Basketball Play - Duke On-Ball Back Screen

Duke On-Ball Back Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 04/24/2015

Duke ran this play to free up Winslow going to the rim and once the ball is reversed it turns into a post iso for him. Okafor screws the play up by not moving to the weak side block, but Duke ends up getting a basket on a post move from Winslow. If Okafor would have slid over to the opposite block and ducked his man in, Winslow would have had a lob dunk after the back screen from the point guard. See More

Basketball Play - D2 Elevator

D2 Elevator

Timothy Hipps 03/03/2015

This is a play I saw in a NCAA Division II game in January. The game was Mt. Olive and King (Tennessee). My apologies as a I don't remember which team ran the play, but it's great that you can find good, innovative offense everywhere. See More

Basketball Play - Shaka Smart VCU Rams Set Play: Hook 2

Shaka Smart VCU Rams Set Play: Hook 2

Scott Peterman 02/27/2015

Shaka Smart who is the VCU Rams Head Coach is known more for his Havoc Pressure Defense, but when he switches to the offensive end of the floor then he imposes offensive Havoc on his opponents. He incorporates ball screens into transition and his half court offense. This potent offensive stratgegy is used throughout basketball and has become one of the best ways to get players open looks at the basket and tire his opponents. These ball screens will: Force your opponents to guard disadvantage situations Create roles for other players on your team Exploit your opponent's weak defenders Coach Smart will show you the most important aspects of using ball screens in this set play: spacing, timing, and screening angles. Havoc Pressure Defense is what Shaka Smart is known for. Execution is what I know Shaka Smart for. The first diagram is "Special" which is a zone quick hitter. The 2nd and 3 diagrams are the "Weave" Play zone set play. If you like this Shaka Smart Zone Offense Play then check out our website: Men's Basketball Hoop Scoop. See More

Basketball Play - Pittsburgh Stagger

Pittsburgh Stagger

Kevin Bruinsma 01/24/2015

Tied 72-72 with under 20 seconds left to play Pittsburgh ran a stagger action that free’d up #3 Cameron Wright for a wide open mid-range jumper to win the game. #3 Wright missed the shot, but Pitt went on to defeat Horizon League member Oakland in overtime. A small part to this action that I really liked was when the 1 passed the 4 man as he navigated down to the block the 4 showed his hands to the 5 man at the elbow as if he was expecting a pass for a shot. Even if he wasn’t an option in the play his attention to detail caused his man to at least play him as a threat which created a better angle for his pin down screen for the 1 man. See More

Basketball Play - Brooklyn Nets Horns Action

Brooklyn Nets Horns Action

Brandon Mullis 04/22/2014

Among the many things the Brooklyn Nets did well in their Game 1 victory over the Toronto Raptors was this great quick hitter set dialed up by Coach Jason Kidd in the waning moments of the 2nd quarter. With 1:13 on the clock in the 2nd, the Nets were able to get a wide open lay-up (Option 1) to increase their lead to 5 points. I added in the 3rd Option to create another scoring opportunity. Basketball Play - Michigan State- Elbow Ball Screen

Michigan State- Elbow Ball Screen

Jake Presutti 04/03/2014

Michigan State ran this Elbow Ball Screen set in their win against Harvard in the NCAA Tournament. The first option of the set is guard Gary Harris coming off down screen. The next option is Denzel Valentine who comes off a backscreen, looking for a pass at the basket. The final option is a ball screen where the 4 (Branden Dawson) sets a high ball screen for Gary Harris. Dawson rolls automatically to the basket but its up to Harris to drag the screen until Dawson is open at the basket. See More

Basketball Play - Virginia - Backdoor Cut (Quick Hitter)

Virginia - Backdoor Cut (Quick Hitter)

Jake Presutti 03/23/2014

Viriginia ran this quick hitter in the ACC Championship game against Duke on Sunday. Virginia runs this set looking to get one of their guards a backdoor cut at the basket. UVA does a great job in their motion offense staying patient and looking for great shot on each possession. Their patience and hard cuts will leave the defense suseptible to backdoor cuts. See More

Basketball Play - Wing Loop Elevator

Wing Loop Elevator

Adam Spinella 01/06/2014

This elevator play is designed for a shooter to come off a misdirection cut back up the lane line to where he came from thru an elevator. What makes it so seductive for the shooter is that the elevator wasn't there when he made his original cut, so when he retraces his steps and comes thru the elevator, the defender will be blindsided by it. Basketball Play - Utah Jazz 1-4 High Double Back Screen

Utah Jazz 1-4 High Double Back Screen

Al Baker 09/16/2013

This is our entry into the little-big back screen that the Utah Jazz used with John Stockton and Karl Malone back in the day. You may be able to get the ball to the 2 on the first basket cut, but more often than not the x5 defender will be sagging on the back screen, leaving 5 open to catch on the wing. If your 5 isn't a shooter, you may want to change up personnel to avoid allowing that defender to play off the ball and take away the entry to 4. See More

Basketball Play - Transition Weak Pindown

Transition Weak Pindown

Daniel Murphy 08/05/2013

Transition play to get a quick shot off a curl from a pindown with a handoff or dribble hand off counter. If 1 throws the ball ahead to 2 and 2 can't feed 5 in the post, a trailing 4 can set a weakside pindown. If 3 is not open on the curl, then 4 steps back to the ball and plays a two man game with 1. Basketball Play - Pacer Weave Duck In

Pacer Weave Duck In

Kevin Bruinsma 06/19/2013

The Pacers ran this set in a late clock situation right before the end of the First Half in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals vs the Miami Heat. #21 David West with a textbook example of ducking in, sealing a defender. This play didn't result in a basket as West missed an open lay-up. But the job he does of going along the baseline, then coming back towards the rim sealing they switching defender was tremendous.
