Double stack set and wing pass entry. 1 clears to opposite corner and 2 fills high. 3 dribbles hard at the right elbow as 4 walks his defender to the corner. 3 picks up the ball and forward pivots away from defender. John Pelphrey ran this Carolina backscreen action while the head coach of the University of Arkansas. What I love about this play is by have 2 set the backscreen to 4, a lack of communication will result in one of three outcomes: 1. Lob to 4 2. 2 will be open as X2 helped because X4 was nailed on the backscreen 3. X5 is forced to help on 2 and 5 can flash for an elbow jumper or iso-drive to the rim. If none of those options are available the pick & roll finishes up the play. With the floor spread and the pick so close to the baseline it will be difficult to help on the roll of 5 if X5 is caught helping X2. See More

The more I look at screening and cutting offensively, the more I realize the importance of setting up screens and cuts, and reading screens and cuts. Defensively, sound principles of fighting through screens, stunting to the ball on pindowns, maintaining vision of ball and man and foot faking and recovering in disadvantage situations can not be overemphasized. Mark Gottfried frequented this half-court offense set while the head coach at the University of Alabama. The main reason this play was so successful was because Gottfried had a 5 man in 6'9" 255 lb Richard Hendrix. Hendrix was a force inside and almost impossible to move off the block. Once you got sealed, it was an automatic two points. If X3 tried chasing this screen, 3 occasionally would be open for a lay-up. See More

This play creates an open three for a good shooting post player. The screen-the-screener action occupies 4's defender, allowing 2 to set a good screen on him to free 4. 4 must be ready to catch and shoot quickly. Secondary action is a quick 2-5 cross screen for a post feed. See More

The backscreen action for the point guard is a great way to iso their point defender in the low post. If your point guard has the quickness advantage over your opponents point guard, you should be able to get a touch in the low post off of this set. If the backscreeners defender gives help, then you have an easy pick and pop scenario for a 3pt look at the top of the key area. See More
