, it almost always has something to do with Marc Gasol making a play for his teammates. Gasol is deadly from the elbows, as that position on the floor gives him a perfect vantage point of the floor and allows him to distribute from a high-low perspective. Here is one way the Grizz utilize Gasol's skillset from that particular spot on the floor. See More

Basketball Play - 35 Up

35 Up

Brandon Mullis 02/11/2013

This set is one that a conference rival ran on us for a lob dunk. It happened early in the game and we did not do a good job of defending their screening action. Fortunately, we did a much better job the next time they ran this set, and we were able to force a turnover. See More

Basketball Play - Back Screen with Side Ball Screen & Double Screen

Back Screen with Side Ball Screen & Double Screen

Basketball HQ 02/08/2013

This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. For this play your point guard has to be able to shoot off of a double screen or you can run your best shooter at the point for this play like the Rockets did with Kevin Martin. Your player has to read the defense on the back screen he can use a UCLA cut or a back cut depending on how the defense is playing him. Who ever you have coming off of the ball screen has to be able to handle the ball and make the decision to see the 4 man popping and the 1 man coming off of the double screen. See More
