Basketball Play - Thunder Flex

Thunder Flex

Wes Kosel 04/20/2015

In this Flex Option from OKC, the ball is reversed to the left wing starting the flex action at the right post. 4 screens for 2 who cuts into the lane. 5 screens down for 4. If 4 gets the ball without a shot, he can pass to 1 and set a ball-screen or dribble towards 1 giving him the ball on a dribble hand-off. See More

Basketball Play - Chicago Bulls "PNR Elevator"

Chicago Bulls "PNR Elevator"

Gibson Pyper 04/23/2015

In the Chicago Bulls bigger lineups they have Mirotic at the 3, Gibson at the 4 & Noah at the 5, this lineup works well because Mirotic can shoot the 3 well and set ballscreens effectively. A set that the Bulls have run throughout the year is having Mirotic set a ballscreen and they turn and sprint off an elevator screen. See More

Basketball Play - 1998 Valpo Bryce Drew Game-Winning Shot

1998 Valpo Bryce Drew Game-Winning Shot

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

In the spirit of March Madness, let's take a trip back in time to 1998 when Bryce Drew hit the game winning shot over Ole Miss. The play starts with 2.5 seconds left on the clock and Valpo down by 2 points. Homer Drew draws up a brilliant last-second play throwing the ball the length of the court to his 4 man. While in the air, Bill Jenkins made the pass to Bryce Drew on the wing. Bryce Drew hit the shot sending Valpo on their Cinderella run to the Sweet 16. The Crusaders were a #13 seed defeating #4 seed Ole Miss. Valpo will open the tournament against Maryland today. Bryce is now the head coach of the Crusaders. Just for kicks, I threw in a counter option with the inbounder running the baseline. See More

Basketball Play - NC State BLOB Double Loop

NC State BLOB Double Loop

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

NC State used this BLOB play in the second half against LSU. The play is meant to get a 3-point shot by running 2 off of a double screen at the free-throw line. However, NC State makes a good read and the point guard takes his man to the basket after 3 clears to the opposite side of the floor. 1 drives to the basket and forces LSU to foul on the penetration. Basketball Play - Trail Blazer Horns Wheel

Trail Blazer Horns Wheel

Wes Kosel 04/26/2015

4 screens down for 2 who cuts up and gets the pass from 1. 2 makes the quick pass back to 1 then flares off of 5's screen at the right elbow. At the same time, 3 cuts to the left wing/corner off of a screen from 4. If 1 has trouble passing to 2 on the initial cut, he can continue dribbling towards the left wing as 4 posts up. See More

Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors "Wing Twirl Double"

Golden State Warriors "Wing Twirl Double"

Gibson Pyper 04/23/2015

One of the most lethal actions the Warriors run is having Steph & Klay twirl on the wing. Usually Steph cuts to set a down screen for Klay, looking for a quick shot, in this set they "Twirl" or Klay cuts off of the screen and curls back inside setting another quick screen for Steph. Out of this action, the first guard receives a dribble handoff and the other cuts through off a double screen, looking for a shot. Kerr also runs a counter out of this where instead of cutting off double screen Klay is involved in the double screen and "Leaks" or slips out early to get a shot. See More

Basketball Play - OK State Weave Cross Up

OK State Weave Cross Up

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

Here is another great play from Oklahoma State to get Phil Forte a shot. The play starts with multiple dribble hand-offs that gets the defense chasing the ball. Once the ball is back to the point guard, he dribbles towards the middle of the floor then hits the wing on a snapback. Forte (2) sets a cross-screen for 5 then gets a down-screen from 4. Forte cuts to the top of the key for an open shot. See More

Basketball Play - Northern Iowa Elbow Pop STS

Northern Iowa Elbow Pop STS

Randy Sherman 03/20/2015

Northern Iowa used this box set to quiet a Wyoming run. The set has two primary looks: 5 on the post up coming off the downscreen into the post and 2 with a catch and shoot opportunity coming off the STS action. 2 is a better screening target if he sets a great backscreen. If he sets a good backscreen for 5 and causes the hedge from his defender and give 4 a good screening angle. See More

Basketball Play - Wichita State Stack to Stagger

Wichita State Stack to Stagger

Wes Kosel 04/07/2015

This play starts with a pass to the left wing and a UCLA cut from the point guard to the ball-side block. If your point guard can post up, this is an easy look inside. If not, the ball can be reversed creating a situation for a cross-screen/stagger-screen action sending 3 to the basket and 1 to the top of the key for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors "Phoenix Double Away"

Golden State Warriors "Phoenix Double Away"

Gibson Pyper 06/01/2015

Same concept as the regular Phoenix ballscreen, the main difference is that two big men set the ballscreen early in transition. The best part of this set is the counter they run out of it, the first big (typically Andrew Bogut) dives to the rim and the second big (typically Draymond Green) sets a pindown screen for Klay Thompson. The Warrriors also run another option out of this and that is to have Klay be a screener with a big man setting the double screen. After the guard comes off of this, the big man turns and sets a down screen for Klay to get a shot out of it. See More

Once 3 has cleared, 1 cuts off of the cross-screen from 4 at the left block. 2 passes to 3 or 1 for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers "Zipper Cross"

Cleveland Cavaliers "Zipper Cross"

Gibson Pyper 04/23/2015

David Blatt has been adding new sets almost every single game throughout this season. To start the playoffs he added this new set "Zipper Cross" to try and get Kevin Love a post up in Game 1. Throughout Games 1 & 2 he then ran this set with different counters and options out of it, the main one being a high Pick & Roll for Kyrie Irving to attack out of. The set starts off with a Zipper cut (typically by Kyrie Irving) and then the bigs cross, looking to get Kevin Love to seal out of it. If the post is not open or if Blatt wants Kyrie to attack out of the Pick & Roll, the 5 man continues high and Love exits to the corner to space the floor. They have also ran this for Lebron to post & then counter that with him flashing to the Elbow for an isolation. See More

Basketball Play - San Antonio Spurs "Motion Weak"

San Antonio Spurs "Motion Weak"

Gibson Pyper 07/10/2015

The San Antonio Spurs have two basic options for their Motion Offense, called Motion Weak and Motion Strong. Taking a look at their Motion Weak, it starts with the point guard passing to the wing and cutting through the lane to the opposite wing. The ball is reversed through the trailing big, and the weakside guard cuts into the lane to set a cross screen for the firs big man down the floor. After the reversal, the point guard looks to enter the ball into the post, if the post is covered then the guard who screened across receives a down screen from the big at the top of the key. Basketball Play - Golden State Warriors "Zip Mix Pindown"

Golden State Warriors "Zip Mix Pindown"

Gibson Pyper 06/01/2015

Steve Kerr has been my favorite coach to watch his actions all season after time outs and the playoffs have been no different. He runs great action here for a quick hitter shot, and a nice backdoor option. The biggest part of these sets is the fake dribble hand off to Steph at the top of the key, that fake freezes the big man's defender and allows for a clean pass. See More

Basketball Play - Trail Blazer Horns Shuffle

Trail Blazer Horns Shuffle

Wes Kosel 04/25/2015

1 dribbles to the left wing and gives the ball to 2 on a dribble hand-off. 5 then pops out to the perimeter and gets the pass from 2.5 passes to 3. 4 screens out for 2 then 4 and 5 set a staggered screen for 1. 3 looks to pass to 2 posting up or to 1 for a shot. If 5 has trouble getting 3 the ball on the wing, he can a) pass to 3 cutting back-door or b) give the ball to 3 on a dribble hand-off. See More

Basketball Play - Washington Wizards "Post Rub Rip Empty"

Washington Wizards "Post Rub Rip Empty"

Gibson Pyper 04/30/2015

Another counter to a normal set that teams ran in the regular season is an empty set from the Washington Wizards. The Wizards normally run a post rub into a cross screen for the big man to get a post touch, but in the playoffs they ran a counter that had the guard who normally screens the big man, runs to the corner. The other big flashes to the elbow to empty the paint and allows the big to seal his man and have an entry for a layup. See More
