About This Play/Drill

In this live motion offense breakdown drill, we are isolating a screener, a cutter and a post to learn the actions on a closed post side.

Live play should include, down screens, flare screens, DHO, shallow cuts.

Diagrammed below are concepts and elements involoved in 3-on-3 on a side

  • Drill begins with a screener in the slot, a cutter on the wing and a post + an unguarded passer (coach).

Play is restricted to shaded area (opposite edge of the backboard).

Drill CAN begin with a pass to the coach/passer in the opposite slot.

Defense behaves according to their defensive principles

  • From there players follow their screening rule:

    - Screeners screen for cutters

Coach can pass to cutter or screener on the second cut.

    Play live on the side

  • 3-on-3 on a side give the offense a chance to implement one of the "automatics" of 4-out motion.

** If a cutter passes from wing to slot on the closed post side, the post steps out into a back screen for the passer. **

  • 1 can also dribble at the wing and "shallow out" 2 to the slot.

This sets up a flare screen situation upon ball reversal to coach as the cutter is now on top of the screener.

  • 1 can also dribble at the wing and DHO to 2.

2 comes out of the DHO with the ability to reverse to coach/passer.

This sets up a flare screen situation upon ball reversal to coach as the cutter is now on top of the screener.

  • Possession can also begin with a pass to 2 on the wing (may have to use a cutoff step depending on defensive principles).

On the wing catch, 2 checks for shot or drive, post feed.

    1 anchors the defense.

If the ball goes inside, 1&2 get into some sort of screener/cutter action (down or flare screen) to occupy potential dig defenders.

  • 2 may dribble at the slot. This elicits the LOOP from 1.

This sets up a flare screen situation upon ball reversal to coach as the cutter is now on top of the screener.

  • Possession can also begin with cutter (2) on top of screener (1)

Upon the reversal, 1 flare screens for 2 and 5 looks to seal his helping defender in the paint.
