Basketball Play - Wofford Zipper Post #2

Wofford Zipper Post #2

Wes Kosel 07/26/2015

Just as in play #1, 1 passes to 2 then sets a down-screen for 5. 5 makes a zipper cut up the lane line and gets the pass from 2. Instead of 1 looping around for the hand-off, 3 makes the cut around 5 and gets the ball. 2 sets a wide pin-down screen for 4 in the corner. See More

1 gives the ball to 3 on a dribble hand-off. 4 moves over to the right lane line. As 3 dribbles towards the top of the key, 4 screens away for 2 and 5 moves across the lane. If 2 isn't open, 5 sprints up to set a ball-screen for 3. 3 dribbles right as 5 rolls and 2 screens down for 4 who cuts out for a shot. See More

Grinnell Stagger Triple

Wes Kosel 05/06/2015

1 dribbles up the floor as 2 runs across the baseline off of a staggered-screen from 3 and 5. If 2 isn't open on the wing, 4 can also join the screen to open up 2 for a shot. If 2 gets the ball without a shot opportunity, he looks to pass to 3 cutting to the right wing off of a staggered-screen from 4 and 1. See More

At the same time, 2 screens for 4 in the corner. 4 cuts up for a shot and 2 makes a cut to the basket after setting the screen. See More

Basketball Play - 2 on 2 Triangle Fast Break

2 on 2 Triangle Fast Break

Kyle Gilreath 05/29/2014

Following drill was a part of a skill packet we mailed out to coaches when I was at the University of Florida. Yesterday I posted phase 1 of the build up with the 2-on-1. A 2nd defender is added whose main job is to spring back down the floor and get back into the play. Start with the same set-up as you did in the 2-on-1 drill, but place the 2nd defender under the rim. The 2nd defender’s goal is to get to the inside track of the player opposite of the ball. Just like in the 2-on-1 drill, the offensive players are trying to attack the rim to score, remaining 2-3 feet outside of the lane. See More

Basketball Play - 3-low vs. Box 1 or Diamond 1 (Guarded Player Baseline Runner)

3-low vs. Box 1 or Diamond 1 (Guarded Player Baseline Runner)

Rory Hamilton 07/29/2015

In this version of "3-low", we are using our two post players along the baseline as screeners and sealers and our top two guards as gappers. The two top guards are to play in gaps and be ready to penetrate and pitch against the one guard front. They are also trying to read the defense as our guarded player comes off of baseline screening actions. This play has the same action upon a baseline catch in that the strong side post player immediately screens away for the weak side post player. If a star player catches in the corner, the ball side post can also set a ball screen for the guarded player. This puts the defense in a vulnerable position and forces help from the zone players. As you can see in the diagram, the player has multiple reads off the ball screen (shot, roll man, reverse). My favorite part of this action is that you are engaging multiple defenders thus creating action and indecision by the defense. See More

Wes Kosel 07/29/2015

1 passes to 4 who passes to 2 on the right wing. At the same time, 3 moves to the short corner and 5 moves down to the block. Once 2 has the ball, 4 follows his pass to set a ball-screen and 1 moves opposite. 2 comes off the ball-screen looking to score or can pass to 1. 3 sets a cross-screen for 5 in the lane. If 5 isn't open, the ball is reversed and 2 looks to pass to 3 cutting off of a down-screen from 4. See More

Basketball Play - 2 on 1 Triangle Fast Break

2 on 1 Triangle Fast Break

Kyle Gilreath 05/29/2014

Following drill was a part of a skill packet we mailed out to coaches when I was at the University of Florida. Two offensive players start 2-3 feet outside of the lane along the baseline. Start the defensive player at the free-throw line. Drill starts with a coach holding a ball around the free-throw line area, and passing it to one of the offensive players. Once the ball is passed, the defensive player should immediately turn and sprint to half-court and get down in a defensive stance with active hands. The offensive players should remain 2-3 feet outside of the lane as they attack the other end. They should not be too wide, so the defense can recover, and not be too close, so the defense is able to cover both players. The offensive player with the ball should not pass the ball until the defense totally commits to him (bounce pass for lay-up). If the defense does not commit, shoot a lay-up. See More

If 5 isn't open, he steps out to the corner as 4 sets a ball-screen for 1. See More

Basketball Play - BYU 1-3-1 Quick Hitter

BYU 1-3-1 Quick Hitter

Craig LeVasseur 03/18/2015

Here is a quick hitter that BYU used in their NCAA First Round matchup with Ole Miss to get an easy midrange jumper for Haws, one of their best shooters. Against a 2-guard front, the Ole Miss 1-3-1 zone mimics a 2-3 zone. Here the 4 man passes and cuts hard to the block off of the screen from the 5 man. This forces x5 to pick up the cut to the post. The 5 man turns and sets a quick downscreen for the 1, who flashes to the free throw line. This quick action creates confusion between x4 and x2 and results in an easy look for a great shooter.
