Basketball Play - Boston Celtics - UCLA PNR Advance Pass

Boston Celtics - UCLA PNR Advance Pass

Matt Wheeler 12/15/2016

The Boston Celtics started the second half of their game against the Houston Rockets with this play designed to expose x3 in the ball screen coverage. The ball screen for 1 after the UCLA cut forced x3 to help on the ball handler. The quick advance pass from 1 to 5 gave 3 time to slip to the basket and receive the pass from 5 for an uncontested layup. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs - "Triangle STS Hammer"

Spurs - "Triangle STS Hammer"

Doug Brotherton 05/04/2017

In Game 2 of the Spurs-Rockets series, in the 2017 NBA Playoffs, Popovich ran this ATO set. It is a terrific design, based on the fact that the Spurs love to isolate Kawhi Leonard (3). On the screen-the-screener action, it looks like an isolation, but is actually a "Hammer Action." This is a screen, to set up the baseline drift pass. It resulted in a wide open 3 for Danny Green, as the Spurs opened up a 10-point halftime lead in Game 2. Look for more isolation sets, and "Hammer Actions" from the Spurs, throughout the Playoffs. Basketball Play - SLOB Plays: Shuffle Option

SLOB Plays: Shuffle Option

Doug Brotherton 06/11/2017

This set is an example of teaching multiple options, out of one SLOB set. The Houston Rockets do this better than any team in the NBA, and it allows them to adjust to whatever adjustments are made by the defense. I have designed the weak side action in this set to remain the same, regardless of the ball side action. This is to simplify the read for the player with the ball. After the shuffle cut, there are three options, which are triggered by the 4-man. The first option is to pass to the wing, and chase into a ballscreen. The second option is a dribble hand off with the wing. The final option is to pass to the wing, and cut to the block. See More

Basketball Play - Pistol - 21 Offense Breakdown

Pistol - 21 Offense Breakdown

Dave Nedbalek 07/05/2017

The Pistol offense is one of my favorite offenses right now. With the different reads and options you can make out of the initial pass it is really hard to comfortable defending. Point of emphasis would be to really make sure your wings and point guard give themselves enough room to operate sideline side to not warrant and immediate trap (although I have found that is one of the better ways to defend the initial action, so plan accordingly, tweet me @DaveNedbalekUTT and we can discuss) Please share any wrinkles counters you see, or have run. I will include some decoy entries in a later post, as well as a video breakdown. Teams running this right now: -LA Clippers -Golden State Warriors -Houston Rockets See More
