About This Play/Drill

As you have probably noticed in the past few months, we are extremely proud of our NBA and NCAA clients.  So proud, in fact, that we take every opportunity to brag about their successes on our website.

MarylandFamily.jpgLast week's "Play of the Day" from Mike Bowden and the University of Maryland Women's Basketball coaching staff was such a huge success, that we have asked them to open their FastDraw playbook to us on a weekly basis, and they have agreed to do so.

Maryland Head Coach, Brenda Frese, works hard to foster an environment that is centered around "Family".  It is one of the pillars that they have built their program around.

Everyone involved in the program benefits greatly from that family atmosphere, and it shows in their interactions both on and off the court.  The video to the right showcases the kind of bonding that is built at team events.

Coach Frese and her staff believe that this tight bond enhances the team's ability to handle adversity and translates to success on the court, which is evidenced by Maryland's 221-81 (.732) record during Coach Frese's 10 years at Maryland.

Today's FastDraw Play of the Day uses great spacing and multiple screens to free up scorers in the middle of the floor to either catch and score, or set up a teammate for a shot.

  • 1 enters the ball to the 5 and continues to the 2 on the opposite side of the floor. While the ball is being reversed, the 3 player sets a flex screen for the 4 to come across the lane and post up.

  • If the 4 is not open, players 1 and 5 set a stagger screen for the 3 player to get a shot around the elbow.

  • The third option if the 3 player does not have a shot, the 2 player cuts off of the 3 player for either and hand off or a dribble hand off /Pick and roll to attack the basket. The 1,5,4 space out to get room for the Pick and Roll action.

  • 2 reads the defense for a shot, drive, or pass to a teammate.

Thanks again to Coach Bowden and the Maryland staff for sharing a piece of their playbook with the Fast Model Family.  We are always proud to showcase our Fast Model clients and their ideas.

We also love hearing from our "Play of the Day" fans via e-mail and on Twitter. If you see a play or drill that you really like, let us know and we will do our best to include you whenever possible.
