About This Play/Drill

This drill is designed to teach primary break by getting players to fill lanes and get the ball up the floor quickly by passing it.  If you need to make sure that your players run wide, you can place cones seven feet from the sideline at half court.

  • Basketball Play - Four-Man Break

Frame 1

#1 - Break to either the left or to the right and look to receive the outlet pass from #4. You will immediately pass to either wing so that they can score. Catch the ball with your back to the sideline.

#'s 2 and 3 - As soon as #4 throws the ball off of the backboard, run down the floor and anticipate receiving the ball from #1.

#4 - Throw the ball off of the backboard, rebound the ball, and make the outlet pass to #1.

Coaching Tip: Catch the ball with your feet in the air and come to a jump stop. Travels and dribbles are not permitted.

Frame 2

If the wing cannot score off of the pass from #1, he will pass the ball back to #1. #1 will then pass to the opposite wing who will look to score.

#4 must run all the way down the floor and take the ball out of the net.

Frame 3

Drill continues with #1 making himself available for the inbounds pass from #4. #2 and #3 will cross between the backboard and the baseline so that #4 can run all the way through and rebound the ball from the basket.

Frame 4

The drill goes up and back twice. On the second time back, we will look to hit the trailer so that he can score the lay-up.
