Basketball Play - Mavericks 1-4 Pick

Mavericks 1-4 Pick

Wes Kosel 04/22/2015

The Mavericks set up in a 1-4 high set and initiate the play with 3 cutting over the top and 2 underneath 5 and 4 at the elbows. 1 passes to 3 on the wing. 5 screens across for 4 who sprints straight into a ball-screen for 3. 3 looks to drive middle, pass to 4 on the roll, or kick out to 1 for a shot. If 1 gets the ball, 5 can set a ball-screen for 1 to drive baseline. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Grizzlies Fist 2 vs. Ice

Memphis Grizzlies Fist 2 vs. Ice

Craig LeVasseur 05/06/2015

Memphis ran this action in Game 2 against Golden State. The "Fist 2" set is a staple of the Chicago Bulls offense using Derrick Rose, and the Grizzlies used it well here against the Warriors, who "Ice" against the Side P/R. The 5 man screens against the Ice, and the 2 man drives hard to occupy x5 on the help. This set works best with a 5 man who can short roll or pop into the pocket created by the Ice, and having a great duck-in 4 man like Zach Randolph to occupy the weakside help works even better! Basketball Play - Shocker Stagger

Shocker Stagger

Wes Kosel 04/07/2015

Here is a multiple stagger set play from Wichita State. The play starts with an entry pass to the wing and a back-screen for the point guard. As the point cuts into the lane, 4 moves to the ball-side block looking for the post up. The first staggered screen is then set getting the shooting guard the ball at the top of the key. If no shot is available, 5 and 2 play a pick-and-roll as 3 cuts off of a baseline staggered screen to the corner. See More

Basketball Play - Texas ATO Swing

Texas ATO Swing

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Texas used this play after a time-out in the first half. I'm always a fan of having multiple scoring options in a play, and Rick Barnes does a great job giving his team several looks at good shots in this one. The play starts with a ball reversal (1 swinging the ball to to 4 to 3). The play gets open looks off of a down screen, back-screen, and ball-screen. Texas should come back to this play and look for the lob on the back-screen with their long wings. See More

Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers "Thumbs Down 25"

Cleveland Cavaliers "Thumbs Down 25"

Gibson Pyper 05/07/2015

David Blatt has been adding new sets almost every game this year with wrinkles off of them. A set that he has run all year with Kevin Love spacing was "Thumbs Down." This set had the bigs cross low and Love would space to the corner, while other big set a high ballscreen for the ballhandler. This series against the Bulls they have ran similar action, only with the shooting guard setting a downscreen for the 5 man and pops to the wing, the big man sets a high ballscreen, in this case, for Kyrie Irving to attack. Basketball Play - Clear

Clear

Brandon Mullis 05/02/2015

Here is a quick hitting BLOB set that one of our opponents ran against us two seasons ago. If the shooter does not have the open shot in the opposite corner coming off the double screens, he can then look inside for a post entry. See More

Basketball Play - 13 Angle

13 Angle

Adam Spinella 02/25/2015

Increasingly at the collegiate and even high school levels, teams are running ball screen sets. As the postseason nears and high level teams remain, offenses must be prepared for all different styles of defensive play. Some nuanced defensive teams will throw a counter to good ball screen offenses – known as icing. Icing a ball screen occurs on side ball screens, where the man guarding the ball squares his shoulders to the sideline and does not let the ball go middle. The man guarding the screener does not hedge the screen, instead being ready to contain the ball as it gets driven towards the baseline. He contains, the original defender recovers and the man guarding the screener is in position to take away any rolls to the rim. The most obvious counter to icing a ball screen is hitting the pick-and-pop game, since coverage on the screener is non-existent at the moment the ball gets driven baseline. After that, teams adjust to set alley screens which lead the ball handler to the baseline. However, coaches of ball screen-heavy offenses may consider putting in a counter during the postseason. One set I like is 13 Angle, which looks to set up a side ball screen by starting with an angled guard-to-guard screen, which defenses usually do not ice. See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Baseline Run

Virginia Baseline Run

Wes Kosel 03/21/2015

Here is a play from the Virginia Cavaliers from last season. The play was used to get Joe Harris a shot in the corner. If Virginia can't get him a shot on the initial cut to the ball-side corner, the ball is reversed sending Harris along the baseline to the opposite corner for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Clipper Horns Point Middle

Clipper Horns Point Middle

Wes Kosel 04/20/2015

In this option, the Clippers get the defense moving in opposite directions to get an open shot in the short corner. The point guard passes to 5 at the high post and cuts straight to the rim. As 5 dribbles to the left, 4 cuts to the right off of a staggered cross-screen from 1 and 2. 5 gives the ball to 3 on a dribble hand-off, and 3 looks to pass to 4 for a shot. If the crossing option isn't open, 3 turns to pass to 2 cutting up off of a down-screen. See More

Basketball Play - New Mexico State Box Pinch Post

New Mexico State Box Pinch Post

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

New Mexico State is staying in the game by being patient on offense and waiting for open shots. In this box set play, the guards start at the elbows with 2 screening down for 4. 5 and 3 then screen the screener with a double screen on the opposite block. Now the point guard has the option to hit 2 for a shot on the wing or pass to 4 at the pinch post. In the game, 4 got the ball and looked to drive to the basket after 1 cut through the lane. 2 High

Andrew Lacey 03/06/2015

This year we have the advantage in our Conference 3 Tournament to face some Post players that could not move very well on the perimeter. We took advantage of of our athletic Post/Stretch 4 players and put them in tough situations to constantly have to defend ball screens and play on the perimeter. Here is a nice little set that always you to also get mismatches in the scoring zones. See More

Basketball Play - Mavericks Spread Pick

Mavericks Spread Pick

Wes Kosel 04/22/2015

Here are 3 options from the Dallas Mavericks to get Dirk Nowitzki a shot on a pick & pop. In option 1, the ball is reversed through Nowitzki to 3 on the right side of the floor. Nowitzki sets a ball-screen for 3 and pops for a shot. In option 2, 5 sets a ball-screen for 1 to drive baseline. 5 rolls and Nowitzki replaces 5. In option 3, Nowitzki flips the ball-screen for 3 so that he can drive baseline. Nowitzki pops towards the elbow for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - San Antonio Spurs "Motion Strong"

San Antonio Spurs "Motion Strong"

Gibson Pyper 07/10/2015

Instead of point guard passing to the wing, he passes to trailing big who reverses to opposite wing, on this reversal the first big man in the post follows the ball. After, both the point guard and big set a double stagger screen for the guard on opposite wing, coming to look for a shot. If no shot is there, then it flows into Horns and they have multiple options out of this, they can go into a double screen, a pindown into a dribble hand off and multiple flex options off of it. With this typically you will see the point guard coming up the floor holding up his bicep and flexing, hence the "Strong." See More

Basketball Play - ULL Post Option

ULL Post Option

Wes Kosel 04/19/2015

In this post play option from the Ragin Cajuns, the point guard dribbles up the left side of the floor towards the wing. As 1 is dribbling towards the wing, 3 clears from the ball-side corner to the opposite side of the floor. 3 cuts around 5 trying to get 5's defender to worry about the cut. As 3 clears to the opposite side, 5 steps around for a post-up option from 1. If the post-up isn't there, 5 steps out to set a ball-screen. 4 moves to the ball-side corner, 1 drives, and 5 rolls to the basket. See More
