Basketball Play - Miami Heat - Hammer Lay Up

Miami Heat - Hammer Lay Up

Tony Miller 12/18/2021

Watch the video below as Coach Tony Miller uses FastDraw, the #1 play diagramming program for basketball coaches, to break down this ATO design from the Miami Heat under head coach Erik Spoelstra. Help side defenders can’t not get caught watching the ball as the double step up ball screen occurs on the strong side, leaving 2 a chance to slip to the rim. Send to FastDraw using the button above. Basketball Play - Blind Pig Backdoor SLOB

Blind Pig Backdoor SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB to burn aggressive defense on a blind pig backdoor. This play is sexy when executed properly, but it is better mixed in with other options out of the same set up, instead of being a stand alone set play in your playbook. Video below. Basketball Play - Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB that ends in a double flare screen. I think it's an interesting action, but maybe a set to save for use at the right time instead of using it often. I think the movement pattern has great felxibility to be paired with other options that look similar in flow, but don't use the double flare. Video below. Basketball Play - Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a longer form SLOB to create a three-pointer off of hammer action. Sometimes I love this set, and other times, I wish it would just get to the point. I really do like flowing pattern of the set, and hammer action is one of my favorites. All of the action is set up up well using screens to make sure players are open when they need to be. Basketball Play - Swing STS SLOB

Swing STS SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB to get into some screen-the-screener (STS) action. I like the action overall, but I'm not sure how much is added by swinging the ball and running the inbounder all the way across the play. Video below. Basketball Play - Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

We used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Horns Set Play: "Circle"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a set play out of a horns alignment we use with multiple options. First, we use the alignment to let a playmaker attack and read the defense with the horns ball screen, roll/pop action. We want to play off the ball handler, and if we can't create a shot off the initial attack, look to play 4 around 1 with our big to get it inside. Then we look at a couple simple set options that play off of the base action. Video clip below. Basketball Play - High Ball Screen Continuity Offense: "Flow"

High Ball Screen Continuity Offense: "Flow"

Matt Hackenberg 12/10/2021

This is a breakdown of an offense we call "Flow." Flow is three guard, two forward offense that is a hybrid of a ball screen offense and dribble drive concepts. It has options to attack driving gaps and play pick and roll. I really think the roll and replace concept is hard to guard, and we often found the replacing big wide open at the top of the key. Obviously, playmaking guards are a centerpiece to this concept. Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

Here we look at a set play that evolves directly from the Euro Ball Screen Offense, designed to get a forward cutting to the basket for an interior touch. I love set plays that originate out of a team's main offense, effectively masking the action to make it harder for the defense to prepare for. Basketball Play - DHO Swing Brush Screen

DHO Swing Brush Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play to get a dynamic driver some space to operate. The play uses some false motion to open space up for a brush screen to be used to try to create an advantage to drive to the basket. I love these gap drive actions to take some pressure off the driver, and make the defense execute with the brush screen. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: Slip Spread

1-4 High: Slip Spread

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we try to steal some points with a set play designed to slip a ball screener to the rim. As simple as the action is, it works far more often than you think it might. It flows right into a spread ball screen option if the cheap points don't materialize.
