About This Play/Drill

The Cross Texas 2-Step is a 3-count rhythmic ball handling maneuver where the crossing of the ball and the first of the 2 steps creates a momentary bidirectional cue diversion for the defender. That is, the ball is crossed from one side to the other while pseudo simultaneously stepping and planting in the opposite direction. In most cases it seems, the defender when confronted with 2 cues in opposite directions tends to favor (or lean toward) the latter cue. The 2nd step is now in the direction of the ball and opposite to the 1st plant step allowing the ball handler to get by the defender whose is leaning in the wrong direction.

  • SETUP: Dr. Dish set to throw pass to half court center on the bounce. Tempo of pass is typically remote controlled by the coach/trainer.

    Sequence 1: (RH Cross Texas 2-Step Pull-up J)

    - Shooter receives pass on the bounce at half court center and laterally shuffle dribbles with the right hand from point A to point B.

    - At point B shooter attacks the wing defender with only 1 long setup dribble before executing the maneuver at point C.

-At point C the ball is crossed from the right hand to the left hand while almost simultaneously stepping toward the right and then hard planting and pushing off the right foot to take the blow-by step with the left foot. Following the 2nd step (left foot) the ball is pounded to initiate the 'boom-1-2' pull-up jump shot at point D. Rhythmically, the 3-count maneuver is "cross/step/step" followed by the 'boom-1-2'.

    - The shooter repeats this maneuver 3 times: slow, quicker, and quickest. Shooter should be working on scanning the floor and "seeing everything" while progressing from point A to point D.

  • Sequence 2: (LH Cross Texas 2-Step Pull-up J)

    - Shooter receives pass on the bounce at half court center and laterally shuffle dribbles with the left hand from point A to point B.

    - At point B shooter attacks the wing defender with only 1 long setup dribble before executing the maneuver at point C.

-At point C the ball is crossed from the left hand to the right hand while almost simultaneously stepping toward the left and then hard planting and pushing off the left foot to take the blow-by step with the right foot. Following the 2nd step (right foot) the ball is pounded to initiate the 'boom-1-2' pull-up jump shot at point D.

  • Sequence 3: (RH Cross Texas 2-Step Front Cross Counter Pull-up J)

    - Shooter receives pass on the bounce at half court center and laterally shuffle dribbles with the right hand from point A to point B.

    - At point B shooter attacks the wing defender with only 1 long setup dribble before executing the maneuver at point C.

-At point C the ball is crossed from the right hand to the left hand while almost simultaneously stepping toward the right and then hard planting and pushing off the right foot toward the left to take the 2nd step with the left foot. Following the 2nd step comes the counter: the ball is crossed back toward the right and (after the right foot lands) either gathered for a quick 1-2 pull-up J or, pounded to initiate an extended 'boom-1-2' (or, if preferred, a pound-hop) pull-up jump shot at point D. Rhythmically, what was previously a 3-count maneuver of "cross/step/step" followed by the 'boom-1-2', now becomes a 4-count maneuver of "cross/step/step/cross".
