Basketball Play - Nigeria - Chin Reverse Duck In

Nigeria - Chin Reverse Duck In

Matt Wheeler 08/16/2016

Nigeria ran this option out of the Chin set on consecutive plays to open their game against Lithuania. This is a great way to start out attacking the paint and put the ball in your post player's hands. Nigeria was able to draw a foul on the first possession and get a layup on the second one to start the game. See More

Basketball Play - Nigeria - Chin Stagger (2 plays)

Nigeria - Chin Stagger (2 plays)

Matt Wheeler 08/16/2016

Nigeria has two different options for the point guard in this set. Both plays result in opportunities for a post up for a perimeter player with another guard coming off of a staggered screen for a 3 point shot. When 1 cuts to the strongside he will get the ball back and be the decision maker for the pass to the post up or staggered screen. When 1 cuts to the weakside he will be the one coming off of the staggered screen for the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Spain - Elevator Horns

Spain - Elevator Horns

Matt Wheeler 08/09/2016

Spain often runs a unique entry into their Horns sets. They start with an elevator screen for 3, which gets him the ball in the top of the key area. 1 & 2 then cut to the corners to get into the Horns formation. They have different options depending on who sets the ball screen. If 5 sets the screen, he rolls to the basket and 4 pops. If 4 sets the screen, he immediately goes off of a flare screen from 5. If nothing is available 5 follows the ball for a pick & roll. Blog Post: Offensive Actions Breakdown - Elevator Screens See More

Basketball Play - USA - Pindown Curl Post Screen

USA - Pindown Curl Post Screen

Matt Wheeler 08/09/2016

Team USA used this play to get a quick post opportunity for Demarcus Cousins to open the second half in their game against Venezuela. The down screen forces x4 to help against the curl, which opens up the pass to the wing. To run this play you want to make sure your 4 is comfortable on the perimeter and is skilled in making post entry passes. The difficulty in defending this play comes with x2 having to guard consecutive actions, fighting over the pindown screen and helping on the cross screen. If 2 sets a great screen and x5 is unable to fight through it, it will lead to an easy post up for the 5. See More

Basketball Play - Lithuania - Choice Side PNR

Lithuania - Choice Side PNR

Matt Wheeler 08/08/2016

Lithuania frequently uses this play to get into a side ball screen action. They place the player who they want in the ball screen (2) under the basket so they can come off of a screen on either side. On the pass to 2, 3 screens for the post player on the opposite side so his defender will be late in defending the ball screen. Lithuania likes to play in a spread pick & roll situation so they then lift the 4 up above the 3 point line. This way 1 can look for 5 rolling to the basket or any of the 3 shooters spaced outside the 3 point line. See More

Basketball Play - Lithuania - DHO UCLA Shuffle

Lithuania - DHO UCLA Shuffle

Matt Wheeler 08/08/2016

Lithuania ran this unique shuffle cut variation in their opening round game against Brazil. Typically shuffle cut actions put the player receiving the staggered screen in the weakside corner . This way they can easily come off of the staggered screen after the shuffle screen takes place. In this play, 3 uses the UCLA cut to look for a layup on the strong side. If 3 isn't open he moves to weakside block to open up a cutting area for 1, who is using the shuffle screen from 4. 4 & 5 then immediately set a staggered screen for 3. If 3 doesn't have a shot, Lithuania has added a ball screen option where the point guard sets a back screen for the 5 to free him up for a layup. See More

Basketball Play - Brazil - EOG SLOB 3 Box Double

Brazil - EOG SLOB 3 Box Double

Matt Wheeler 08/08/2016

Brazil was down 7 with 17.2 seconds left against Lithuania, trying to finish off a comeback that had them down by 25 in the second half. They used the familiar box setup for this SLOB play. Often times in this situation 2 will set a cross screen for 3. In this play 2's starting position was facing 3 as if he was going to screen for him. Once 1 was given the ball, 2 instead cut off of the double screen by 4 & 5. When he didn't get the ball, 2 continued to the corner. 3 then ran off of the second double screen. 3's defender was unable to get through the screen which forced a switch and eventually a foul on the 3 point shot.
