About This Play/Drill

This four-on-four shell drill is mainly a shifting and rotation drill. Its objective is to drive home the "Near Man Rule."

Near Man Rule: If/when the skip/diagonal pass is made over to the helpside of the defense, all players must immediately rotate to the nearest opponent on the flight of the pass.

  • 1 passes to 3 who attacks baseline

     

    X1 assumes pass denial on 1 creating box pressure

     

    On drive X2 drops to LOW I against 4

     

    X3 pushes 3 toward baseline checkpoint

     

    X4 moves with the dribble to help/trap at the baseline checkpoint

  • Close Out Rotations

    NEAR MAN RULE

    3 passes out of trap to 2, near man X1 closes out and pushes 2 toward sideline checkpoint

     

    X2 assumes pass denial position on 4

     

    X3 sprint releases on the flight of the pass to a denial position on 1

     

    X4 assumes LOW I helpside position on 3

  • If/when ball is passed to 4, players rotate on the baseline drive.

     

    X4 rotates on the dribble to the help/trap with X2

     

    X1 assumes denial position on 2

     

    X3 drops to LOW I against 3

  • Close Out Rotations

    NEAR MAN RULE

    4 skip the ball out of the trap to 3

     

    X3 closes out and assumes on ball stance pushing to baseline checkpoint.

     

    X1 exerts box pressure by assuming deny stance on 1

     

    X2 sprint releases on the flight of the pass to TOP 1 against 2

     

    X4 becomes LOW I against 4
